Damn, FINALLY! I guess I will have to get my ass some more exposure. I thought for sure Monkey was gonna come in and get it. And most of the NM jumpers were in both of those cars, you all fail at remembering the good times, apparently. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

When I was getting into photography, it was explained to me as such: RAW is like having an entire encyclopedia of information in a photograph, JPG is like having the Spark Notes. Sometimes, all you need is Spark Notes, but if you have the time, why not utilize the encyclopedia? The only downside I can find with shooting in RAW is the internal memory of the camera can't handle that many sequential shots. It's a pretty safe assumption that moist people here are using Rebel XT's, XTi's and XSi's for a few lucky ones. In JPG, if you lay into the bite switch you'll get that magnificent shutter firing- CLICKCLICKCLICKCLICKCLICKCLICKCLICKCLICKCLICKCLICK. In RAW, it'll be more of a CLICKCLICKCLICKCLICKCLICK....CLICK......CLICK.............CLICK................CLICK so there will be many great exit shots whereas you get on the ground and wonder why all the other pictures you took on that jump aren't on the card, and realize it's because your camera spent the whole skydive processing the pictures you already took. The higher end cameras (20D is alright as I understand, 40D is great) tend to handle this better and can process many more photos at a time than the others. In my experience. I helped my roommate out with a project which called for a 30-second commercial for a fake product. Of course he left it til the last minute, and I had today to film and edit it. It stars my roommate/best friend Justin Graham, who is the point guard for the San Jose State basketball team. It is meant to emulate the Powerthirst commercials, and for those who haven't seen them, they are much, much funnier than this. But for one day, I thought this was amusing enough to post in the bonfire... http://youtube.com/watch?v=HtvdL-veD_4 It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

I have two nice, sunny, California-summer naked jumps, both of which even had some attractive ladies on them. Of course, all that luck ran out this summer when I did the pictured naked jump. We were told there was light rain at altitude, so we went for it. I wish I knew where the video footage was, because I opened the door and screamed "Oh fuck, the rain hurts!" Come to find out on climbout it wasn't rain, but hail. The hail lasted til about 7,000 feet, where it turned to rain (usually painful, now a welcome sensation). The rain hung around til about 4,000, where it turned back into the warm, dry weather everybody on the ground was experiencing. Oh, and this was a night jump. So as far as I can tell, we are the only people to have done a 3-way naked night jump through hail and rain. Hard to tell by the picture, but we also all looked like we had chicken pox. I can safely say that this is one of the most painful experiences of my life. Lesson learned? Keep jumping with the ladies is the warm California summer sky (Although I think I was on one of Monkey's 2 mentioned naked jumps... what an honor!). Edit to add the close-up of my buddie's arm.... I would love to tell you I have a fix for i, but I don't. I can, however, sympathize with you. My camera was doing the exact same thing until I accidentally knocked it off my desk. Has worked great ever since. Edit to add: I don't think the lens had anything to do with it, as I had been jumping it for a few weeks before the exposure issues arose... Lets not forget the unexpected, sudden costs... Imagine a cutaway that involves a snag on a camera helmet. By my best guess, here is the approximate cost: Flat Top Pro: $800 Camcorder: $300 (I use a really cheap one, too) Still Camera: $1200 Fisheye Lens: $600 Memory Card: $80 Cameye/mounting hardware/cutaway system/cables: $250 So that's a little over $3,000 in the helmet alone. This is all assuming that the main is not lost, and of course not figuring in the cost of a repack and all that fun business. I have a friend in the sport who not only accomplished this amazing feat, but it was also on the first day out with the new helmet setup (riser slap on the FTP opened the latch, slid right off his head.) Actually, I should clarify it wasn't about the 40D specifically, just the two materials being compared. And of course, I can't find the links now... they were through a link which I found in a photography forum, which I found through a google search... I will keep looking but right now I can't re-find them. BUt I do think you were right... I recall them mentioning the 30D and 400D a lot, as well as some Nikon's (D70 I think?...) And yes, I thought it odd that they would go through the trouble of creating a whole other assembly process as well, especially with the notion of re-using parts. One salesman mentioned something about the difference between a metal frame, and and entire metal body... I don't remember exactly. All I really seemed to confirm was the magnesium/polycarbonate mystery. Two people today once again gave me the "different wiring" explanation as well... I really am just not believing anything for now, until I can have it verified from an unbiased source. The general consensus on photography forums seems to be the warranty and firmware are the only differences... and in most cases, just the warranty. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

