Max exit weight for a Micro Raven 120 reserve canopy?
precision replied to JonnyMac's topic in Gear and Rigging
Unlike today's more modern reserves like the r-Max reserve, the MR-120 is a "previous generation" style ram-air which flys best at about 1lb/sqft. -
Today (August 5th) is Beezy's birthday. In recent years his birthday was typically celebrated at the World Freefall Convention in Quincy, but here are some really old pics from birthdays gone by. Old birthday parties used to have specific themes. 1) Doctor Party: Dr. Beezy Shaw working on patient George Galloway 2) Pioneer Party: Beezy the pioneer with David Galloway 3) Summer of 1955: Beezy Shaw front row, third from right. George Galloway back row, third from right.

Henderson has a website so you can send them an email*** Contact Michelle Mitchell at Henderson Sewing. [michelle@hendersonsewing.com] 1-800-824-5113 Don't even think about talking to anybody else down there. Michelle will make it happen for you. For folders and binders, they usually use Tennessee Attachment, but tell her you want an Atlanta Attachment folder. Michelle is a great resource for all things sewing related. Tell her I recommended her and that you want a discount. George Galloway

hey dude, I was the one who named it. We were developing a better way to get a new ZP canopy into the deployment bag. After pulling the pilot chute out to one side and rolling up the canopy like a sleeping bag, somebody asked if we were going home for the day. I answered "No, we are on the next load!!" The guy said "Man, if you jump that pack job, you are Psycho!" The name stuck. That was 15 years ago and the PsychoPack is still enjoyed by many people, including POTUS. [Three Master Riggers including myself, were involved in packing President Bush's parachute for an AFF jump in Yuma back in the day. Yes, he was definitely PsychoPacked] Read about the PsychoPack in the December 1995 issue of Parachutist Magazine. Chris Martin later suggested we rename it the "Precision Pack", but I don't know about the Smurf thing. So as not to hijack the thread, Yes, the PsychoPack has very definitely been used on many a Velo. No prob. The beautiful openings were just a pleasant surprise at the time, but now it's what the pack job is best known for. George Galloway

I have always included the weight of the main canopy when designing and calculating wing loading for canopies. The canopy has to support itself in all cases.

Beezy's birthday is today as a matter of fact (August 5). I think that we spent at least 50 of his 57 birthdays together. As many people may recall (or not), it was celebrated at the WFFC in Quincy. His birthday in 1955 was most memorable to me, at the Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park in Chattanooga. He had just gotten a new wristwatch for his 5th birthday and it got wet and quit working when we rode down the

The current TSO is C-23d and refers to drop test standards contained in AS8015b which defines the major parachute components that can be TSO'd. There is no provision in 8015b to have any type of connector links "TSO'd" unless the links are included in a canopy assembly (see number 3 below). The Precision r-Max reserve was certified under C-23d using "Wrap-It Links" during certification drop testing, and presumably some of the PD reserves were approved using the reserve style Slinks. Average breaking strength compared: PD ReserveSlinks= 3600 lbs Precision Wrap-It Links= 4028 lbs The "TSOable" components of a parachute assembly are: 1) Deployment initiation device (pilot chute, drogue, or functional equivalent); bridle, if applicable 2) Deployment control device (sleeve, bag, diaper, or functional equivalent), if used 3) Canopy(s) (includes suspension lines, connector links if used, and reefing device, if used) 4) Riser(s), if used, when not integral with harness and/or canopy 5) Stowage container 6) Harness(es) 7) Primary actuation device (ripcord or functional equivalent, including reserve static line, if used) George Galloway

In anticipation of the ash dive for Lee on Sunday Jan 20th, I stayed up late putting the finishing touches on a new ashbag design. In October 2004 I made an ashbag for my old friend and longtime co-worker Chris Martin. After deploying Chris' ashes, Beezy Shaw (1st jump with me same load 1972 and co-worker for more than 20 years) suggested that I try to vent the next ashbag a little better than Chris'. Little could I imagine that the next ashbag I would make would be for Beezy himself in October 2007. While Beezy's ash deployment went well, there were still some considerations and improvements to be made for future ashbags. Now, my ashbag for Skinnyshrek is by far the best design yet. I really didn't know I was destined to be an ashbag designer (or in Lee's case, an ash-pod designer) but an incredible amount of love, thought, and innovation has gone into the development of the perfect launching pad for our friends' final exits into the wild blue yonder. Blue Skies Skinny'. As it turns out (weather), we'll do it later in the year. George Galloway MPR SBC 2666652 TRS

