I just got a new pilot 168 and have been practicing packing it - to say the least it has been a rather amusing tale....nice to know I am not the only one struggling. Definitely invest in a canopy control course - it is well worth the money - matter of fact I will take another one as soon as I can....... New gear vs. used gear is something that has been discussed on here extensively the last couple of weeks. You will see a huge variation of opinions on what to do. Do a search and you will see what I mean. For me I bought used. Started off with a wing loading of 0.9....with a spectre 190/switched to a pilot 188 and dropped 15lbs of unneeded weight. Right now my wing loading is between 0.8-0.9. Finally after working out a majority of my landing issues - I am downsizing to a 168 pilot (new) which still puts my wing loading at about 1:1. My container is in great shape - considering the abuse I have put it through and fits me well even though I bought it used. I think what you get kind of depends on what your long term goals in jumping are, the amount of jumping you are able to do (seasonal vs. year round jumping), the financial side as well (although as I think someone mentioned some companies do give a military discount) and would you rather spend more money on gear or on jumping? These are questions that only you have the answers to. I bought used because that was the right thing to do for me - for others, the right option was to buy new. I wouldn't worry about buying a rig until you get through the training though - that way you have an idea of what your are flying. My wife traveled 1000 miles to fetch me when I broke myself, has driven me everywhere (like to work 5 days a week) for the five months I haven't been driving, moved 9 times so I could find the next job I was passionate about, lived in my bachelor pad (think construction project just complete enough to have a 250 pound projector hanging from the living room ceiling), lived in two states where her kids don't, found me my current killer job, sold three properties and bought one without a real-estate agent, acted as general contractor and laborer on four remodeling projects, and found our current apartment. She's a geek too (we met at our last startup. Turns out she was sleeping in her car when I slept under my desk) and completely understands what I do at work. Scores about the same at Scrabble so it's interesting. Likes the same movies and most of my music. She's adopted my cat in spite of having asthma. He's her baby now, getting lots of squeezing and love. She shops at Asian and Mexican markets, feeds me all sorts of tasty food (like home made cheese cakes, goat, german pancakes, wonderful omlettes) and buys my Arrogant Bastard ale. She travels light (we only took one carry-on and a small day pack with us for our 10 day honeymoon) and goes with me on jumping trips even though people have died just 10 feet away. My birthday present this year is a plasma TV so I don't even have to get out of bed to watch movies with her. My birthday present last year was an artist's loft in downtown Seattle so I could play with my toys and power tools even though we were living in a high-rise. That's just the start of how freakin cool my wife is. We've been friends for six years, a couple for four, and married for two so we're just getting started. Our wedding was exactly 10 years and 10 days after my first skydive so the date is easy to remember. I am pretty spoiled myself...Doc got me certified in scuba including my advanced and nitrox. Married me a year ago on the beaches of cozumel....learned to skydive and loved it so much encouraged me to do it if it was something that I wanted. He was supportive of me when I was getting my Bachelor's and my Master's degree....for my birthday a couple of weeks ago planned a surprise party and even though he had bought me a new parachute...wanted to make sure that I had something to open on my birthday so he bought me a 37inch LCD TV.....best of all he is my best friend and he has always tried to make all of my dreams come true.....the rest of it is icing on the cake....just him loving me and allowing me to be me and saying that "honey, I like who you are..." is the best thing in the world

You are going nowhere near my rig.....and if you do, just remember who takes care of you when you get hurt or need something....and remember that I am a previous ER nurse which means that I know how to stick tubes in places that you really don't want me to.
