Skydive San Francisco Information
daremrc replied to skydivelaw's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No, not for a reward. for a reward that may be available. I bet the guy paying the reward is also responsible for determining if it is verifiable or usable. You'll probably need to provide your own lawyer to collect on it Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement. -
Wow... I've considered going to two audibles when I decide to start freeflying, but always thought of using them set to the same altitudes.. I may have to give that a shot when I finally go to two Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.

How far do you drive to the DZ each weekend??
daremrc replied to partyboy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
about 75 miles each way, but I usually take my camper van so it's out on Friday night & back on Sunday night. Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement. -
I had a pre-existing condition when I started jumping. I thought it was going to be fine, but the belly-to-earth arch position puts the shoulder in a compromised position to start. Once you have any type of dislocation, you've affected the function of your shoulder, by either stretching or tearing any of the soft tissue that makes it all work. Long story short, I had a dislocation on my very first solo freefall. I finally got the surgery and the physical therapy required to re-tension the joint and I am now able to jump, albeit with less range-of-motion than I had before. I would *highly* recommend to anyone that has ever experienced a dislocation to see a specialist who will test the strength and stability of the joint. Before I had my surgery, I used to think my shoulder was 90% stable. The specialist knew exactly how to manipulate my arm to demonstrate the instability and within 5 minutes was prescribing an MRI. I had my surgery in November of 2006 and was in the air by May, so it's not the end of the world. Also, I found that my time in the tunnel was much tougher on my shoulder than actual skydiving, and I didn't get to a tunnel until I was 14 months post-op. There were a couple times in the tunnel that i took a funny bounce off the next and deflected most of it with my bad arm. I'm glad I didn't try it any sooner. of course everyones injury is going to be different so the best thing to do is see a doctor... High WLs, Low Experience.. Where Are the S&TAs?
daremrc replied to MagicGuy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Maybe a BSR is the answer. I fail to see what anyone has to lose by limiting wingloading based on license class or number of jumps. If you really want to fly that shit-hot canopy, I guess that just means you will commit yourself more towards being in the sport for a while... High WLs, Low Experience.. Where Are the S&TAs?
daremrc replied to MagicGuy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
...except no one is talking about banning anything, only setting a required minimum experience level. I am undecided on weather or not a BSR is the answer, I'm just glad that I am comfortable with the amount of leeway people are and are not given at the place that I jump at the most. It makes me wonder, tho, when I read these forums who or what I might encounter when I travel... Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement. -
High WLs, Low Experience.. Where Are the S&TAs?
daremrc replied to MagicGuy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
How about individual progression applied towards other things than skydiving? I mean, I'm sure there's some kids out there driving on permits that could handle a high-displacement motorcycle. Who are we to hold them back from developing their skills at a younger age?Or how about doctors? There's some great minds in medical school today, let's let them skip the hoops and show the world their real, true potential. My point is: Why do we need numbers and injuries/deaths to prove something is a bad idea? When you take a concept that has a potential, unproven upside but no downside, why not? Isn't that what things like helmets and seatbelts are about? my questions aren't directly aimed at the last poster, that was just the closest 'reply' button... High WLs, Low Experience.. Where Are the S&TAs?
daremrc replied to MagicGuy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This "I have the right to be as risky as I like" argument holds no water, unless you jump at a dropzone that allows only solo jumps on individual passes. Even then, there is the potential to hurt people on the ground. In a vacuum, I understand your philosophy. In the real world, it just doesn't work. daremrc replied to MagicGuy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Uh yeah. I'm one of those special interest parties. You and I, we share the same home state. Hopefully we won't have to share the same airspace, as my special interest at this point is to stay in this sport as long as possible without getting a limp, prosthesis, or funeral out of the deal. Fastest way to fall on Belly?
daremrc replied to tripleflip18's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You're going to need to train for this. All great athletes do. I would start with a steady diet of Big Macs, beer, and Pop Tarts... Let me know how that goes for you and we'll re evaluate in 3 months Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement. -
They were not thrilled. Then, after my tandem, I decided to pursue Static Line, and they were really not thrilled. They did not understand it and it took about a year to get them to actually come spend a day at the dropzone and see what was going on there. Then they got to meet my instructors, coaches and friends. They got to watch people land all day, and we barbecued. I think I only made 2 jumps all day because I was spending time explaining things and just hanging out with them. They got in the car to leave just as a caravan load opened above us, and my dad hurried my mom & sister back out of the car so they could watch yet another load come down

