Flight School - A first year of BASE jumping
Butters replied to mccordia's topic in Wing Suit Flying
There's definitely a growing number of climbers taking interest in B.A.S.E. jumping. If that is "the work" then I've done enough "work" to retire. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch -
Hmm ... if that works, I do have something to learn. So, should I give back what I've been given. Hmm ... move over, the eggs are cracking and the fledglings are about to take over the nest. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

I wonder if that was the dealer for some of the older guys on here? "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

Get the Wii Fit and then buy Shaun White Snowboarding (played) or Skate It (haven't played). I'm sure a 13 year old boy would like those ... "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

That's exactly the value of freeflying before wingsuiting in my eyes. It gets you used to instability, recovering from it and generally to being other-than-belly-to-earth. Now the information is coming out. So you would recommend doing some freefly to practice instability (not to become proficient at freeflying). So we have: 1] Relative work - practice docking, diving, and flying relative to others. 2] Tracking - practice heading, body positions, and flying relative to others. 3] Freeflying - practice instability. 4] Deployment - practice wingsuit deployment sequence. 5] ... Thanks for the reply. Would you recommend someone focus more on atmonauti and tracking verse relative work? What about freeflying? PS: I wouldn't consider my canopy to be fast. I've had tandems flash me to move over into the slow lane. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

I'll accept that those with more experience believe 200 jumps is an acceptable minimum but ... i agree 100% its the best skill to have to become a great/relaxed/aware wings suit pilot. ... there are things that someone can do to be better prepared (for when they have the 200 jumps or more). So what specific things would you advise someone to work on? "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

I've got a good list of skills for you. 1) Fly your body in freefall 200 times. 2) Deploy, fly, and land your canopy 200 times. Flying a wingsuit is easy, and the most important part of any skydive (especially your first wingsuit jumps) is the canopy ride. It appears that all we have is an objective number (200) and a subjective word (experienced). If someone asked you what they could do to be better prepared, what would you tell them to do? You can think whatever you want. My point is that you (and others) continue to mention the magic number and experience without mentioning what experience you are referring to (other than the magic number) or things to do to gain that experience. I'm trying to move away from a magic number and towards a list of skills that someone should be proficient at before wingsuiting. A list someone could "work" on ... "That looks dangerous." You're referring to Jarno's words. It was pretty clear he meant "do 200 jumps first." So that's it, 200 jumps (doesn't matter what type of jumps), that's "the work" that if someone does they'll be ready to wingsuit. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

I continue to hear "put in the work" but no one has defined what "the work" is. So, what is "the work"? "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

You're right, 150 jumps is not a lot. However, I was prepared enough to take the next step and don a wingsuit. Are you suggesting that I didn't work for it? How many people have you given first flight courses to that worked less than me. I didn't work for it, sure, whatever you say. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

Wingsuiting is a new discipline and thus there is going to be constant back and forth on the major issues: when is someone ready, what constitutes a formation, etc... I'll try to stop killing threads over it. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

The real reason for the awesome rebellious attitude. Seeing someone with that same low experience hit another wingsuit flyer so hard arms snap off and nearly break legs changes your views on that one... What do you consider low experience? I had ~150 tracking dives (practicing acrobatics and back-tracking along with exiting, pattern, and deployment as if in a wingsuit) before donning a wingsuit. yea..so was the flyer who hit my buddy.. The 'killin it' comment was a joke. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

I started early (but not way to early) and I doubt those that know me would say that I didn't invest in what I wanted. The real reason for the awesome rebellious attitude. I have been 'killin it'. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

And what's so bad about my question? The question isn't bad. What's bad is that you continue to argue with experienced individuals (and believe you're right) when you lack basic knowledge. Did you even attempt to answer your own question before asking others? I doubt it, no break for you ... "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

If I were you I would read more and type less. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

Nice suit. Don't listen to them about matching, they're just jealous of us that know how to match. Hope you enjoy your Phantom II as much as I'm enjoying mine. "That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
