GoPro specs out minimum class 4 SD card. In other words what speed is the SD card you are using? I just worked with a friends GoPro HD he just bought but the card he ordered (class 6) from another vendor was not in yet so we used my class 2 card to check out the unit and after copying to PC and playing back we experienced the same issues you are. After rendering the file in Vegas 9 it played perfect. I asked my friend if his class six card came in but have not heard back. My thoughts that night were that the class 2 card we had to try out had write speeds that may have been too slow? Just my initial thoughts. Without testing with the faster card on the same camera I can not say for sure if that was what we had run into. John Maggio

There are many many dvd players out there that only play DVD-R type discs. DVD players (the one for the TV) are still being sold new today that do not play DVD+R. The burner speed (16x) seems to give me more problems so I have slowed the burn speed down to 4x or 8x and that seems to help with the disc holding up better / longer. As far as hanging... up does it do this when watching final product on computer after being rendered on the computer? If so than resources (shut down all programs etc..other than what you need for DVD) and try again John Maggio

I have converted old VHS tapes through my video camera and it works fine but is time consuming. The easiest / quickest way I have found to back up all my old VHS tapes is by using a combo DVD burner VHS unit I purchased a couple months ago. Simply put in the blank DVD and source VHS tape and record from tape to DVD. You can even add from different tapes and edit out junk you dont want. Until you finalize the disc you can keep adding to it. It even has fire wire input on front. then if you want to copy on PC for later editing etc you put DVD into PC and use software to rip to HDD. I bought a Toshiba D-VR3 from B&H photo for $350 specs here http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/dvr/product.asp?model=d-vr3 There are other Manufactures out there to choose from. Good luck John Maggio

Andy, I have experienced a similar banding on my epson 2200 and it was when I forgot to select edge smoothing. (just cant' remember if it was horizontal or vertical?) Using glossy or premium luster paper. etc. this may or may not fix it. Also if the printer came with film factory this program lets you easily size the picture to the 4x6 or 8x10 or various sizes and also some minor adjustments. Not nearly as much as photoshop but good for light edits John Maggio

Vegas 4.0 and DVD architect 1.0 is a great editing software and DVD authoring software that I have been using for awhile now and is very powerful and easy to use. If you are a student or teacher you can pick it up for under $300 for both otherwise it is around $800.(Free demo download available http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/download/default.asp) The original company who wrote the program was Sonic Foundry and they were bought out last year by Sony. Here is another site to check out http://www.wideopenwest.com/%7Ewvg/tutorial-menu.htm as well as the company site http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/products/vegasfamily.asp. There are also as you can see by searching these posts many other great software for capturing and editing video that are more or less expensive than Vegas! If you have windows XP you can do basic editing and capturing on windows moviemaker for free. John Maggio

I have had the Epson 2200 for about 2 months now and the main reason I went with the 2200 over the 1280 was the ink cartridge set up. It has 7 individual ink cartridges so when the light magenta runs out you are only replacing that color and not throwing away anything other than the empty cartridge. If I understand the Epson 1280 it has a black cartridge and a color cartridge with all the color inks in one container. I guess if you run out of a particular color and have to change the cartridge you may be throwing away ink still in there from the other colors. On the 2200 I will go through 3 or 4 light magenta to one magenta and 2 or 3 light cyan to 1 cyan and 2 light black to 1 black and so on. The extra $250.00 hardware cost spent on the 2200 should be made up with ink savings over the life of the printer I have roughly come up with a 1.1 cent per square cost for full color photo prints. 8x10=80 sq. x 1.1=$88 cents ink cost for the 8 x 10 print. I bought the 2200 for $600.00 including shipping Both models have excellent quality prints. John Maggio

Adjusting Cypres firing height for Comfort
groundrushpull replied to velo90's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Actually Dave although I did not state this on my original posts to try and avoid all these arguments about personal preferences to gear choices etc. I would ALWAYS SET MY CYPRESS TO A LOWER FIRING ALTITUDE THAN THE DEFAULT!...Now I am sure to be once again damned by many of you who know what is right for me and everyone because it is right for them! I don't jump a cypress anymore because the manufacturer played their little marketing games with everyone after they became the AAD of choice and then released the OH YEA THEY WON"T BE ANY GOOD AFTER 10..UH I MEAN 12 YEARS-para-phrased...SO WE CAN SELL EVERYONE NEW ONES$$$. I remember all the significant numbers people came up with after the 911 tragedy and i guess we can all come up with various altitude scenarios that can justify setting the activation altitude either higher or lower or whatever. JUST IMAGINE the possibilities. you wrote: "I have seen experienced jumpers having all sorts of problems adjusting their cypres. I would hate people to get the idea that this can be done lightly." If there are experienced skydivers that have problems with using their own equipment that would suggest more training. The cypress is actually a simple device to operate once shown in that it ONLY HAS ONE BUTTON AND ONE DISPLAY TO UNDERSTAND! You wrote"You may want prefer it, if your cypres fires 150 ft or indeed 400 ft higher. BUT, to acheive this by calibration of the landing height before a jump is NOT the answer." So what is the answer? As far as Astra/cypres and now the VIGIL AAD I am glad there is more real competition in the AAD market for all of us consumers! Cypres set their "decision altitude" for their device at 750 ft. What if 13 or so years ago when they intorduced the cypres the default altitude was 900 feet then we would be using that number in our dicussions to not do this because of that. It is all relative. They are good but not GOD. Informed decisions, decisions, decisions! John Maggio -
0.3 wide angle lenses - need help
groundrushpull replied to Stremglove's topic in Photography and Video
Yep Diamond .3 is da bomb. from .3 to about a .6 setting is available range for jumping. You essentially have all the lenses from .3 to .6 by simple using the zoom to which one you want (field of view) If you want to use it for ground video it is good to but...you can't use it to zoom in past about 20% of the zoom bar (past .6) other wise it looses focus and goes blurry. If you want a .6 sony lens i have no need for it anymore....$20.00 John Maggio -
Best Video/Still Helmet Configuration
groundrushpull replied to Maximus1's topic in Photography and Video
I have seen some people with the side mount camera box simply put a counter weight on the opposite side of the helmet. A 1 pound weight or whatever weight is close to the same weight as the camera and tape it down /secure it with gaffers tape and or drill holes and use plastic tie downs etc. to the helmet to act as a counter balance. John Maggio -
Yep The diamond .3x lens from Max Cohn is great. No black corners and it can zoom from .3 to about .6 so it "so far" seems like the lens that does it all. My first jumps with it were this weekend and the video came out great. I strongly suggest checking out the lens on http://www.royal-lens.com It is worth the price. John Maggio

