On the paragliding forums about once a month we get some random guy who bought his equipment on eBay and is now trying to teach himself to fly. We try to talk the guy into taking formal lessons, but they usually refuse, and I think there's a high probably they will wind up with major injuries. This happens at my local unregulated site too...some guy shows up that's trying to teach himself to fly. Does this happen with skydiving too? Get weird posts from some guy trying to teach himself skydiving? Toshi

What odd/cute behavior does your pet engage in?

Here's one I just found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTBOFCDZpYQ Toshi -
Resemble in this context is used 'tongue in cheek'. One would indeed normally resent a remark, but resemble is simply used in a joking manner, suggesting that the remark may apply to the reader in question. Yes, I have several friends who use "resemble that remark" correctly, e.g. tongue-in-cheekily. Toshi

ROFL!!! That reminds me...I have a friend who asks interesting questions. One day, she asked me (kinda rhtetorically), "Why do dogs roll around in smelly stuff?" after her dog rolled around on top of a dead fish. So, I thought about it overnight, and I had an answer for her the next day. First, consider human beings. We are very visually oriented, because a disproportionate number of our neurons are connected to our eyes. So, when we go on vacation, and we see interesting things, we take photographs, and show them to our friends afterwards. Next, consider a dog. A dog's brain is mostly connected to his nose, so his world is composed of scents. So...when a dog finds an interesting scent, he can't really carry the object home because he doesn't have opposable thumbs. So, he does the next best thing...he ROLLS AROUND on it so he can carry the new cool scent home to his friends in his fur. This also explains why dogs hate baths...it's because they've patiently collected a collage of cool neat scents in their fur, and you're destroying their artwork!!! Toshi -

When I was a kid, I had a friend who had a dog. One day, we were tossing a Frisbee back and forth, and the Frisbee landed in some branches about 10 ft high. So, my friend told his dog, "Go get the Frisbee!" and the dog ran around trying to jump up to the Frisbee...and getting pretty close. He was missing it by maybe a foot or so. Anyway, anytime thereafter we could tell him to "Get the Frisbee!" and he would jump frantically at the same tree branch even though the Frisbee was no longer there. Toshi -

What odd/cute behavior does your pet engage in?

A friend of mine lived with her boyfriend for a while, and when they were at the grocery store, there was a girl outside giving away kittens, and the kittens were so cute that they adopted one. The kitten was really scrawny, so they named her Kat-lean. (*thud*) Anyway, Katlean was the ultimate hunter kitten. I live in California, she lives in Oregon, so I drove up one weekend and arrived at their house around 1 am, and the door was unlocked so I let myself in. Katlean was running around entertaining herself. I had a laser pointer with me, so I spent about an hour playing with her, running the red dot across the floor and up the wall and under the chairs before my friends woke up and noticed I had arrived. My brother's other cat, Dot, is paranoid about balloons...she absolutely HATES them. My brother learned this when he had a silver mylar balloon in his livingroom for a while. Dot would NOT go into the living room. He tried to carry her over near the balloon, but she scratched the hell out of him to get out of his arms. His wife has a "scrunchie bin" in the closet, and Dot's favorite place to sleep is in the scrunchie bin. She's kind of a bitchy cat and hates to be picked up, but sometimes she'll come over and poke you in the arm with her paw because she wants to play fetch with wadded paper balls. Toshi -

My brother has a cat named Pug (well, actually he's his wife's, but anyway...) whom we suspect is part Siamese. When he moved into a new apartment, there was no furniture, and Pug would wander around the empty apartment complaining. He would meow like this: mrrrroooOOOwwwwOOoowwwrrrRRRoowwwRRRoowwwWOWOWowowoWOWOWWRRRRRrrr. He normally doesn't meow at all, too. First time I'd heard him meow, and it was a bit unnerving. Toshi -

I had a friend with a very smart cat. The cat would: o Climb up on the railing and push the doorbell button when he wanted to come inside o Look both ways before crossing the street Another friend's cat had the bad habit of pulling electrical cords out of sockets in the middle of the night. She would be late for work occasionally (no, I wasn't her manager). Same cat liked to carry empty toilet paper rolls around the house. She came home one day, and her cat met her at the door sopping wet! She followed the trail back to the bathroom, and found an empty toilet paper roll in the toilet....so apparently he'd been carrying the toilet paper roll around, accidentally dropped it in the toilet, and been trying to fish it out with a paw, and fallen in.
