This has been discussed frequently here. Try a search. I recently noted that my employer offers group "accidental death" insurance in addition to group life insurance. I intend to look into that during the next open enrollment period as a low cost supplement to my life insurance. I bought my life insurance about 20 years before I began skydiving. Question for anyone with a license
GLIDEANGLE replied to lindseyxo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Here is the REAL issue... If you determine that he has been lying about skydiving.... How will you ever trust him about anything that really matters? The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others! -
Whiner! How bad could this be? It only a reserve, thus not likely to be used. Heck, the worst case scenario is probably only an out of sequence deployment @ terminal speed. Real men can handle a slammer! (Anyone who thinks I am being serious needs to put down the caffiene and back away from the keyboard.) The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

D-License & a lot of thanks
GLIDEANGLE replied to GLIDEANGLE's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I started jumping three years ago this month. Yesterday I made my 500th jump and earned my D-license. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to many, many people who made this possible and pleasant! I am sure that I will forget to mention someone…. I apologize in advance. THANK YOU… -- To Ernie Long and his team of instructors and coaches…. Not only did you give me a good start, you have remained a source of encouragement, information, & mentoring. -- To Dr. Lee Schlichtemeier and his wife Carol for running a safe, fun, and hospitable DZ. -- To Svien and Eddie for hundreds of safe flights to altitude and (mostly) great spots. -- To Ron for giving me great skydiving “career” guidance. -- To Laura for taking me under her wing early in my career. -- To the many load organizers at Skydive Dallas who have given me many, many, great jumps and lots of guidance about how to be a better skydiver. -- To my teammates for the last two seasons of 4-way FS: Roland, Kirk, David, Johnathan, Sean, David, and Bryce. I learned so much from each of you… and had a great time. You were more than patient with my numerous errors and brain locks. -- To Jeff for teaching me lots about rigging. Jeff: My primary skydiving goal this year is to finish my rigger ticket! (Maybe by declaring that in public will give me the pressure to FINISH.) -- To Michael Nowatney for being a great teacher and friend. I will always cherish my memory of you being a delightfully “bad” student during my coach candidate evaluation jump. I wish that you could have joined me on my 500th jump…but I know that you were with us in spirit. Blue Skies. -- To the many wonderful jumpers at Skydive Dallas, who have become a new family for me. To the many non-jumpers who made this journey easier: -- My wife, who lets me spend $$$ and be gone a lot. -- Bo, who picked me up when I landed out. -- Beckie and Val, who kept on top of the insanity in manifest. -- Debbie and her gang, who help keep my accounts straight. -- Laura, Sara, Jim, & Chris, whose pack jobs surprise me by opening every time! -- My faithful dog Katy who is always eager to go to the DZ, eager to see me after I jump, a great party dog, and a vigilant guard as I sleep. Plus, a final thanks to all those I have forgotten to mention. I can’t wait to see what the next three years hold for us!!! The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others! -
Why wait until I am on the ground? Simple, clearing my ears can take 30-60 seconds... time I don't have to mess around while under canopy. Further valsalva can result in transient vertigo... not something I want under canopy. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

I have ear problems following every jump, but I have learned to handle them. The key for me is to equalize my ear pressure IMMEDIATELY upon landing. The longer that they stay unequalized the more the membranes are under stress and the more that they swell. If I equalize promptly I can jump numerous times in a weekend without any trouble, if not..... I will have fluid in my ears for a week. I will equalize my ear pressure BEFORE picking up my canopy. Of course, safety issues such as getting off the runway or keeping an eye on folks landing after me are more important than clearing my ears. Tandem Doomsday Scenario
GLIDEANGLE replied to skydived19006's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
How so? Was that in the a contract between the manufacturer and buyer? Is there an oblication incurred through the TSO process? My bet is that they DO NOT have that obligation and can walk away at any time. Caveat Emptor. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others! -
If this becomes the beginning of the end of tandems in the US, then we need to re-title this thread: Sad News for ALL Jumpers. Rare is the DZ that doesn't rely on tandems to keep the lights on and the prop turning. If tandems go away, most the turbine DZs can just wave as their fast aircraft go away too. February where how long in US Training question
GLIDEANGLE replied to mousa69's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In addition to considering weather and instructional program, consider proximity to a vertical wind tunnel. For example: -Both Elsinore and Perris Valley are in reasonable proximity to the tunnel at Perris Valley. -Skydive Arizona has a tunnel. -I suspect that Several Florida Dzs are in reasonable proximity to the Orlando tunnel. Best of all would be to find an instructional program that includes tunnel time to accelerate your learning. I expect that you will find such programs at the DZ's which have their own ( or a close relationship with) a tunnel. If I recall correctly, Skydive University in Florida has a program where you go to the tunnel first, and then are able to skip some AFF levels. Good luck in your hunt and your jumping. Buying a rig, found one but not sure if I should get it...
GLIDEANGLE replied to treyman32003's topic in Gear and Rigging
Some folks will say this canopy is ok for you. However, USPA recommends wingloading maximum 1.0 for students AND A & B license holders (SIM 5-3,B,5). USPA also considers A canopy of this size to be "advanced equipment" when loaded greater than 0.9 lb /sq ft (SIM 6-10,B,3) remember wing loading is driven by EXIT wt, not body wt. Skydive Dallas uses Skydive University coaches extensively for students between AFF and A-license. We use the Skydive University techniques and curriculum. This is a very structured series of ground preps, jumps and debriefs. We get really good results. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