I actually called about 10 different dealers of the grey market stuff, and this was a consistent answer from all of them.... Funny part is I read a couple reviews online about tests between the two bodies, and it seems the cameras made from the polycarbonate actually responded better to drop-tests than the magnesium bodies . I mean, it makes sense (plastic vs. metal bumpers, physics, impact time, etc). These were tests were not performed by the greay market dealers, haha. Of course, I am no authority to confirm any of that, but it sure would be a funny twist if the grey market stuff was more resistant to drops. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

Okay, I had a new development in this... I confirmed that the difference in the body build on the 40D is that the USA version has the Magnesium-alloy body, while the import has the poly-carbonate body. I don't really know what that means... but it's what I have learned. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

So I went back and forth between my purchase of a 40D lately. I had originally picked up a grey market 40D for about $500, and was more than willing to accept the risk of it since I didn't have the money to dish out for a new body at the time, and the sale of my old camera would have let me break even. Then I realized I HATE grey market stuff and am never cheap when it comes to my photography equipment (as it is part of my job). I was purchasing this 40D as a back up emergency camera for a trip NY. But after reading so much more about the grey market stuff, I just don't know who to believe. Some say the difference on the 40D is more components are plastic, sometimes even the bodies (versus the magnesium-alloy). Others say just the wiring is different (which I don't really like). But even the B&H website said they were the same product with exception to their warranty (which if I can save $700 was a risk I was willing to take on a back-up camera). So does anybody (DSE??) have the true scoop on these grey market cameras? And yes, I am referring to the ones sold my the New York underground home garage operated import ebay powerseller bastard salesman cameras, except I would be getting them through a more viable source... I already own a 40D and love it to death... It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

In this case, it was blocking his clear view of his toggles. Of course, that means that it's also blocking a portion of his view at all times, which is also bad. Lastly, a ringsight has proven to be a snag hazzard, and there are alternatives without the risk. In this case, they were preventing a clear view of his toggles. Of course, that means they were also blocking a portion of his view at all times, which is also bad. Lastly, dark goggles prevent other jumpers from seeing where you are looking, and to some degree the expression you have on your face. In a tandem with video scenario, the TM and camera flyer are able to communicate through hand gestures, and facial expressions (including looking in a certain direction, or at a certain area of the rig). Dark goggles limit this communication. I thought you were referring to this case specifically. There is no question about the ringsight being a snag hazard etc... I assumed he was an experienced tandem vidiographer, or had the experience to be using the ringsight at the least. I thought you meant using a ringsight on a paid tandem video was stupid. And well pointed out about tinted goggles... but does this raise the case for EVER wearing a tinted anything? Perhaps more appropriate for another thread, but there is also a case to be made here for the experience between the TM and the videographer... for the benefit of this thread, I will agree and say yes, dark goggles were a bad choice to pick up prior to getting on the plane (I was also referring to this specific case... if he has 250 jumps with tinted goggles and this TM, they obviously would not have presented any immediate concern prior to this incident.) I would like some clarification as to why jumping the ringsight was stupid. I suppose the only real STUPID conclusion that could come out of that is the combination of dark goggle and the ringsight, and maybe it was a late-evening jump? And I would also like some clarification on why the goggles were stupid. If this jump were made at noon, perhaps they might have been an asset so he wasn't squinting at his canopy through the sun beating him in the face. It sounds like this wasn't the case, but I was just wondering. I assume the goggles are going to provide a much less-constricted field of view than a pair of sunglasses would, something I see vidiots wearing quite often as well. Aside from those two details, I do agree that pretty much everything else was "stupid." I would hope that if you had time to get back from a long spot and hook it that you also had time to set up for a straight-in. Of course, this is not always the case... but if it isn't I think an alt. landing area would have been a wiser choice. I have done many straight-in landings on my Spectre 150 loaded at 1.3 in 15 MPH winds... yeah, it was slow, but it was much safer than swooping a canopy I don't know which is bound up by a malfunction. I don't know your landing area, DZ, canopy skills, experience and I wasn't there. It's easy to say what I would have done when I am siting at a desk talking on an internet forum. In the long run, you are alive and un-injured.... It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye -
Dude.... how about no. Try again later. Maybe he only weighs 120? Geez. Why, I learned about this just the other day in my linguistics class. It's what we refer to as "Principle of Charity," where the "arguer is granted the strongest argument possible where supporting evidence is not blatantly evident." And upon reviewing his profile, it would seem that my sarcasm may prove slightly accurate as he claims to be jumping a 126 reserve to accompany that Pilot. My head is just swelling with knowledge. The first time I jumped at Lodi was from the 99 and when I got on the ground, the first person I talked to was an instructor who came up to me and said "In case nobody told you, the tail on that plane is really low. Try to dive DOWN out of the plane, because while you weren't close, you were closer than is comfortable." It was that simple. No, nobody had told me before, and when I made my next jump from it I remember looking and noticing how low/close the tail actually was. And yes, in reference to the tandems, on my next jump they all started screaming "go" as usual and I am sure I pissed many of them off by waiting until I saw the flaps go down to start my climbout. Also one guy in my group refused to get out before the freeway, which did not earn us very many brownie points either.... -shrug- It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye -
Haha... Frenchy. He called me on the way to this jump, he was extremely excited. He and I have been good pals for some time now. Funny thing is, I was there for his most recent skydive, which was in... July? Anyway, he took the BASE training course, hasn't jumped out of a plane since. I attached some photos I took on the last jump we made together (which I might add was his... 40th or so). If you ever get a chance to meet this guy, don't pass it up. And don't let the TV interviews fool you... he's simply out of control. And French. I love you Frenchy, if you ever read this. BOdy Worlds just left here a couple months ago. There was one night when all college students got in free, and when we showed up they issued us tickets but there were so many people that we were not admitted until almost 3 hours later. We went and got some food and hung out before we came back and it was completely worth it. I would happily pay a reasonable amount of money to see it, for sure. The last night it was in town the exhibit was running for 24 hours. They really put on a nice little show. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

