Are you afraid of flying your canopy?
Booster_MPS replied to Broke's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Love it! Nothing like being on the first load of the day and flying it down from 11K! -
this is the key issue. Dropzones that focus on the business, the tandems and the teams training have lost the 'culture'. In no way am I attacking your statement, but I have to disagree. My home DZ has weekends where anywhere from 60 to 100 tandems can be booked with an 8 way, 4 way, and a couple free fly teams training. Even with this traffic, we still have a great culture with fun jumpers and strong interaction between visitors, students, AFFI’s and the regulars. I think you CAN have it all in a DZ, however, the staff has to work to cultivate that environment and the DZO has to work to balance all the different interests.

Favourite Way To Exit The Plane?

Nothing like stepping out poised by yourself watching the plane fly away smiling at the next person in the door. -
RW questions - forward movement, fall speed, etc
Booster_MPS replied to chrismgtis's topic in Relative Work
Here is a suggestion on increasing fall rate that I tried for the first time this past weekend that works great – you wont use it in an RW jump but it helps you get down quick if you are chasing somebody down. It is just an alternative to simply arching harder. Fold you wings in! Simply bring your arms in under your body by first making fists with your hands, and then tuck the fists under your collar bone in the center of your body. Just let your forearms align along the center of your body as well. Keep your head up as this will keep you from tilting head down. Head out on a two way and try it diving after somebody out the door. As soon as you get off the hill, tuck your wings and you will feel the increase in speed as you drop. One rookie to another – good luck! Oh, and although I do a ton of RW, I am addicted to my high pulls at 11,000!!!!!!!! -
How many jumps before your SCR?
Booster_MPS replied to steveorino's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Mine came on jump 51 for me a few weeks back and it was really special because I have a lot of respect for the people that organized it and flew it with me. The 9th person flying video was one of my best instructors so it was really special to see her come into the round last to join us. It was a very simple formation and plan, but an extremely gratifying jump for me. -
What does "step-through" mean? ----> packing related
Booster_MPS replied to autoset's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That is an even better way to picture it! As if you were standing in place and did a front (or back) flip and packed it as is. I never thought of steping over just one line - just shows how important it is to properly run the risers and lines up. I suppose you could get the same mal if you front or back flipped your D Back after you had packed your main in it..... -

Nah, I was not a bad boy. For some reason the visualization of what the mal would look like in flight and on the ground and how I could create it came to me - just a matter of being able to see something in your head and it clicking. I have always run my lines up starting with check ot the risers. -

I just figured out exactly what this was this weekend. You can always prevent packing one by always laying down the rig with the container open and facing up. Flip the shoulders of the harness under so that you can reach the beginning of the risers. Start at the rings and ensure the rear riser is on top and NOT twisted and run the front and rear lines all the way up to the canopy. Set your brakes and they run the lines up again ensuring this time you are pulling the brake line from the front and rears by putting them between different fingers as you run them up. Always start from the beginning of the risers. -
I have a related question for those who are packers or those that frequently use packers. I am a relatively new jumper and I plan to travel to check out a couple other DZ’s this year after getting my gear in a couple weeks. I do plan to pack a good bit but I also anticipate that I will be using a packer at times as well. As with anything in life, you get what you give and I am sure the relationship with a new packer is much the same. So here is the question: When visiting a new DZ, what is the best way to introduce yourself to a packer? (and also find the person you want to use) What is the best way to discuss what your expectations are as well as what they expect from you as a client? (stowing brakes/PC/etc) How have you approached this, or if you are a packer, what do you expect from that conversation? Thanks in advance! As an aside, yes I know you take your chances when you do not pack but let’s set that aside for now.

airport security opens reserve

For those of you that have carried your rig onto the plane as a carry on, what do you pack the rig inside of that will still fit in an overhead? -

Was her rig simply checked as is (I hope not) or was it secured inside of another bag or gear bag? -
Thumb tangled in brake line - stupid newbie trick
Booster_MPS replied to GLIDEANGLE's topic in Safety and Training
There is a keeper on the other side of the riser, but this was rental gear and they were not stowed by the previous person. My gear is on the way so this won't be a problem for much longer. -
Thumb tangled in brake line - stupid newbie trick
Booster_MPS replied to GLIDEANGLE's topic in Safety and Training
Hey Glide, the same thing happened to me a month or so ago and it can be a bit un-nerving for sure. Certainly not something that you want to chop for but it was a pain for me to clear. In my situation, the brake line caught the tip of my glove and I was simply caught. I could turn and flare so my choice was to fly it in (it actually cleared during my landing flare). I now consciously look at my toggles and ensure that I have the tips of my fingers firmly in each toggle before releasing my canopy into full flight – I want to grab nothing but the toggle. Also as peregrinrose mentioned, I am more anal about stowing brake line. I will never fly with it unstowed. Overall the even taught me a lot about attention to detail and the need for making deliberate well considered actions about any motion, action or movement under canopy and also in free fall.