No-hoopla on mine, just a hop & pop. One of my coaches got on the 182 with one of her students & I said "Welcome to my 100th jump". She looked at me funny and said "Hey, we usually celebrate things like that!" I told her how the next two Caravan loads were already full and I wanted to jump! She understood. Screw it, I'll celebrate at 1000

Off student status now...Should I buy a freefly suit?
daremrc replied to regulator's topic in Gear and Rigging
Hmmm. I didn't really think I wanted to do much belly flying, but, it turns out it's a lot harder than it looks. At least to do it well. It's likely my freefly suit will be worn and ready for replacement before I try to do any serious freeflying. Jumping Solo gets old, fast. You might find that doing belly jumps will allow you to be in the air with more people, faster than pursuing freefly will. This means more experienced people with their eyes on you in freefall to coach you & correct bad habits. It also means lots of fun that you get to share with your new friends. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but most beginner-to-intermediate freeflyers do lots and lots of solos followed by 2-ways with people who know how to fly defensively enough to get out of the way if something wild and crazy happens, don't they? Off student status now...Should I buy a freefly suit?
daremrc replied to regulator's topic in Gear and Rigging
I was in your position one year ago, and I regret buying a freefly suit first. I'm still learning to fly with a reasonable degree of accuracy on my belly, and having a suit with grippers would've saved me a few bruises on the arm where people thought they were gripping my suit. I suppose if someone thought they wanted to go straight to freeflying... but to me that makes no sense. My philosophy is I do want to try freeflying, but I want to be at least competent on my belly first. It seems to me that some things you learn on your belly will transfer to freefly.. But I've only got 5 or 6 "free-flail" solo's under my belt so my perspective is obviously a bit biased. Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement. -
hahahah I had an instructor who said "So do you have a girlfriend? Well when you arch I want you to think about her. just go ahead and stick your junk out there" One day, if I ever become an instructor, I promise to impart those words of wisdom... WFFC asking -- would you go to WFFC 2008?
daremrc replied to chango's topic in Events & Places to Jump
I started skydiving in Fall of '06, so I have never had the opportunity to attend a convention. I will definately be there if it is happening. If you build it, they will come. Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement. -
someone please correct me if I'm wrong but this is how I understand it... You lose approximately 1000 ft of altitude in a minute under canopy, this may be different for you depending on what you fly but we'll use it for simplicity's sake here. then you take your winds aloft and average both the heading and speed. for example, If I come up with an average heading of 180 and an average speed of 30 MPH, I know that I will travel about a mile north for every 2000 feet or two minutes of canopy time. If I'm open at 12k, I can open approximately 6 miles south of the DZ and expect to be relatively close to my landing area when I get down to ground level. Of course you want to plan both to keep an eye on the DZ, and potentially land out because the winds aloft forecasts are just that - forecasts. I wouldn't plan such a jump without approval of the dropzone and the guidance of someone who's successfully done one before.. While I enjoy high pulls, I learned the hard way that it's best to do them on days where the spot is very, very close to the landing area. Maybe this season I'll give the *planned* cross-country thing a try...

Is anyone familiar with the balloon operator at SDAZ? I'm making my first trip there in mid January and am interested in making my first Balloon jump. Are they available alot, or generally only on the weekends or at boogies? Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.

Corliss Is Really Going To Jump W.O. Parachute
daremrc replied to ryguy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The two things that ran thru my mind when reading this were either some type of landing gear, or a ramp contraption that would be comparable to a giant waterslide. either or both in conjunction with the right angle of incline could be feasible IMO Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.