So it appears as though my spidey sense was tingling rather accurately in both of these situations. What bastards. I definitely didn't go through with the deal. When they start telling me what to do I think is where their little scam falls through. It's sad to think about how many other people they have already screwed, because people as a general statement are idiots and won't take the time to look into these kinds of things. I'm glad I did... thanks for the help, everybody. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

Alright, so I just sold a camera to a woman using Facebook marketplace (which by the way, extremely useful). I told her that three other people were looking at buying it (true) and she turned right around with this email. I just don't understand what she means, I am a bit nervous to do anything. Can somebody explain to me please? The whole Western Union, returning money thing... sales tax? Huh? I already denied another buyer because he was Asian (not a racial thing) and spoke horrific english, which sounded along the lines of this woman. In fact, just for gigles, here is that email: Sounded like a drug deal to me, so I let it go since I had other people wanting to buy. But seriously, if somebody could explain to me why this is a better way to do it than me getting paypal $$ and shipping it after I have my money... or why this is a terrible idea (i don't know!) I would really appreciate it. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

According to my research, here is a summary of cures and common things people THINK are cures Coffee-- Does NOT sober you up, only makes you more wide-awake drunk. Caffeine provides a natural cure for a headache, often accredited to helping "cure" a hangover. If coffee is consumed, counter it with two-parts water, because it's gonna come back and kick your ass when the coffee dehydrates you. Juice/Vitamin C-- Fastest cure to a hangover for most people. Provides the body with what it needs to oust the crap you put into it. (I will back this one by saying I usually find myself at the jug of OJ right before I pass out and right after I wake up; always seemed to make me feel better). Also, I got a phone call at 7AM sunday morning which couldn't be ignored... I was trying to talk while find a way to counter the room from spinning. I reached for a bottle of water, chugged most of it, topped it off with some Emergen-C. By the time I got off the phone, I felt infinitely better. And I would like to correct my earlier statement about Vodka being a cure for a hangover... I found the article again, and apparently didn't comprehend it as well as I should have. Here is what it actually says: It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

Subway... delicious, and does the trick. Also, I read (in a book) not too long ago that vodka is a great hangover cure. Something about the enzymes in vodka replace whatever is missing in your blood cells or something. If somebody already said that, I'm sorry... I didn't read any of the other posts. So, in reality, Apple doesn't suck at all is what I am hearing. The iTunes store and the Apple store are two completely different entities. It's like going to Wal-Mart and buying a gift card to the Subway that they have at the front of the store, and then getting pissed when you can't use it in the electronics section. The obvious choice has already been pointed out. Go to the Apple store, buy an iTunes gift card. And people who have to ask how to turn a computer off are the exact people that shouldn't be using them. There's a neat trick where you push a button, commonly known as the "power button." Once pressed the computer will turn to you and say, "Do you want me to turn off?" and all you have to say is, "Yes." People who can't figure that out deserve a PC because they suck equally. I was watching it thinking, "Oh, this is cool." But then I choked on Raising Bran I was laughing so hard at that swoop. I thought you were just trying to make it back to the beach. Boy, was I wrong.
