Have you actually had to pull your canopy out of the bag? Or are you referring to pulling the D-bag out of the container? I'm wondering what kind of puzzled looks you'd get from the average passer-by while repacking a parachute by the security screening area of an airport terminal. I'm pretty sure she's referring to pulling the rig out of a gear bag, not pulling the Dbag out of the rig. But you have the repacking concept down. They could ask me all day long to leave the secure area (where I'd be repacking) and I wouldn't go. TSA rules say that the passenger is allowed to stay in the secure area until they've got all their belongings repackaged and personal items about them. I don't leave the secure area ever, until I've got everything where it was prior to entering the secure area. Having had a very expensive and valued heirloom stolen at McCarran/Vegas airport during a shift change, I'm pretty paranoid now. Coincidentally, a broadcast community to which I belong, has a nearly identical thread happening right now, regarding TSA damage to a 200,000.00 camera and lens assembly. This is exactly why we carry on our underwater camera when we are traveling - they are bound to cause some sort of damage if you don't - not that they are necessarily trying to but that stuff does happen. that really sucks.....I only have taken mine as carry on .... security here had us take them out of our carry on bags last time and they ran their tests on it....my only concern was that they may pull the handles. Could you imagine being in the airport and somebody pulling a reserve handle???? Not that they would but sometimes you wonder. I get nervous still....then the door opens and all of that goes away. It is difficult to explain but it seems like there is a clarity when you are up in the air....things in life don't seem so bad/challenging, and my worries just disappear. I have developed some great friendships with people across the states as well as people from all around the world - it is such a great reward being a part of this sport. Have fun......don't get too caught up in being perfect with every movement or with every landing because it is an unrealistic expectation. Listen to your instructors, watch people set up their landing patterns, and watch them fly thier canopy until they have landed on the ground (you will learn pretty quickly when a person is a good canopy pilot vs. and excellent canopy pilot). One way to alleviate some of your fear is to educate yourself. There are the forums here, articles, and books about skydiving (skydivers handbook, canopy and its pilot; are a few examples). And again.....have fun!

P.S. Ask someone to video your next several landings, then show them to the instructors and have them explain what is wrong, and even more importantly, what is right! I think this is one of the most helpful things that someone can do. I always thought I was completing my flare.....until I saw on video I was only doing a 1/2 flare. I have also had a really difficult time landing the spectre.....was only having stand up landings about 1/2 the time if that (just couldn't figure out when/where to flare as I was coming in - maybe a depth perception issue as I do have a problem with my depth perception) after about 100 jumps on it I have now switched to a pilot and not had the problems that I had before. I always practice flare up high as well as it builds muscle memory. As for the canopy control course - can't say enough positive things about it, it will just make you a better canopy pilot. if you use afrin for more than 2-3 days you will get rebound congestion.....which is worse than the congestion that you started with. Yesterday did 45 mins of cardio and lower body....then got a massage - oh that rocked....will go to the gym after work....we will see how it goes - will at least do cardio later and if time permits will do upper body. Just a Fan near as I can tell. They are compelled to tell me how they would like to kill me every couple months. Very Bizarre. Like with scuba diving, you shouldn't necessarily jump with congestion. Last time I did I ended up with a sinus infection......I have some sinus issues on a routine basis and use allergy medications and occasionally sudafed. Saline nasal spray can be helpful, but stay away from Afrin as it can cause rebound congestion and make things worse. The only way to know if you did damage is to see a doc........esp if you have chronic sinus issues, that way they can get you on a treatment regimen. On a side note, one of the ways that has decreased my sinus issues is by using a full face helmet. Had to work today so went to the gym after working.....45 minutes of cardio on the treadmill and then did lower body lifting. Brought up the weight on the lower body weights by 10 lbs today since I had done the upper body yesterday. Needless to say I am a little sore, no, I am a lot sore......but figure it will all be worth it.