Digital editing - dropped frames? Help!
groundrushpull replied to ledders's topic in Photography and Video
I have same problem from a 1.6ghz pent 4 512 mb ram laptop. I have a sony pc-5 doing same thing when PTT it misses at times. I then tried a pc100 and a pc9 doing exactly the same process and both of these cameras worked fine. I am pretty sure it is my camera which is causing the problem. I figure when I am ready to P.T.T. then I will borrow a friends camera for the hour or so to finish until i fix or replace the pc-5. John Maggio -

just my own thoughts....just my own thoughts....just my own thoughts....just my own thoughts....don't forget about the incidents where RSL's have killed or injuried.........ROLL THE DICE. U pays your money and takes your chances. John Maggio

RSL's are for students, low time jumpers and people who aren't able to pull their own handles! I never want an RSL to pull my reserve for me when i chop my main while spinning on my back.....from a main malfunction.....etc,etc...just my own thoughts.... John Maggio

Just so you all know as far as i know the sony ip5 and ip7 are not compatible with all the other sony cameras we have tried to fire wire to/from....for some reason sony DID NOT make them compatible in that way..............let me know if anyone else has found out anything different since we tried this summer/fall/....as far as i and many otheres are concerned this rules out these models for general skydiving use..although u can still put on hard drive etc... I read your post and was confused about your info. I forwarded it to the manufacturer and Nancy responded with this info...I am sure if you have any questions u can get a hold of her directly Hi John, I went to dropzone.com and couldn't find the thread, but perhaps you would be so kind to post this reply for me. The facts are these: There have been many fatalities associated with single sided RSLs. Most occurred because the RSL- linked riser released prior to the non-linked side. At least one fatal entanglement occurred because a main tandem riser with an RSL connection broke. Another single-side RSL fatality occurred because a static line student accidentally snagged his left (RSL) side cutaway cable on something (not sure if it was the door) prior to climbing out of a Cessna, resulting in a main deployment with one riser still attached and a deployed reserve. A cross connecting RSL would have prevented that fatality. Single sided RSL's are an accident waiting to happen. You can do everything right, procedurally and still be foiled due to a hesitation in release or the broken riser scenario. There has been one fatality (in over 40 years of cross connected RSL use), associated with a cross connecting RSL due to pilot error, but it did not occur as described by Bill. The reserve will not slide up the lines and choke off or collapse the reserve. There is too much tension on the reserve lines for that to occur. What is likely to happen if you have two inflated canopies out and fail to release at least one snap shackle before cutting away (as is discussed in the Owners Manual in the event of a two canopy out situation, where, by the way, the fall has been arrested, and there is time to evaluate the situation and decide whether or not to cut away), is that you may induce a "butterflying" down plane, as the main canopy will assymetrically load. That is, it will "fly" in and out of a downplane. The important point here is, that knowing your emergency procedures, and knowing your equipment will ALWAYS prevent such an accident. That one fatality was absolutely preventable. What the thread on the internet fails to state, is that the failure modes of the Single sided RSL are greater in number and more severe that the difficult to acheive failure mode of the cross connecting RSL. Read "Everything You Should Know About RSL's" on www.jumpshack.com. The importance of simultaneous release is paramount. That's why John Sherman has spent so much time and energy developing the most reliable release system in the world. Jump Shack has redefined 3-ring riser specifications, introduced extendable / non-commpressible cutaway cable housings, Teflon coated Type 2 A, and Teflon coated, maintainence-free cutaway cables. Jump Shack is the only manufacturer (and Racer is the only harness/container system) that guarantees a 22 pound or less cutaway force (just like your r/c pull force) and simultaneous release (there is a small tolerance there), even under an 8 "G" 200 pound load. 8 G's. Think about the significance of that! It's a multi-layered subject. I will answer other specific questions, if you or they come up with more. Nancy LaRiviere John Maggio

Thanks Pete for getting the pics out on the Rawa. It saved me from taking them. especially since i have the old style. What pete says is what you will get with the product, service and support. although I would strongly recommend NOT using their mounting bracket for top mount camera.Shit look at the line snags there......Take a look at bogen quick release #BG3270 it is only ~$36.00 with shipping and you can mount it so there is nothing outside the normal top size of the helmet. You can even mount it "upside down" so when you are not jumping still camera there is just a rectangular plate-without the bar that locks the other plate(that part stays with the still camera)...you can go to www.adoramaphoto.com and check out the above...it is a really clean design and wont have all the snag point I saw in the pic with the plate you have............... tkanks again Pete and say Hello to everyone at Skydive America....Maggio John Maggio
