  1. This is a confusing argument. Are you suggesting that 95% of data are meaningless noise and the only data that should be considered significant are those in top and bottom 2.5%? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  2. If a controversy-based "meal ticket" was the motivation for climate scientists, somewhere around half of them would be coming at it from the other side, just to stoke the flames. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  3. I noticed you forgot to post this news article Tesla Outselling Mercedes, BMW, & Audi. I'm sure it was an honest oversite. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  4. If I'd have waited for that - I'd STILL be waiting! What was the currency when you started, sticks? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  5. Intelligence cannot be taught. Knowledge can only be taught. Wisdom requires both. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  6. A higher education does not mean that someone has wisdom. Wisdom is what is needed to deal with social issues, not a PhD in physics. Then what you want is a wise person with a PhD in sociology. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  7. which is it? - there's not a lot of overlap with today's definitions No? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  8. I'm not sure why they'd carry more insurance. Less insurance would likely be justified due to repressed property value as a result of locating next to a dangerous facility. Premiums, on the other hand...yeah, the insurance company should probably ask for more of those. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  9. There's no company in the world that carries enough insurance to cover the total cost of an extreme disaster in any field - at least in my experience. (massive engineering, construction & infrastructure projects) Do you really think that design and construction firms carry $1bn worth of insurance in case a hospital they designed falls over? Of course not - the fees required by the insurance agencies for that type of situation would make the system unusable. You carry insurance for likely costs of a mistake... if the explosion is the result of an exceptional mistake, then the insurance liability was never designed to cover that. I'm not saying that they shouldn't have had more. I'm not saying that they shouldn't have been more closely regulated, but implying that they should have carried enough insurance to cover the $100m is overly simplistic. C'mon now, $1M is less coverage than I have for flying model airplanes out in the middle of nowhere. If I remember correctly, my homeowner's policy includes $1M in liability coverage. 10. It's been at the center of a few smaller controversies, e.g. David Howard's. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  11. This. I'm fine with buying a 5 year old their own .22. I'm not fine with storing it loaded, nor should the child have unsupervised access to it. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  12. Limiting the sampling to members of PoliceOne.com is no more representative of the LEO community than sampling NRA members is representative of gun owners as a whole. I imagine its safe to say that all, or at least the vast majority of NRA members are gun owners, but that doesn't mean they're representative of all gun owners...only the activist ones. I'm a gun owner, and believe quite firmly in protecting 2nd amendment rights, but I'm not an NRA member, and I disagree with a lot of their stances. Compounding the fact that PoliceOne.com membership is a subset of the LEO community is the fact that they got a response rate of less than 4%. This means that less than 1 in 20 members of a subset of the population cared enough to answer the questions. It's perfectly reasonable to conclude that the other 96% of PoliceOne.com members and 100% of the non-PoliceOne LEO community may have a different opinion than expressed by this subset of a subset. In other words, regardless of what the survey results reflect, the opinion is meaningless with regard to the supersets in which the respondents reside. 13. I am not entirely in control of whether the climate changes or stays the same, or whether any particular company wants me to work for them. All I can do is try to ensure any influence I have on the outcome is positive, and be prepared in the event it doesn't go the way I'd like. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" 14. Not many: World gets warmer and we're somewhat prepared for it. World gets warmer and we absorb the impacts. World stays the same, but we pollute less and slow our roll on finite resources. World stays the same and we keep consuming/polluting at our current rate. World gets cooler, while we prepared for it to get warmer. World gets cooler, while we absorb the impacts. I'm not suggesting the world economy switch to hemp as its major form of currency. There are much more feasible and robust options available to us. There are also people in this forum who think cars that burn less fuel are a bad thing, and anyone in favor of conserving finite resources is a socialist. 15. This. Prostitution is an unfortunate profession, and dugs are bad for people, but every drug user and prostitute in jail is occupying space that could be better utilized by violent criminals, or convicted felons later found illegally possessing guns. If we want to reduce the amount of gun violence in the US, we should focus on those most likely to use them to commit violent acts, i.e. people who have both guns and a total disregard for the law. 16. The earth could get warmer, stay the same, or get cooler. Based on all observations since we developed reasonably accurate methods of measurement, which seems most likely? We could keep doing the exact same things we've been doing, cross our fingers, and hope that our impacts are either positive or insignficant. Alternately, we could take reasonable steps to try to prepare for whatever changes we determine to be most likely. Doing nothing, or doing something, that's really the choice we have to make. Every person's individual tolerance for change will affect how they view the choice. For me, it seems wise to review existing data and theories, acknowledging that none of them are perfect but some of them are likely to be more accurate than others, change the things I can, and prepare for whatever likely changes are outside of my sphere of influence. For example, my client intends to stop contracting with my employer at the end of September. The client has informed me that they intend to offer me my current job. My employer has expressed an interest in retaining me and finding me another position elsewhere. My wife and my lifestyle depend on me working. I can keep doing what I'm doing and hope things work out, or I can try to keep as many options open as possible, in case things go off the rails. I also have the option of delaying action until October first, when I can be certain of what my options are, but if unfavorable, I'll be an awful long ways behind the curve. So what am I doing? I'm keeping in contact with my employer to see what options they have available. I'm continuing to do my job and maintaining a good relationship with my client. I'm continuing to study at night in pursuit of a master's degree that should open up more options. And I'm regularly watching job postings and sending resumes to those that look particularly interesting. Change is certain. My actions are intended to promote the most favorable outcome. I suppose you could call it "hedging my bets". Sitting on the sidelines to watch what happens just isn't in my nature. YMMV. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  17. If the two were actively shooting at police when a civilian shot them, I doubt he'd be charged. Defense of others is generally treated as comparable to self defense. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  18. You underestimate the low regard in which I hold police who use their position to bully non-threatening people. I've taken a cop to the ground before for manhandling me with no good reason, and was allowed to walk away afterwards because he and the other two officers present knew he'd been way out of line. My demeanor is often a mirror. Courtesy, respect, and other sentiments are generally returned in kind. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  19. A warrant requires probable cause, which these guys didn't have. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  20. Why do you think this is the case? Do they search dozens of random houses for other murderers? Did this door-to-door search do any good? There are plenty of constitutional options. This is not one of them. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  21. I don't like guns pointed at me. I don't like people yelling at me. I don't like people treating me like a criminal. I don't happily give complete strangers unconstrained and unaccompanied access to my house. Which of these makes me an asshole? If one cop who seemed emotionally stable knocked on my door and said "Could you please search your house for any strangers? Or allow us to?", I'd be a bit more cooperative than 12 guys with guns pounding on my door and trying to show off their erections. In this case, I'd have said no. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  22. This. I'm strongly opposed to additional constraints on legal gun owners, but I refuse to get on board with the NRA because of how crazy they come across. A reasonable debate involves honesty and civility from both sides...qualities neither side of the gun debate seem particularly interested in. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  23. That dumb stunt just cost the city of LA $4.2M: http://news.yahoo.com/los-angeles-settles-women-fired-manhunt-201857475.html There should still be criminal charges, just like you or I would see. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  24. This. It's a perfectly legal response that doesn't involve a bunch of boot-licking. I'll search my private property and the police can search public property (and any private property in which they're invited or have probable cause). Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
  25. The same way you do any other murderer. Have a warrant or consent. Picking any house that *may* contain a criminal isn't good enough. In this particular instance, all of the unconstitutional searches proved fruitless. What worked? An entirely legal search by a property owner who then consented to police entry. There's value in recognizing that distinction. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