Who are these Southern skydivers? 1970's

The guy with the black/red poptop in the back row on Bob Wilson's right is Tom Rambo. Chalfant, I can't believe you didn't get that... or did you? gg Never Mind... Quippenschene -
Don't be so naive. We built the first 1000 Icarus canopies and produced 100% of the original Icarus marketing program. All Icarus canopies were psycho-packed from the get-go, including the Fx, Vx, Safire, Crossfire, Tandem and Omega. I personally developed the psycho-pack before Icarus was even on the map outside of New Zealand. (see the article in Parachutist magazine December 1995) Anybody that leads you to believe any different is ill-informed or ill-willed. Whatever reason Icarus has for not recommending the psychopack has nothing to do with parachutes, only politics. George Galloway Precision Aerodynamics

Precision does not use a straight stitch on HMA. It might look like a straight stitch, but it is a zigzag. It is imperative that you use a zig-zag stitch to prevent thread breakage. The zig-zag doesn't have to be much, but a straight stitch will definitely break on fingertrapped HMA. We use a new needle with every HMA lineset. George Galloway Precision Aerodynamics

There was a DZ in Humboldt TN... early 1970's... most of the jumpers later moved over to Covington TN with a small door Beech 18 as I recall. I first jumped there in December 1973... The guy who ran Covington was named Ron Blanchard. I think the DZ closed when the DZO went-in with a main-reserve entanglement. The old Humboldt Hummers might have included such jumpers as Greg "Long Death" Giles, and Ron "Dad" Carter, and perhaps Ray Hara started there before he later moved on to Birmingham where he started making the "Added Attraction", a modification that turned a 5 cell StratoStar into a higher performing 7 cell. Oh now, my brain cell is starting to hurt. I have to stop thinking. George Galloway

The Nitro canopies that Precision had at WFFC '02 were made in Korea (airfoils only). At that time, the fabric was from Gelvenor in South Africa. I assume that Beezy is referring to Korea not Germany when he says "the Nitro remains as it always has been, manufactured where it always was." George Galloway

It wasn't too long ago that one of my good customers sent a page from Para Gear catalog to his insurance company to document the cost of a cutaway main canopy, and the insurance company (State Farm) sent us a check for the retail amount to replace the cutaway canopy. George Galloway

GPS Tracking Freefall & Canopy Flight over Google Earth
precision replied to Muffy's topic in Gear and Rigging
The flight tracking was logged using a Flytec 5030 and then overlaid onto Google Earth via a function in the Flytec software. This unit is extremely sensitive, and in addition to GPS tracking data, it also has a direct input pitot system to measure indcated (and compute true) airspeed. The sections of the flight where the data is jumpy was due to movement inside the C-185 prior to exit, where the 5030 couldn't "see" out the window of the airplane as Beezy was getting ready to climb out. I don't have any squirrels in my yard, or even in my neighborhood for that matter. None of my friends have squirrels (or bunnies) in their yards either. I have an all natural cure for squirrel and rabbit infestation. No traps, no chemicals, no poisons, just pure clean naturally awesome flying predation. I have seen squirrels bail from the top of a 50 ft tall tree and hit the ground running. I have also seen them get nailed in freefall about halfway to the ground. These kids are the original skydivers. This is my other passion. http://precision.aero/buteo.htm[url] George Galloway

Precision was the first parachute company to offer specific canopy models in multiple scaled sizes tuned to wing loading (that was 25 years ago). Before that, most all canopies were available in one specific size. If you wanted a larger canopy, you could buy a different design. Since that time, most other parachute companies have followed that lead with their own brands. The closest thing to scaled sizes in canopies of the early days were the PC and the Jumbo PC, or the Para-Plane and the Baby Plane. Precision scales all Xaos caniopies to a specific size and wing-loading. Even 2 or 3 square feet in size variation will return a measurable difference in extractable performance in the Xaos design. Most (as in high 90% range) of our customers order custom sizing, and yes, Aaron Comp did add 1/2 square feet to his canopy and it was manufactured exactly as he ordered it. Every canopy is made-to-order. We offer the Xaos canopy in Para-Gear catalog in several specific square foot increments to give the buyer a big picture comparison of what they can expect for a given point in the performance spectrum. Would you order a specific brand shoes if they were only avalable in S, M, L, XL sizes? (Well, I guess some people would, if they had the right kind of swoosh on the side. After all, it's all about other people's perception, right?) George Galloway
