I need someone to do a BOC mod..Who??
masterrigger1 replied to gnatt's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you are simply replacing a BOC pouch, that's true. But if it is a modification, which is defined by the FAA as a change from the original manufactured configuration, then a Master Rigger has to do the work. I can probably install the BOC and pack the reserve before you finish fighting installing one with the reserve still packed....and it will be a cleaner install,....i.e. straighter stitching. Actually, lower contol lines made from Dacron will stay pretty much at the nominal dimension. 525 lb Dacron is actually the line of choice in my shop for longevity. Is is about the same size as 1050 Vectran, last longer, and slows down the openings more so that Vectran or Technora. BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Dave Dewolf is on the left end, second row. He has the solid red jumpsuit and white helmet. Just spoke to him about it. BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Tree, You probably have dislodged the clamp inside of the machine. This is common as most people will carry the machine head by grasping under the neck of the machine. If you do this the clamp will dislodge or come off of 3/4 inch motion pin. Simply remove the right side cover( as you are sitting in front of the machine) by removing the 4 screws. The Pivot/Clamp arm will be clearly visable inside there as well as the pin that it is supposed to be on. The other possiblity is the cutting knives. If the stationary knife and upper and lower knives are bent, they will not pass between themselves. Simply bend the stationary knife to allow passage of the upper and lower knives. If you have further questions, please call me on my cell or email me. I am currently in Cali with my other profession and will be away from the shop for a few weeks. Shlomo, I personally witnessed the TSO high speed drops on the Mini-Cricket. Danny Page, Chris Gay, Myself (and others) were doing a joint venture TSO drop project. The two projects were the JumpShack Racer Tandem and the Mini-Cricket. After The Mini-Cricket passed it's three high speed deployments, we thought we would have some fun. We attached the tandem Dummies to it and pushed it out. We were amazed! It opened without any damage! That is one strong reserve even if it is in the "A" Cat. If I had one, I definitely would have something other than Spectra on it! Just look back at the list of fatalities from the "rogue" hard openings in the last 3-4 years. I think there were two last year just at Perris alone IIRC. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Safe to say Icarus customer service sucks....?

The problem is not where the canopy needs to be repaired. The problem seems to be who's going to pay for it! ....and why they need to pay for it. There are a four reasons fabric will split or seperate. 1. The fabric is weak. This could be from manufacturing blimishes or old age (age not applicable here). 2. Point loading. This is where a possible tension knot or packing issue causes all of the opening stress to be localized in one area. This is the number one reason IMHO. 3. Line burn. Lineovers can cause burns in the fabric, thus spliting after inflation. 4.Extremely hard openings I do not know which applied to his canopy, but you can bet it was one of the four. Not sure that it is the same stuff. The stuff that Jump Shack uses is Type IV IIRC. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Call Jump Shack. They will sell it to you. You will have to "gut" it when you get it though. You use just the outer sheathing... BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

The size of the washer need to go over the larger material would be double what you normally use. If you use the Jump Shack loops, you just use a knot. Also, I never liked using washers anyway as they almost always have a sharp edge on them from the manufacturing/stamping process. BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Jump Shack has been using it for the last 18-20 years. This is the only material that I will use. It does not need a washer, just the knot keeps it in place. Good stuff! Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

There is no evidence of a tension knot there....look at the pictures! The reason the nose is folded under is that: 1. The lengths of the A-B's on the outside (PD numbering A5) are too short. Short enough to make the Nose roll under instead of inflating and going to where they need to be. 2. The second problem is that the lowers have shrunk so much that the tail on the outside is pulled into a very deep brake setting, thus not allowing those outside cells to inflate. The crossporting usually will make the ends cells inflate sooner or later. The problem is that one side usually inflates before the other causing line twists, spins, and on occasion, cutaways! I've seen this stuff hunderds of times...you just gotta love Spectra! Change nothing but the lines and problem fixed. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

That canopy is out of trim! ...and the intersect point of the a-b looks like they are catching the slider and holding it there momentarily. Try longer risers to flatten the canopy oout some and I bet it will not do it as bad. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

If the canopies are lined with 1050 lb Vectran, there is no need for specs. The line are not going to change in length that much. The real concern is how much wear the lines have. Jump numbers should be around 500-600 before replacement, but depends on the enviroment that they are being jumped and packed in. When vectran breaks down due to wear, the fibers will roll up in little ball-like lumps. If the "lumps start interlocking with one another from line to line (like causing line twist) then the need to replace them is straight forward. Those lines WILL NOT see 1000 jumps with out issues along the way. Again about 600 jumps should be the most you would ever what to get out of them. Feel free to contact me if you need further assistance. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

I asked about that also; they(US Military) are not the manufacturer, just the owner in the FAA's eyes. The blub about following manufacturer's instructions would be moot here. BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Jerry, I do not know how "normal" I am, but have something to add! I asked this question about 10 years ago and found a few answers. 1. Military service life is "in" the military only 2. This why the military usually "decommissions" the gear either by cutting the leg straps or lines after military service life. AFAIK, Contract gear has no civilian life limits. Difference between ICARUS (New Zealand & Spain) Manufacturing?
masterrigger1 replied to Kynan1's topic in Gear and Rigging
They are the same! BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com -
They are the same as far as line trim. I do not think Jyro has made any changes to the canopy. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Skyhook RSL snag on door handle, at pin cover flap

Like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAQ43yUVLho&feature=PlayList&p=692BC523B6E7D7E9&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=7 Never give up! Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com -
Eric, Mostly a moot point, but that is not the case here. A modifcation (AAD Installation) can be done without the manufacturer's approval simply by submitting a request to the FAA. Once the FAA returns the approval, the work can be completed and is legal to jump. There are just a few lofts that do this kind of work, but only a few. Just pointing out the process for field approvals.... But like you stated, the mods will probably cost more than buying a used, ready to jump H/C. Skyhook RSL snag on door handle, at pin cover flap
masterrigger1 replied to pchapman's topic in Gear and Rigging
Yeah, but that was because they could switch out the main and reserve when the main started to have bad landings and no one would know the difference!! Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com -
Jerry, I believe that we are the larger "orphan-age" here. Paraflite products, Atair's Alpha-Viper-Colbalt, Pisa Hornet-Heatwave-Skymaster just to name a few.... In fact, I am working on a line file as I write this for a Winchester Technologies Canopy that is different than the Atair canopies.... BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Paraflite gave me their info and line files on those canopies. The cost is the same for all Spectra lined canopies ...$280.00 plus S/H. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
