  1. unless a debtor has filed an official claim (in writing with the probate court) within one year of your mom's death, the estate is not required to pay it. don't know if that helps.
  2. try taxact.com. you'll pay nothing to prepare online and e-file. if you have a simple return, it's the way to go. you can purchase the deluxe version which provides xxtra help/advice, life events guidance, and free phone technical support (plus e-filing) for $9.95. if you want to include a state return, add another $6.00. i've used it for the last 3 years and love it. i own a home and itemize deductions. my daughter used turbotax this year but didn't want to pay the $30+ e-file fee so she re-did the return using taxact.com. put in the same exact information and taxact found her an extra $500 refund! (it had something to do with college tuition credit)
  3. i wish i had that opportunity... me too. i wasn't even sure if i should share my brief experience here on this forum since i hardly knew him.
  4. i met johnny for the first - and only - time on the day he died. i was at zhills finishing up my aff and coach jumps. i was heading back to my camper in the afternoon, after my last jump of the day. johnny and another guy were walking in my direction and johnny smiled at me made a comment about my being done for the day. i honestly don't even remember what we said to each other, but i do remember his smile and how cool it was that a total stranger had made it a point to engage in conversation with a newbie such as myself and be so damn friendly. as i was getting supper ready i heard the sirens of the ambulences that came for johnny. at a very subdued bonfire that evening i learned that this was the very same guy who had chatted me up a few hours earlier. i heard some amazing stories about the man that night. i don't know if there was any purpose in my having met johnny for that brief conversation, but it is certainly a honor to be able to say i knew him, even for all of 2 minutes. blue skies.
  5. i believe there was another thread - don't remember which forum - about a guy bringing his 17 year old kid for aff instruction somewhere in oklahoma. can a uspa-member dropzone allow under 18 to jump?
  6. Yeah, seriously, what DID you do? it was horrible...unspeakable...i know i'm gonna have nightmares tonight
  7. you'll just have to join her then! they won't let 16 year olds jump here even with parental consent. it makes me wonder what the age requirements are at various other dz's across the country.
  8. good for both of you! they let 16 year olds jump in oklahoma? don't tell my daughter that, she has to wait until she's 18 up here in the northeast.
  9. i don't know if this was discussed here before and forgive the duplicate if so. my dad would love to do a tandem jump this summer, but has a limited range of motion in one shoulder/arm due to an automobile accident many years ago. the question is, would he be able to handle a tandem jump without being able to properly arch? he might also have some difficulty hooking his feet onto the instructor's due to some advanced arthritis, also caused by the accident. any thoughts on this? much thanks!
  10. traveling to z-hills near tampa this past weekend was a dud and i'm no closer to my "a" license than i was before i left new england. out of 3 possible jumping days, the winds were too strong the entire time. so i got to sit and watch the licensed jumpers all day long, waiting for the winds to die down - which they never did. how incredibly frustrating! i did, however, get the opportunity to meet a bunch of the dz locals, and they are a great group of people. friendly, welcoming, and very helpful to the newcomers. tk, the dz owner, gave a couple of us grounded students a great lesson in canopy control accuracy when he saw that we couldn't jump. i even got a pink flamingo to guard my camper
  11. i'm so excited, i am counting down the days until friday! i will be flying from new hampshire to tampa and spending 3 days at z-hills, hopefully finishing up my aff course and doing my first solo jumps. if any of you are planning to jump at z-hills this weekend, give me a shout - it would be great to meet up!
  12. way to go! i hope to follow you this next weekend!
  13. hi lince! i did my first tandem for my 31st birthday, then waited 9 years to do my second tandem. 3 years later, i started my aff course. i'm in a similar climatic situation as you - i live in new hampshire - so my last jump was awhile ago. i'm not all that familiar with static line jumps but i'd certainly recommend doing a tandem first. i don't know how old your boys are - my kids are 20, 17 and 14 - and they think i'm the coolest mom since carol brady
  14. you probably initially lean to the left on openings. So your left leg gets the majority of the opening force and then after full inflation, you move around and distribute the weight evenly. i'll have to start paying attention to that. i think you might be right. or is it left.
  15. i've been finding a bruise on my upper left thigh the day after i jump. i'm thinking it's probably due to a leg strap that's too tight - but it's never on my right leg, just my left. strange.
  16. i really enjoyed reading the story of your first solo jump! i've got one last level to pass before my first solo and it was good to see that it's normal to be nervous. your detailed description will undoubtedly be very helpful when it's my turn.
  17. when i finished my aff ground training a couple of months ago, i was really nervous about going for that first jump (i had 2 tandems under my belt but they were years ago). turns out the winds had picked up during the afternoon and my instructor decided it wasn't safe to go up, so i waited until the following weekend. i'm really glad i had the extra time, just to review everything i needed to do in freefall, and to mentally prepare myself for the jump. i should add that the day i went for ground training, i had *no* clue what was in store for me. it was my birthday and all i was told was "dress comfortably and in layers". it wasn't until the car turned into the dz that i realized what was happening! so i guess i did need that extra time to mentally get myself ready.
  18. yes, i consider myself pretty damn lucky. hopefully i'll pass my final aff level in a couple of weeks, down in florida, and get a solo jump in before i have to come back home.
  19. jumptown closed for the season as of yesterday...a perfect last day too. chris, it's a deal. pass my "e" level for me, will ya?
  20. i'll be coming down from new hampshire on december 8th for a long weekend...but i'm still a student so i can only join in the "after hours" fun. hopefully, by the end of the weekend, i'll be on solo status!
  21. it's worse up here in new england, where the drop zones shut down completely as of november 12th or so. talk about withdrawal! i see you're in the oil business - plenty of jobs in texas for you
  22. welcome, shane. have a great tandem jump, it's a great way to get started. aloha!
  23. welcome! good luck on your level 4 and i hope you have a great jump. i'm jealous of all of you newbies in warmer places who get to jump often.
