  1. I think he's refering to the floating iris, which was common (and still is, I think....) on the low-end 3CCD devices, but not on the more expensive vx series. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  2. Just for the record, according to Ski Magazine, as example: a popular speed skiing course maxes out at 52 degrees, but averages only 45. Typical "black diamond" are less than 40. Of course, these runs are rarely straight, and never flat. http://www.skimag.com/skimag/travel/article/0,12795,365362,00.html _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  3. Consider a jet on approach to O'hare. The runway is level and flat. You could say that it has a pitch of zero degrees. An heavy DC11 is on approach. It's descending on a 5 degree slope. At touchdown, the DC9 "colides" with the runway at a 5 degree angle. The landing gear easily absorb the shock, and the captain taxi's whats left of the airplane back to the loading gate. Now consider a wingsuit flyer. The jumper spends 10 million bucks to build a flat and stright ski slope with a constant pitch of 45 degrees. The wingsuit flyer is on approach to the hill, doing his best to match the slope. However, since he's tired, the best he can do is a pitch of 40 degrees. At touchdown, the wingsuit flyer "colides" with the hill at a 5 degree angle. Rescuers attempt to find his head. Whether it's 40 vs. 45, or 0 vs. 5, the force of impact is exactly the same. The difference in the gravity vectors is irrelevant, because it's energy is relatively insignificant compared to that of the jumpers kinetic energy at 40 degrees. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  4. Because I'm not ready to book yet. I don't really care which has some time available in the periods I'm looking for, because I can't commit. I am curious which one we'll have better odds at. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  5. On one hand, I agree. A lot of people are virulently opposed acts they would eagerly participate in when it involves heterosexuality, rather than homo. On the other hand, this specific act was targetted against a child, which changes everything. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  6. Because I'm sceptical of claims from salespeople. Allow me to rephrase. How dificult have people found it to find time at the different tunnels? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  7. One solution I saw recently was a guy selling his micrometer velocity, he required all buyers to submit pics of them under another uber small canopy. It filtered the chaff effectively. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  8. Yo Marc! 9 years t'ill yer 40! _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  9. Craichead and myself are thinking of flying to either Orlando or Perris sometime between April 13th and 25th, but we won't be able to confirm anything for a few weeks. Which site has better availability? Anyone know when Eloy is going to open? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  10. There are far better solutions to saving your ass when deep in the corner. Popping your reserve will undoubtedly make things worse. To answer your question, yes. Depending on available altitude, the forward speed would likely open your reserve, and you'd have just induced a "two-out" malfunction at a very low altitude, with very little room to deal with it. People do die from down-planes. Canopy coaching is an excellent thing, and I urge you to get some throughout your jumping career, especially if you're starting to think about high performance landings. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  11. Oddly, my parents who had knee and hip replacements do set off metal detectors. Perhaps someone who knows more than I do can explain why different metals are used? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  12. Any updates? I figure by now you should know why he was delayed....? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  13. That's surprising. I haven't seen any airport security in America that even comes close to what I witnessed in Switzerland. Since your co-worker is being held up on arrival, it sounds like he's being held up by customs/immigration, rather than airport security...? Why is he being held up? __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  16. I've seen Loic's hill swoop. Actually, I think that's a great example of the dificulty of the stunt. It also gives a practical indication of the speeds involved. Note that the hill was bumpy, and of varying pitch. What's being discussed here is an order of magnitude more dificult. The problem with landing a wingsuit on a hill is clearly not just getting close, it's touch-down and managing the "landing roll slide". I'm doubtful that a perfectly flat, perfectly straight hill of sufficient length currently exists. I presume building one is outside the budget constraints. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  17. A completely different thread, but I think the time is coming for a dedicated DC circuit in homes. If I were to count all the "wall hog" transformers I've got currently plugged in, I'm pretty sure I'd have close to 30. If I add in the small appliances that have integrated transformers, I bet I'm close to 50 - and I've only got a small condo. I can't realistically t roll my own because every device wants a different voltage. At the very least, there should be a standard for small DC electronics. Once manufacturers follow a standard then there'll be a market for homebuilders/remodellers. To get things back on track, does it really make sense to have a Solar Panel creating DC, converting it to AC until the outlet, only to plug in a wall-hog transformer to power all your electonics? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  18. It's a fantastic show, craichead and I took my parents a few weeks ago. It's currently showing at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. We saw many kids there, who all seemed to enjoy it. We were not grossed out. We found the subject very approachable. We were fascinated and intrigued. We both leared a lot. One would be foolish to avoid it on grounds of "gross". It's amazing. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  19. Group lessons are a great way to spend a ski vacation. Learning how to ski is surprisingly easy, if you have good, quality instruction. Do NOT allow a friend to teach you skiing, unless they're actual instructors. When I was teaching, I could literally have anybody skiing confidently and safely by noon of the first day. Group lessons are great for kids, but you'd progress faster on your own with a private lesson. Having the kids in a group of their own skill level will mean that you won't be held back by their abilities - or vice-versa. Enjoy the family time "off the hill". _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  20. The symptoms fit. Borrow a different lens and see what happens. Rebel-G, or Rebel-G II? I had suspected the problem only existed with the newer "II" line of cameras....? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  21. Unlikely, at least in the immediate future. Last week Nokia dropped all research projects related to fuel-cell powered cellphones. http://www.technewsworld.com/story/tech/nokia-fuel-cell-41105.html If Nokia can't power a cellphone, I think it unlikely that they'll figure out how to power a laptop. Fuel cells continue to pose production issues. A great concept, it is proving prohibitively expensive to implement. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  22. Closing flaps, and closing loops. There are way too many jumpers (especially at hinckley) who reguarly jump gear where the closing flap opens in freefall. JS's gear is especially bad. Open closing flaps will ensure off-center video. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  23. What lens are you using? I had problems with a Rebel G-II and older Sigma lenses. It works fine with Canon and newer Sigma lenses. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  24. General concensus for 3 monthes is certainly NOT to unpack it. General concensus for well over a year is to unpack it, fold it, and store in a mesh bag. Reserves reguarly stay packed for well over 4 monthes, 6 monthes in many countries. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  25. The last year has seen a record increase in the number of acquisitions in the oil industry. See here for example. In the 80's, we saw a rash of acquisitions in the oil industry, the point then was to gain greater effeciencies through colosolidation. That's NOT what's going on now. Companies with cash reserves enriched by the high oil prices are going on shopping sprees, buying up "reserves". Companies like Chevron Texaco are seeing their future supplies dwindling, so they're buying up smaller companies that DO have the assets. That in itself is an excellent predictor of future oil prices. Since oil companies are paying a premium for the rights to drill the oil, we can certainly bet that they won't be selling that oil cheaply. The oil who's rights are being purchased will be sold very expensively.... Because the rights themselves are expensive. Not a good sign for those who like to drive SUV's. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