Do AFF jumps count towards your A License?
GLIDEANGLE replied to AStack75's topic in Safety and Training
All good advice above. In my student experience, and observation of others, lack of landing accuracy often keeps folks from getting their license at 25 jumps. Far better to learn it all well and slowly, than to barely meet the standard and get licensed at 25 jumps. 1. This isn't a race. 2. The price of some errors can be VERY high. 3. This is about having FUN. 4. Smile, Breathe, Relax. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others! -

I jump a Bonehead Havok. I too, have had trouble with fogging. I get fog in the plane and while floating but none in FF.... I bet due to increased airflow through the helmet. The steps below help, but I still find that I often have a sudden burst of fog right at canopy deployment time (I presume due to a big, post-track exhalation). 1. I get less fog if I keep the lens REALLY clean. 2. I complained to Bonehead and they sent me anti-fog slime that improved but did not solve problem. 3. I keep the lens up until "Door!". Good Luck! My Pro-Track will often sound off at break off and deployment altitudes even if I am on a hp & pop under a big, slow canopy. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

Weirdest Malfunction ever - packing mistake?
GLIDEANGLE replied to mindcool's topic in Gear and Rigging
A direct quote from the 2009 USPA SIM (5-1, E): "horseshoe (the container is open but the parachute is not properly deployed because something is snagged on the system)," By this definition the lines entagling with a slider stowage device or even the main container flaps would be a "horseshoe". Male here. Natural every time. Large breasts are WAY over-rated. They can actually be a huge problem, obstacle, & nusiance. I would pay for a reduction far more readily than an augmentation. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

Why the comment "Do you know the accuracy trick?" is useless: Without context (additional instruction) it has no utility until you are on final and it is too late. TKs approach gives it additional context. Almost always this "help" was offered in isolation, as if this single idea was all that was necessary. My recent posting about “Skydiver Integrity and Logbook Veracity” provoked an interesting discussion of the value of landing accurately as a life saving skill. Given that many experienced jumpers consider landing accuracy to be important, HOW DO YOU TEACH IT? Let me be clear. I am NOT talking about “classic accuracy” (with big canopies, funny shoes, and tuffets); I am speaking of everyday “sport accuracy”. First off, any difficulty that I had with learning accuracy is entirely my own fault. Once licsensed, I often found it difficult to get helplful guidance to improve my landings and/or accuracy. Getting feedback about freefall was easy, as other jumpers saw my performance, and they had a stake in me getting better… to be a suitable playmate for them. However, as long as I wasn’t a hazard in the pattern, other jumpers had no stake in my landings or accuracy. Getting teased or harassed about my lousy landings was easy… getting effective help was another matter altogether. It was easy to get useless help like “Do you know the accuracy trick?” That was useless because, by the time I was headed at the target and could use the accuracy trick, 90% of the critical decisions were already made. SDU teaches the novice to move the entire pattern to compensate for the degree to which the previous landing was off target… while this is a great novice technique, it has no value when trying to land the FIRST time or when conditions are changing. The two canopy control courses I took both focused on MACRO accuracy such as getting back from a long spot… not a word was spoken about MICRO accuracy of getting close to a specific target on the DZ. So…How do you teach your students to land accurately? How do you help your low-time licensed jumpers improve their accuracy? ++ Do you video and debrief student landings? ++ Do you video and debrief non-student landings? ++ Do you teach Germain’s “D” point? ++ Do you teach TK’s rising target technique? ++ Do you teach braked approaches for accuracy? ++ Do you hold sport accuracy contests to focus attention and reward accuracy? ++ Do you pretend that the problem is too hard and ignore teaching accuracy? Thank you in advance for your time. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

OK, so y'all think the standard is wrong. Fair enough. What have you done to attempt to persuade the USPA BOD to change the standard? Simply ignoring the standard does no one any good. I don't know if the standard is reasonable or not, it took me over 400 jumps to get 25 2m landings. Unquestionablely, that is 'cuz I am a slow learner about landings (it took me forever to stand up more than half of my landings...) The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others! -
