You can pick up a couple of books that will help you prepare, if you are a tech person who wants the book knowledge. The first book I'd recommend is my own, "JUMP! Skydiving Made Fun and Easy" published by McGraw-Hill in 2003. It is still selling from some outlets, but you might need to get a used copy. Another terrific book is "The Skydivers Handbook" by Poynter and Turoff. It's an outstanding resource. If you haven't already done so, check out the United States Parachute Association web site at http://www.uspa.org/news/index.htm. __________________________________________________ As for prepping for this spring: another book to consider is "The parachute and its Pilot." Also there are alot of articles here that can be helpful about no wind landings, buying gear ect. If you can get to a tunnel it is helpful....I did 10 minutes of tunnel time prior to learning to jump and found it very helpful with completing the tasks that are required for AFF and obtaining the A license, but that is variable for everyone. Listen, watch and learn. I don't think that my parents understood why I wanted to skydive or why I continue to do so but, they have all been out to the dropzone. In a way I think that this gave them a better understanding for why I love to jump. We went down to elsinore in october.....my mom lives near there and came down for the weekend. She got to go on a "ride along" and she watched us pack and land. She was able to watch what we were doing and asked us questions as the day went along. I think that answering her question help put her mind at ease and she could see the comraderie and the vibes that were at the DZ. By the time that she left, she understood why we jump and is a lot more comfortable with us playing in the sky. Most of her fear came from ingnorance about the sport and the sensationalization of the tragedies that can occur here. Good luck....and have fun next week! I always walk the landing area....always. I even walk the landing area at my home DZ before I start jumping just so that I can walk through the landing pattern in my head. A bit neurotic I admit, but I like to walk the landing area. Remember: patience. You are going about things the right way, it just may take some time to get all of the ducks in a row so that you finally get a rig. Glad to hear you are having such a good time. You will find that you spend a lot of time unlearning the bad habits that you have acquired. My first issue was backsliding, then landing.....I am excited to see what next season will bring in regards to bad habits as like you, I do love a challenge. another option is to talk with your instructors about what kind of canopy would be good for you. They know your capabilities in regards to flying. I think that this is a very valid point. I had always been trained on a 9 cell canopy and then got a 7 cell (spectre as a matter of fact)......after 90 jumps still had trouble landing it, switched to the same size canopy that is a 9 cell (a Pilot) and have not had any problems landing it. Was it all in my head? Very well could have been, but it is nice to land to land on two feet instead of doing a plf on 75% of my jumps. Last jump was at the end of october - the only consolation is that we just got back from a scuba trip. 3 weeks and counting until our sebastian trip - YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!
