  1. Unfortunately, his induction center stuff was right on target. It's funny now, but it wasn't at the time! Blue skies, Jim

  4. On each jump regardless of size I try to practice big way tracking. On my protrac I try to keep the speed between 95-83 and watch my ground markers for horizontal distance. Basically get big, break from the formation, pick a radial landmark and track to it for all it's worth. Blue skies, Jim
  5. I couldn't figure out why they would have me and Fortson docking behind you either. Maybe it was to challenge us!?! Blue skies, Jim
  6. Ok all, let's start a controversy! Last time I looked, New England was not a state. If the DZ is in Mass, it is a Mass state record. Blue skies, Jim
  7. This is interesting to me because last week on the flight back to Houston, a really, really big guy sat across the aisle from me. This particular jet has one row of seats on the port side and two rows of seats starboard. When the big guy went to sit down, he raised not only the middle armrest, but the aisle armrest as well. The poor guy in the window seat was really crammed against the window. When the flight attendent brought the food service cart down the aisle, she had to ask the guy to move toward the window and out of the aisle. This guy was so big his knees were solidly in the back of the seat in front of him. He literally filled up the entire space between the rows of seats and could have easily taken up two full seats. This guy was overweight, but I would not have called him obese. He was just huge! Blue skies, Jim

  11. This has been a very helpful thread. I am going to add "What's the worst thing that can happen to you under the smaller canopy?" to my questions. Blue skies, Jim
  12. Usually the conversation from Jumper 2 also includes something like "I'm a quick learner", or "I'm better than the average jumper", or "You old guys are to conservative." Blue skies, Jim
  13. 1. At 17 had a woman turn across my lane. When I came to I was wedged under the right rear tire, the bike was lying on top of me, and I could hear bacon frying. 2. At 20 I slapped a bee away from my ear as a sargent pulled me to the ground. Boy could he cuss! 3. At 21 I woke up in an Air Force hospital and was told I had malaria. 4. At 21 I had the opportunity to be in a 707 that slid in on a foamed runway since the wheels would not all come down. 5. At 21 somewhere over the Atlantic, our C-141 was ordered back to Texas after an emergency deployment to Israel. May not cound as "near death" to you, but it did to me! 6. 2nd jump at Spaceland, did a low 90 turn to avoid trees and a fence. Hit before the canopy on my stomach and chest, bounced up and landed in a canal full of water on my back. Thought I was gona' drown until one of the instructors came to my rescue. Later thinking about the ground hit and bounce I realized how lucky I had been. I remember "the sound" and then being airborne again. Blue skies, Jim
  14. Seems like this thread came up earlier this year, but it is worth repeating: In Texas, a lawyer can petition the court and intervene on behalf of ANY minor by claiming the parents/guardians were negligent to allow the minor to participate in such activity. So even if the parents and all relatives don't sue, some ambulance chaser can intervene without the parents/guardians permission and sue the socks off the DZ, tandem instructor, aircraft owner, parachute manufacturer, etc. Blue skies, Jim

  16. With around 222 total jumps you should stick with your canopy a little longer. Learn to fly it completely. It will do more than you think. Remember how it lands on no wind days and think of how a smaller canopy will land on a no wind day! If you are having to run out a no wind landing on your 190, you are not ready to downsize. In an emergency situation where you have to land downwind, it will be much faster. Can you handle that? Whatever decision you make, stay conservative so we will have the opportunity to jump with you someday. Blue skies, Jim
  17. I didn't get any pics! We did a great 5-point Texas star (shoulda' heard the singing led by Larry Henderson! If I get a copy of the pic I will post it. Overall the event was great! Good people, good dz and excellent pilots. But it was to damn hot! Even for us Texians. Blue skies, Jim
  18. I'm not gona' tell you becuase you wouldn't jump with me at WFFC! Blue skies, Jim
  19. My highest was 30,500 AGL, but we usually get 13,000 to 14,900 at Spaceland. I would guess the average is 14K. Blue skies, Jim
