opening low may not be gross negligence.. but falling into your cypres is! again, i'm a dirty high puller, so.. but thats just my point of view.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. Thompson "No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try." -Yoda -
what's the deal with packers in the US!?
virgin-burner replied to virgin-burner's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ha ha, I stand corrected! You DO have a tremendously diverse WOOOOOORLD of skydiving experience! We're both newbies here my man. Keep askin Q's, only way to get the A's. Where did you get the impression that no American fun jumpers pack though? Still interested purely out of curiosity. I know we Americans tend to have a certain Int'l rep, didn't realize it crossed into skydiving. i did say MOST, not all sport jumpers wouldnt pack themselves. reading around here gave me that IMPRESSION. and i'm not talking about instructors, i do have a certain understanding that they wont pack themselves if they're at a busy dropzone. when i checked yesterday in the classifieds/employments, on the first page alone there were six packers looked for. if i remember correctly, that was more than say AFFIs or TIs.. -

i've been jumping at four different dropzones in the radius of about 300 kilometers. that is about 200 miles, maybe a bit less.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. Thompson "No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try." -Yoda -

is that an invitation!? 13$ is eloy, right? i might just do that.. and sorry for those that felt offended. reading around here really leaves a funny taste in your mouth sometimes.. even for an enlighted, over-educated european that speaks and understands around five different languages.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. well, i'm one little jumper from one of the smallest countries in the world and a noob at that. i wont change the system how things are handled here. i'm being open tough and speak how things are handled over here. and i try not to judge how others are handling things. if someone didnt understand the sarcastic remark, well, thats another story.. at least, i post a question in the open, and ask for others opinions. if that is wrong, the forum looses its base for existence.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. what speaks against paying attention to those things while packing and checking again before boarding yourself? i speak to pretty much every new or old face at the dz anyway.. -
what's the deal with packers in the US!?
virgin-burner replied to virgin-burner's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
you might be correct with that.. i didnt say there was anything wrong with it. i just stated what was common practice over here. i dont doubt that, but its usually due to a packing error. if you try to avoid that, its less likely to happen.. if i'm off ways, please dont hold back educating me.. i dare to disagree on the second part of that post. while there's nothing wrong with paying a packer, except i'm missing out on the money for more jumping, nobody should know my gear better than me! i feel people are offended a little. i'm just asking a question, if you cant bother answering or feel pissed off about it, then dont! -

maybe you should read better: i wrote that i had the IMPRESSION that it was common over there to use packers. i also noted that i've only been jumping in my country. -

coz i'm trying to move careful in the plane in order not to dislodge it. i can easily get there to feel it. i checked it on the ground visually.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. Thompson "No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try." -Yoda -

because i pack my own shit and spend a great deal on care about it! most malfunctions are due to packing errors if i'm not mistaken.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. Thompson "No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try." -Yoda -

because we do it ourselves!? you are responsible for your safety and your gear! simple.. now, if you see someone that has something hanging out, of course you'll tell them. but your initial checks, you do yourself! “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. i completely agree with you, i just feel skydiving to be way too dangerous to let someone else "fuck around" with my gear. as nick said, we're being taught to be quite self-reliant. we dont do pinchecks on others for example. you, and yourself are lonely responsible for your gear. so packing it, is a major part of that. i do know in theory how to put a three-ring together, never having done it, puts me to shame tough.. but packing is such an everyday thing.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. wingsuits in USA today on friday.

by ass-whooping 3% as of now! -
I'd venture to say I have quite a few more wingsuit flights than you do. I didnt vote for it because it's not a very good photo, that said I think the only pic that is worse is the Eagle and that's winning I notice you didn't deny being grumpy with a bad haircut. we're currently in the lead by 3%!! woohoo!!! “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. that might be a reason, but i dont think the majority earns somewhere around 60 or 80 grand a year!? jumping in europe is quite expensive at around 40$ +/- a pop. i'm too lazy to look up the exchange rate.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. maybe it was a silly question after all, i just got the impression most up jumpers would not pack for themselves.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. Thompson "No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try." -Yoda -

virgin-burner replied to virgin-burner's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i agree, teams that train bring a packer, but thats someone they get on their own, not someone employed by the dropzone usually. in switzerland, with about 7 million people, we have around 1000 regular jumpers. sure its not a lot, and honestly, i've only been jumping around here, so i dont know any better. thats why i've been asking this question.. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S.
