Any dz in the US want a Super Otter for the weekend? We need to move the plane out of Hurricane Rita's path and it would be nice to fly a few loads while we are sitting around. Call Steve at 281-369-3337. Thanks everyone! Blue skies, Jim

Where does USPA require waivers to be videotaped? It must be a CA thing because Elsinore tapes also. Everything else is the same as any other USPA dz. Blue skies, Jim

Things to Keep In Mind Regarding a Cutaway
gemini replied to Bandanarama's topic in Safety and Training
That is really scary. re: thread from earlier in the summer about jumpers not clearing their cables. The only thing I want to think about during a situation is cutaway, clear cables, and deploy reserve. I don't care about the handles at all. I will look for the main and freebag if there is enough altitude and a decent landing area. My goal is to walk away from the landing and jump another day. I will replace the gear someday anyway. As of 6 AM this morning the models are beginning to concentrate on Matagorda as the more likely landfall. Houston & Spaceland will be on the dirty side of the storm if this is accurate. Blue skies, Jim

Some of us are staying while the families leave. Some of the DZ folks have no other place to go. Evacuations are in full swing now with hospitals moving patients from the coast, and level 1 (people living at sea level near the coast) in the first wave. I45 is moving very slowing and was ealier this afternoon bumper to bumper from Galveston to almost IAH which must be 100 miles of traffic. Freeways are pretty quiet now; in fact they seem quieter than normal! One gas station I went to is accepting cash only and is out of regular, the other is also out of regular. Most stores have sold out of gal bottled water. Generators and plywood sold out early this afternoon. More supplies are promised before the storm by Walmart and Home Depot and the major grocery stores. Apparently in Texas they have the supplies prestaged at central warehouses.

Uh oh, not good news. Here's the latest projected tracks. An earlier turn to the North is not good for Houston. 8 models showing landfall between Matagorda and Galveston. Note that there are more showing a Beumont - New Orleans landfall now too. Blue skies, Jim

what was the very first 45,album,cassette,or cd you ever owned?
gemini replied to caress's topic in The Bonfire
On 45 it was Rhythm of the Rain by the Cascades. I think I was 11 and saw them in concert and decided I really liked that song! Blue skies, Jim -

New projections are out and attached. Still looks like Southwest of Houston is most likely landfall. Blue skies, Jim

Thanks. Only BA is on-site right now. Waiting on the NOAA 4PM update. Blue skies, Jim

To bad you missed this great San Diego event: Two-hundred Chihuahuas raced against each other for a goody bag and free food. Herky would have been in doggy heaven on earth! Blue skies, Jim

He does have better taste than that, and I don't think he has ever bought me a drink stronger than diet coke!

Interesting story on the news the day after the cards were issued. A tatoo artist was complaining: 1) Because people were coming into the shop and trying to buy tatoos with the card and he was refusing to work on them. 2) He was watching them use their cards at an ATM across the street from the shop and then come back in with cash and demanding he work on them. Just goes to show you how really difficult it is to effectively create a team of good flyers who can work together and successfully compete. I know a lot of freeflyers who are excellent solo flyers, but don't have the time or money to build their skills to the level required to successfully compete. There are even a few teams who tried competing once or twice and never competed again; And they are all good flyers! Blue skies, Jim
