Safire II recovery arc at 1.4-1.45
obadz replied to BlindBrick's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
That's an interesting development of your original post which I had read and considered a relevant input in my decision to purchase the Safire2 (just to be clear, I'm not holding you responsible for my disappointment in any way, I just had assumed that the behavior @ 1.8 wouldn't be so radically different from that @ 1.4. I was wrong..) I'm not willing to increase my w/l at this point (other than by eating ice cream), but I'm seriously considering switching to an xf2. Can anyone comment on the riser pressure & recovery arc of the xf2 @ 1.4 w/l? -

Safire II recovery arc at 1.4-1.45
obadz replied to BlindBrick's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
(Reviving this thread) I'm currently flying a Safire2 149 @ 1.4 and even on 90deg turns the riser pressure builds up quickly and when I can no longer hold them down the canopy starts climbing (I felt it, people on the ground confirmed it).. Then it loses speed and goes back into full flight again. Feels like the recovery arc is shorter than a 1-size larger Sabre2. Will check my brake lines but I also feel like there was enough slack (certainly when I'm not pulling down on risers there's plenty of slack). Did it solve the problem for you? Any other Safire flyers care to chime in? -
Shared rides to Skydive LI or Ranch from nyc?
obadz replied to Hazarrd's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Did you not get my response the last time you asked? http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3209451;page=unread#unread -
lol indeed. Is that so? Do you have anything to back yet another blanket statement? Fascinating. Wrong again. I'm no expert in American law but I'm pretty sure freedom of speech applies to every citizen whether they've served or not. So guess what, you can give your opinion, you can even give it without backing it up with any facts so long as you remain clear of slander. But thanks (in part) to you, the rest of us still have the freedom to call the bullshit. Now if you care to give some first-hand facts to back your negative statements regarding the Ranch, we're all ears. Yes, what a grown-up. I'm in awe in front of so much wisdom & emotional maturity.

Luigi is giving a course at Sky's the Limit (E. Stroudsburg, PA) on June 7th & 8th: http://skydive.skysthelimit.net/experienced/events.htm

Well your response sounds "less than intelligent" probably because you didn't bother to look up words you did not understand (and maybe for other reasons too.. but I won't go there). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_%28Internet%29 Anyways, I'm not convinced we have a troll on our hands anymore, so I don't know whether to be excited or bored.. Time will tell.

I have. And the altimeter is consistently wrong!

We have a mailing list in place to organize carpooling from the city to the Ranch, Sky's the Limit, occasionally Cross Keys and SDLI, and hopefully soon Skydive Sussex. On a nice weekend day, there's generally 2 to 4 cars going to DZs . Once in a blue moon someone will do a roundtrip on a week day. You can subscribe at http://skyflyers.org/wws/subscribe/nyc if interested.

Is the otter still in Sebastian? If so, for how long?

Calculating your optimal wingloading
obadz replied to Chris-Ottawa's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
You are right that a 60 sq ft loaded at 2.4 is not exactly the same as a 100 sq ft loaded at 2.4, but not for the reason invoked. You first say that the 100 sq ft has more surface area and therefore will generate more lift. But as you yourself point out in your second post, the payload isn't the same, so the 60 sq ft needs less lift to keep the jumper afloat. They don't behave identically for reasons that are explained here: http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/wingload.pdf I once read somewhere on this forum that optimal wing sizes for swooping were in the order of 100 to 110 sq ft and a wingloading was also mentioned but I don't recall what it was. Light jumpers were supposed to carry lead to achieve that wingloading. I have no idea regarding the validity of that statement. From a pure physics perspective, a swoop is difficult to optimize as you fly at many different attitudes and speeds. I submit however that the optimal glide performance of a given canopy is unaffected by suspended weight. To clarify: same canopy, same jumper (for drag), add/remove an arbitrary amount of lead; the jumper will cover the same distance over ground given 1000ft of altitude in the no-wind case if he trims his canopy optimally in each case (assuming we stay within a reasonable range where the trimming with risers does not significantly distort the wing) Although it is unrelated to swooping, I find this to be an interesting fact. -
I'm gonna try the demo if Sonic still has it

I like practicing one handed flares & turns for that eventuality (both toggles in one hand..)

Any words on the lift capacity?
-
Cute idea but since you're trying to measure is the angle between apparent gravity and true gravity, you need both your device (whichs gives you apparent gravity) and also a way to measure where true gravity is pointing. The latter is what's hard to obtain as the entire system (parachute / container / jumper) is moving. I vote for the photo cells

Something tells me we'll soon have a swoop course with retro-reflective photoelectric sensors on each gate at the Ranch. Just make sure you bury the wires deep enough so the swoopers don't trip on them BTW, is that what they use for measuring speed in competitions?

The Ranch should be open on sunny, not super-cold, weekend days. I don't know about other DZs. Always best to call & check before going there..
