The Racer from Jump Shack has a significantly different reserve PC arrangement with two reserve pins located against the jumper's back. http://www.jumpshack.com/ The folks I know who jump Racers really like them and almost always say the same thing: "It is the most comfortable rig I have ever jumped". You will find that Racers often provoke strong opinions from jumpers and riggers (both positive and negative). The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

I know of NO "journals" on skydiving which would be interested in a theoretical paper about anything. Skydivers are not much interested in theoretical papers. The two skydiving magazines that I know of work the other way around... first you do the jump, then you tell about it (with LOTS of pictures). So... After a couple of years (& $$$$), let us know how your new technique worked out. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

1. Smile, Breathe, Relax. You will be taught all you need to know before your first jump. Yes, it is possible to know too much for your first jump. 2. Try this glossary: http://www.uspa.org/SIM/Read/Glossary/tabid/173/Default.aspx The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

Dr. Westman: You are not accepting PMs. I know two jumpers with Type 1 DM. Neither of them frequents DZ.com. One has several thousand jumps and is an AFF instructor. The other is a relatively inexperienced jumper. Please provide your contact information and I will do my best to direct them to contact you. Very, very cool. Much cooler than the real-time videos. I found the water on the back of the wingsuit facinating. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

I wrote to a Facebook friend that I was REALLY missing jumping. Her reply was: “What is it that you miss? The adrenaline - the sense of freedom?” Here is what I wrote: My first answer was going to be "BOTH", but it is much more complicated than that. I miss the sense of: -Camaraderie on the airplane; -Anticipation when the pilot says “two minutes”; -Focus as the pilot says “door”; -Energy as the “exit” light turns green; -Intensity like nothing else as I release the plane and accelerate to terminal speed; -Connection as we build formations with no words said… watching for a smile and a twinkle in the eye to tell me what is going on in the mind of my clone; -"Flow" when we get it right and the formations are smoothly forming and transitioning; -Urgency as we break the formation and track away from each other; -Curiosity as I deploy my main canopy… “Will it work?”; -Release as I see a good canopy overhead; -Peace as I fly my canopy over the terrain; -Analytic satisfaction as I solve the three dimensional puzzle of approach and landing ; -Triumph as I land my canopy standing up on the target! My friend replied: ”Thanks for the insight.“ My wife replied: “You forgot the beer dear!” The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

New Zealand Skydiving Diploma?
GLIDEANGLE replied to Risky14's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Do you know what a professional skydiver without a girlfriend is called? Homeless (Obviously not always true... but making a living as a skydiver can be tough. Yes, I know some full time professional skydivers who are not on food stamps.) The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others! -

Another very dumb packing question...
GLIDEANGLE replied to shah269's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
As I read this, it isn't a packing issue... It is a closing loop issue. Premature openings can hurt or kill you and others. Be damned sure you have a tight closing loop! I have a friend in a wheelchair from a premature main deployment while sitflying. This is SERIOUS business. Fix the closing loop! The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others! -
I am pretty sure that the tunnel coaches in the SDU TAFF program are AFF-Is and thus VERY aware of the "50 second" issue. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!
-
1. Skydive U (SDU) is a reputable training school. 2. The SDU "Tunnel AFF" (TAFF) program is coached tunnel time followed by a MODIFIED / accelerated AFF program. 3. I would have NO qualms about sending a family member to Rob Laidlaw's TAFF program @ SDU. 4. There is nothing cheap about skydiving! Tunnel time is generally cheaper than freefall per minute... But the learning curve is MUCH steeper. The best skydivers in the world use the tunnel A LOT to become better. Compare the cost of TAFF with the cost of regular AFF with repeating one or two levels... I bet that suddenly TAFF looks like a bargain! I suspect that TAFF students repeat fewer levels. Regarding bringing a date to the DZ: You can leave $7000 worth of gear unattended at the DZ and it will probably be fine. However, never leave your girlfriend or beer unattended lest they be stolen! The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!
-
One thing to consider is that going to other DZs can introduce new variables to the jump which may not be a good idea for a student: Different Aircraft (may need different exit). Different Landing Zone . Different rental gear. Be sure to get a good orientation to the new DZ. Ask about any of the above which may be different. Remember that as a student (not yet licensed) you remain under USPA instructor supervision. That means that the instructors/DZ can impose additional restrictions on you if they feel that they are appropriate. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!
-
Consider yourself VERY lucky to be only an hour from a good DZ W/ turbine aircraft. Many folks drive 3-4 times further! Getting to the DZ and being grounded by the weather is just part of the sport. There is much to learn at the DZ without jumping. Just watching how other folks fly the pattern and land (both good and bad) can be quite worthwhile. It is typical that your non- jumping friends won't understand or want to try jumping. Don't worry, the skydiving community is quite welcoming. You won't be lonely and missing your friends at the DZ. In the USA.... the following applies to riggers: FAR 65.129 — Performance standards. No certificated parachute rigger may— (e) Pack, maintain, or alter a parachute in any manner that deviates from procedures approved by the Administrator or the manufacturer of the parachute; So... YES the H/C manufacturer can definitely decide what can be packed with their gear. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

What do do/learn after getting licensed?

Follow the "college skydiving" link on the page I suggested above for belly flying info. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others! -
I would love to know how many jumps as coach that these folks had made. I wonder if they were folks who had few, if any, coach jumps. I had the benefit of 50 jumps as a coach before I went to my AFFIRC. As a result, I had done all the tasks except the AFF-I freefall tasks many times with students. This made my evaluation jumps SO MUCH less stressful. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

How about a canopy control course, or working on the USPA Canopy Proficiency card? http://www.uspa.org/Portals/0/Downloads/Form_Canopy_Prof_Card_2007_04.pdf The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others! -
As above plus... A jumpsuit and/or gloves can make a big difference if you slide out a landing. "Road rash" from a no-wind sliding landing can be really uncomfortable. Picking gravel out of your palm after a bungled landing can be no fun either. Sometimes I go suitless (just shorts and a T-shirt) if I need a REALLY fast belly down fall rate. (Weather permitting. Other times I can get that speed with my tight suit or addding weight.) The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

I have no experience in this, but I do have a thought: I suspect that there is a big difference between having only one arm, and having two arms (only one of which can be controlled). The latter case raises the question: What is the bad arm doing during freefall? The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!
