  1. Councilman' slap chute was seen by Jerry Baumchen and all the FAA paperwork is legal, since Mr. Baumchen has held FAA approval to build parachutes for more than 30 years. I have also seen a couple of lap-type chutes, but do not need gov't approval since I live in Canada. My lap-types are based on Jerry's designs, but the harness is easier to don. Jerry's designs are based I. Military patterns from the 1930s. There has been no significant lap production since the 1930s. However, there is a limited modern demand for laps by test-pilots flying the first few hours in kit planes that have tight cockpits, side-mounted control sticks, etc. That old photograph looks like it dates from the 1920s and it looks like the guy is wearing a regular SEAT type PEP backwards. Hint: there is no visible hardware to allow him to release the chest strap(s) after landing. Another hint is the coiled metal ripcord housing sticking out the right side of the container. Traditionally, PEP ripcords are mounted on the left side or centre of the chest. Back and seat type PEPs have ripcord pockets on the left side of the chest. Chest or lap type PEPs may have centre-pull ripcords. No ripcord handle is visible in this photo.
  2. Moderators, Please move this to the tandem forum
  3. I just packed a pair of Micro Sigmas. The old loops were about 5.5 inches long from the Cypres washer. Regular sized Sigmas can be packed with 4.5 inch loops if you are very careful to push canopy fabric away from the center.
  4. Deployment bags are supplied by container manufacturers (as per Parachute Industry Technical Standard 102). What type of container do you have? What size of container do you have?
  5. Pre-stretched means "stretched before installation" in common usage.
  6. For Vectors and Talons, I measure 4.5 inches from the Cypres washer.
  7. Ribs heal slowly. I suffered bruised ribs and sternum during a plane crash. Pain in my ribs made it difficult to sleep for six months after the accident. Meanwhile I rehabilitated with push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups and stretches. I have done 400 jumps since the accident. Now 6 years after the accident, I am working on rehabilitating my knee injuries.
  8. Five months after tibia surgery, I can walk without pain most days, but twisting my knee or running still hurts. I go to the gym three times per week to work on rehabilitating weak leg muscles. The surgeon warned me not to run or hop for the first six months after surgery. If the bones a re-aligned correctly, you should be able to return to all previous sports.
  9. Good point about cardio fitness. While skydiving does not involve long-distance running (unless you are a really bad spotter) cardio fitness does improve performance in two key areas: high-altitude and endurance.
  10. Hee! Hee! That's like a tandem student complaining that "leg straps are too tight" immediately after opening. Try explaining that all their weight is resting on those those leg straps! Hee! Hee! Seriously, you will only get a accurate answer when you wear the harness in front of a. Master Rigger.
  11. Hi Peter, Are you dealing with army officers or Air Force officers? Army officers are used to making life-and-death decisions with only half the facts. OTOH Air Force technicians are expected to do repairs by-the-book, as in "I repaired this parachute in accordance with manual ABC, page 92, paragraph 4, etc."
  12. ..................................................................................... Probably won't kill you, but it is not packed according to the Voodoo manual. The Voodoo manual says to close the right side flap (including cutter), then close the left side flap, so that the AAD cutter is completely concealed in the finished pack job. Now is a good time get your reserve repacked because you don't know what other parts of the Voodoo manual the last rigger ignored. When you take it to a rigger, ask if they have a copy of the Voodoo manual. If they don't, then take it to another rigger who does have a Voodoo manual. Good riggers pack with a open (paper or lap top computer) of the manual open beside them. iPhone screens are too small to see the finer points of bridle folding, etc.
  13. Granted, most early tapered canopies (BT 80, Stiletto, etc.) had constant-chord centre-sections and only tapered outer cells. Circa 1988, I flew a tapered para-glider with Jean Bouchard. How much taper did Tony Uragallo or Brian Germaine put in their early canopies?
  14. ....................................................................................... When?
  15. Spinach. Popeye the sailor ate spinach to make him strong. But my mom always told me that spinach tasted too strong for kids, so I didn't get to taste raw spinach until I was 30 years old. Yes, spinach has a strong flavour, but as strong as kale. These days I eat spinach once or twice a week and enjoy it.
  16. What is the Federation Francais du Parachutisme's attitude towards wind turbines?
  17. 9 inches x 11 inches x 21 inches.
  18. What is the Australian Parachute Federation's policy on wind turbines?
  19. Why do Christians insist on insinuating themselves in the Muslim civil war? This civil war pits Sunni Muslims against Shia Muslims. It has been raging for more than a thousand years. Why do non-Muslims meddle?
  20. What is USPA policy on wind turbines? How close is too close to a DZ? How tall is too tall? How large a wind turbine farm is too many? I have jumped at Byron and California City where wind turbine farms are just part of the scenery in the distance. Let's limit this discussions to direct threats to skydivers and jump planes.
  21. Unless it's a Diablo. .............................................................................. Agreed! I had to cutaway a Diablo 135 after it spun up. That Diablo 135 was the only 7-cell that I had to cutaway. Even my Stiletto 135 didn't spin that bad. Even with the tired (more than one thousand jumps) original suspension lines, my Stiletto never spun bad enough for me cutaway.
  22. The atmosphere was only cool enough and moist enough to condense at opening altitude. This is easier to see in summertime when the base of cumulus clouds is near 3,000 feet above ground level.
