  1. Many lines tend to be drawn regarding the age of 'adulthood' but IMHO the really important one is the age at which parents can legally refuse to continue to support their kids and kick them out of the home. At that point the young adults have, for all intents and purposes, the responsibilities of adulthood. Being able to drink, at that point, IMHO is a right because it may affect their ability to support themselves--something the law requires them to do--for example in a job serving alcohol. IMHO this should apply to ALL jobs, even the US presidency. No job should have an age restriction higher than the age at which someone is legally responsible for supporting themselves. 2. I'm not an instructor and therefore cannot comment on this from an instructor perspective--but from the perspective of my own AFF student jumps, I think Ron is quite right. On my two-instructor jumps, usually one AFFI had a firm grasp of my harness before I got anywhere near the door. On one such jump, once outside the door, I thought I had 'checked' with both instructors in the exit count. However it was clearly not to the satisfaction of at least one AFFI, and I was definitely physically prevented from exiting the aircraft until both instructors were fully ready. So it isn't clear to me how one could exit without the permission of the AFFI's. 3. That's been my experience as well. I believe that when they are serious about you as a candidate, they push you very hard in the interview because they want to get a sense of your limits--since they expect to be working with you. If they just have a nice friendly chat then it means they aren't so serious about finding out about your actual capabilities. Congrats on the job BTW! 4. Who is the lucky lady whose big butt is going to be praised by Sensenbrenner this Presidents' Day week? Inquiring minds want to know! There are many places to deploy a Congresscritter! 6. I would think that if someone lives in Dubai it is because of the direct intervention of the Hand of God--the three perons of the trinity--and that should be respected! 8. If he lives up to his namesake, he'll kick the old fuckers out and become the Shah of the condo board for about 30 years and think himself pretty impressive. And then, surprise, surprise, one of the old fuckers will come back and get his revenge, declare himself the Ayatollah of the condo board, and kick the Shah's sorry ass out. Soon thereafter the Shah will die in a nursing home in Florida. 9. If you want an investment that is strictly business, not personal, then play the stock market. If you see your home as an investment, you need to understand that when it comes to people's homes, it is always personal. And sometimes people's personal stuff trumps business concerns. Deal with it. "It's hard to have fun at 4-way unless your whole team gets down to the ground safely to do it again!"--Northern California Skydiving League re USPA Safety Day, March 8, 2014
  10. Yes, in society at large the homosexual should be expected to tolerate the bible thumper and the bible thumper should be expected to tolerate the homosexual. Tolerance, however, only requires minimal civility, and nothing more should be mandatory. Both the bible thumper and the homosexual are free to belong to organizations that forbid the other's membership. (Note that for convenience I'm using your terms although I might use different terms on both sides such as "devout Christian" or "gay/lesbian".) 11. The real issue here, as I see it, is that separation of church and state--something that IS mentioned in the Constitution--hasn't been practiced here. Marriage is fundamentally a religious institution--it isn't mentioned in the Constitution. Freedom of religion should mean that each religion is free to decide whether they do or do not condone gay marriage. And each individual is free to join a religion that either does or does not permit gay marriage--or not to join a religion at all, for that matter. A lot of the problem here is that the government has gotten into the business of something that is the province of religion. Government--federal or state--simply shouldn't be in the business of saying who can and who cannot get married. That is the role of religion and the only permissible role for government should be to ensure that one religion (or individual) does not trample on the rights of another religion (or individual). 12. Interesting. Curious about one thing, though--why does the article (and this thread) call them British whereas the attached document refers to them as Irish? 13. If you're talking about the red pill versus the blue pill, the reality is that you don't have to choose either. You will notice that when Neo is forced to meet with the Agents, he refuses to accept either option they offer, but instead offers his own alternative. Later, however, when he meets with Morpheus, he accepts Morpheus` view of his options without question. Accordingly, Neo ends up under the absolute control of Morpheus. The best choice is not to take EITHER pill. 14. It's reasonable to expect all co-workers, even the engineers, to do the basics like showering, wearing clean clothes, maybe even investing in a little deodorant. But it seems to me that "Asperger's syndrome" is basically just a tendency to focus obsessively on one or two narrow interests. If that narrow interest happens to be the job that the engineer was hired to do--don't expect senior management to support you in trying to change things anytime soon. 16. You manage engineers, right? And used to be one yourself? Look at it as job security. If engineers were easy people to deal with, then you could probably manage them remotely with a one-hour-a-week Skype call and YOUR job could be easily outsourced and done for 1/4 the pay. As long as you are being paid to deal with engineers face-to-face--and put up with their idiosyncrasies such as B.O. face-to-face--you have some confidence that your own job can't easily be outsourced. Face-to-face interaction can't easily be outsourced but it also involves certain kinds of pain--of which occasional B.O. is but one example--that remote work doesn't involve. 17. If you are going through a recruiter/headhunter, and the recruiter feels there is a real chance of placing you, sometimes the relationship (with the recruiter) is indeed one where they have no choice but to deal with squeaky wheels. The recruiter only gets paid by the employer if they place you in the position. To accomplish that the recruiter has no choice but to deal with both the employer and the candidate--so being a squeaky wheel definitely can help. If you are applying directly to the employer (no 'middleman' recruiter), or if the recruiter knows the employer isn't interested--being a squeaky wheel is a lot less useful. 18. I think it is quite premature for you to say that company A is the company you want to work for before you talk to the hiring manager. The job of the HR person in the initial phone screen is often partly to sell you on the company--so that you think well of them in case they do end up making an offer. But the hiring manager is the person you'll be dealing with day in and day out so they are the person you really need to know you can work with. If you haven't talked to them, you don't know much about the job yet. Sometimes a company will be doing a little bit of exciting cutting edge stuff that they prefer to focus on when talking to outsiders. But 90% of the actual work is more boring grunt work. You need to find out what the actual job involves on a day to day basis. 20. Bush pushed for the war because Saddam Hussein attempted to assassinate his father--that would be Bush 41 to America and D-20000 to us. Certainly a serious mistake but an understandable mistake from the perspective of anyone who loves their parents. 21. By definition when you work on risky things, sometimes it doesn't work out. That's what it means to take a risk. It sounds like engineering has worked out better for you than for shah. It doesn't necessarily follow that shah is "doing it all wrong". 23. A business has the luxury of firing its weaker members (the elderly/sick/disabled/etc) the moment they get to be more trouble than they're worth. A country--much like a church/synagogue/mosque--doesn't have that "privilege". Running a country is definitely a tougher job than running a business. 24. But of course this phrase can be interpreted in more than one way. It can mean everyone works during the week solely for the time off they expect to get on the weekend. Or it could mean that they are going to be spending the weekend working! 25. I understand that in a lot of states, the "permanent legal aliens" who are eligible for aid include not only lawful permanent residents (green card holders), but also those who are PRUCOL. PRUCOL==Permanently Residing Under Color of Law; it refers to people who do NOT have green cards but whose permanent presence in the USA is known to the feds. These could includes those who have applied for green cards, those whose removal (deportation) cases are still pending, those ordered removed but whose physical removal is not a priority. It is certainly true that one cannot just sneak across the border and apply for welfare the next day. But there are definitely many strategies by which unlawful immigrants can (and do) get a foot in the door despite having had no legal basis to enter the country in the first place.
