I mounted mine ontop. I had Bonehead make me an expanded top-plate so I can mount my SLR and DBox-ed PC120 side by side. pics here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_attachment;postatt_id=45844;. I prefered that to front-mounting because I like the weight centered farther back. Also, it frees up the front mount to put an inverted flash. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

How do you clear your airspace at deployment time? A recent incident has stirred some controversy. What do you do at the end of the skydive to avoid a deployment colision? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I've done serious damage to tent fabric with deet. Like parachutes, tent fabric is also usually made from SolarMax, although with a different thread count and finished differently. I supose the damage I did to my tent could have been related to the differnt finishing techniques... I'd be very hesitant to allow it anywhere near my canopy. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

If you're trying to learn swooping, then a Spectre - no matter what size - is not a great option. Downsizing will not make your swoops any better - it'll just make it hurt more when you screw it up. There are plenty of good canopies out on the market that swoop well at light wingloadings. Try a Sabre 2, Aerodyne Pilot, Icarus Safire 2, or a Big Air Lotus. All will swoop nicely, a 170 will give you a good wingloading with some really fun performance. Learning to swoop with a Spectre is like learning to race with a school bus. It's a great canopy, but swooping is not what it does well. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Are Gas Prices Affecting Your Jumping Activities?
AndyMan replied to linc_harris's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Nope. I get 25 MPG in my Honda SUV, so the 120 mile trip to the DZ and back only burns 5 gallons of gas. Those 5 gallons now cost me $15, where it used to cost me $10. I can afford the $5. I'm insulated against jump ticket increases too, since my DZ offered the opportunity to "lock in" at the start of the season by buying a 100 jump package. I don't drive to work, so I don't have a huge daily gas expense. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
How about RSS feeds of the forum topics?
AndyMan replied to KidWicked's topic in Suggestions and Feedback
RSS wasn't designed for, nor does it really work very well with forums. It does work really well for news stories, which is what it was designed for. It would be neat to see RSS for the topics on the home page, but I suspect that most people are thinking forums when they ask for it. I suspect that's a pipe-dream. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -

How long does it take your tandem customers to receive their DVD?
AndyMan replied to docjohn's topic in Photography and Video
At Chicagoland, the first tandem is getting their DVD about 7 minutes after they land. The second gets his 7 minutes later, and the third - yup, about 7 minutes after the second. It's not a conincidence that the custom part of most of the videos are about 5 minutes long. This goes on the DVD after a pre-burnt stock leader. Non-linear editing is key to a fast operation. Having a good mixing board is key to non-stop linear editing. A good mixing board can capture stills and short video and fade those back in later. A good cameraman can do most of his editing as he shoots the video, that only leaves using a combination of the board and the playback camera to do real-time effects, like the camera slow-motion, and the mixing board for putting up stills and titles. With this system the problem comes when there's more than 3 video tandems on each load, and the planes are flying back-to-back. With more than 3 videos on each load you max out the capacity of the editing station and get backed up. That's when a second editing station comes in handy. Chicagoland often does 70-80 tandems on a Saturday, so there isn't much of an alternative. Chicagoland is still a "small" DZ, flying only a single turbine. Spending an hour on each video would take two full time workers a whole week, just to get through the volume of one saturday. That's not an option. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
Big Air Sportz canopies and rib color limitation
AndyMan replied to shall555's topic in Gear and Rigging
No. "Signature" canopies are made by Brian himself. He prefers not to do make canopies in the summer, when he does most of his traveling. Most of his "Signature" canopies get made in the winter. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
The biggest problem is the huge amount of sugar. The sugar free one tastes just as good I like the B vitamin for its hangover busting effect. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

What can we do about Skyride?
AndyMan replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
An interesting thought, but there are always people who will lease aircraft to them. If Larry does this, kudos to him for sticking to his princinples, but there's more than enough aircraft in the ASC family to keep skyride flying for a long time. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -

I'm more than happy with my custom built $300 PC. It's more than powerful than anything I'll need, including video editing with Premiere. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

1: The registration fee. I actually found myself driving up I-57 passing by Rantoul, and thought of stopping in for the day. I kept driving when I realised it would cost me and my wife $140 just to get by the front gate. 2: A history of over promising and under delivering. I knew at least one of the promised aircraft wouldn't show. I was right. 3: I can jump an otter at my home DZ. I don't need to travel to do that. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

My post had two options. Either Dad should butt out, or Junior should not be jumping. Either Junior is mature enough to be responsible for himself, or he's not. My point, I question how someone who requires parental supervision has the maturity to be skydiving. Skydiving isn't for kids. You're probably right - jumping at a different DZ than Dad is probably a good idea. That way he CAN be responsible for his own safety, without his Dad questioning his every jump. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
-
Any kid who's old enough to be able to jump from an airplane is old enough to take responsibility for their own safety. If he's not old enough to take responsibility for his own safety, then he should NOT be skydiving. Since Dad let him skydive, Dad must think he's responsible enough to do it himself. Dad should butt out. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I put 10 jumps on a Vengence before I got my Samurai - both the same size. The fact that they both have airlocks is almost meaningless - they have very little in common. The characteristics I saw of the Vengence were: Wild openings Rapid response to toggle changes, ie twitchy Very poor glide ratio - I always had trouble getting back. Soft front riser preasure Contrary to the Samurai: Soft, on-heading openings. Toggles are softer on the top half, you need to go deeper to get sharp turns. Definately not twitchy. Excellent glide ratio - I always get back with plenty of altitude. also soft riser preasure _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I've never met a CRW jumper who's willing to do CRW jumps without hook-knives. I don't think that's any indication they need to reevalute doing CRW. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
-
I used to jump in sandals because I thought it was cool. For some reason I thought feeling the air in my toes was a good thing. A few fast landings taught me that good foot protection is critical. I can not imagine ever not wearing shoes, given that I load my canopy near 1.9. Even normal landings would hurt barefoot. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
-
I disagree. I make sure to bring at least two hook-knives on a CRW jump, or when I have my camera helmet on. I've sometimes forget my hook-knives on other jumps. There's absolutely nothing wrong with targetting safety equipment to the specific risks of the jump. A Raft jump requires an AAD no more than a camera jump requires a hook-knife. It's still smart, in both cases. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Wearing appropriate safety gear is never stupid. Leaving safety gear on the ground when its likely you might need it is. Leaving safety gear on the ground when it's unlikely you'll need it is not. Wear appropriate safety gear on every skydive. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
