I try to promote safe and legal rigging practices. In most cases a Senior rigger will receive his or her certificate, and will for the most part, do work within their certification and privileges. Then as time passes by, they start venturing into the privileges of a Master rigger, at the same time laying claim that they are allowed to do them. See it all of the time..... Well, at least you are certified and allowed to make the error! Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Pretty much! They also can replace snaps, replace grommets, replace velcro, and install small patches that do not incorporate a seam. A minor repair is a minor repair regardless of if it is a certified canopy or not. BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

It would be the same as a certificated componet... ....The state of flying in a safe, as designed and maintained configuration... MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Here in the USA...Yes. Replacing a suspension line incorrectly can affect airworthiness. The definition of a major repair is a repair that if done incorrectly can affect airworthiness. Only masterriggers can do major repairs. Pretty simple in my book. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

That is because we as DPREs select the applicable task in each AOO for the rating sought. If you will note, each AOO has tasks for Senior and also Master riggers. We get to select the right one for the rating sought. JFYI, AC-105-2D has been removed because of the errors and etc. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

This is yet another area that has some confusion and is completely mis-leading to the unsuspecting rigger. The FAA certifies repairmen to a standard of which these repairmen are bound by regulation. A manufacturer cannot simply "upgrade" that rigger's proven standard to a higher standard of the rating that he or she does not hold. ....that's the FAA's responsibility! Pretty funny that AFS-350 is stating that the AC-105-2D was found to have never completely gone though Legal before publication...I wonder how that happened? used my 34 year old bellymount reserve yesterday
masterrigger1 replied to pchapman's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Peter, Are you still using speed links? If so, you might want to use the "L' bars instead. Just for kicks and giggles....I never have trusted the Speed links and change them out whenever I find them installed. Also, I have two rigs with R3's on them. I recommend two turns of seal thread just behind the plastic handle to keep the things secure. It does not really interfer with the operation of the R3 and offers just a little more security than without. Mr. Fish, Negative. It includes both mains and reserves. The new AC 105 2D (which is not regulatory BTW) has/had language that conflicts with regulation. This is just one of the areas that has conflict with the regulations or law. It already has been removed in the new re-write of AC-105-2D. Angela, The current FAA requlations still limits a Master rigger or someone under his/her supervision to do modifications and major repair work. Listing a Senior rigger would be incorrect JFYI. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Tandem Students wearing the Hand Cam?
masterrigger1 replied to catfishhunter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well it used to be until this last Summer Meeting. Yes, I am guilty of not looking up the current BSR's and never noticed that it was removed from the FAR's either. The FAR's still state that the student is to be given instruction and access to the deployment device. I guess with the latest and greatest from USPA that we simply instruct them to pull before impact instead of a specific altidude........ Yep...missed that one too! USPA seems to be be going after more convenience than safety lately! I still use both of them when I do tandems though. Is this your home DZ? Tandem Students wearing the Hand Cam?
masterrigger1 replied to catfishhunter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I do not see a problem with the student wearing the camera. I do however did note the the student in the video was not wearing a altimeter or helmet. For the people that do not know, the altimeter is required by both the FAA and USPA. The helmet is only required by USPA. Also of note, the pilot was operating a handheld camera (turned around to the back) instead of actually flying the plane when that should be his main focus. Anyone that actually has been in a stalled 206 (I have) would really appreciate the pilot actually focusing on flying at this point in the jump run. Chuck, I did not mean it to be detrimental in any fashion, shape or form. Sorry if you took it that way.... I just wanted to point out that some riggers may not be listed on the database that really do have a legit rating! Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Chuck, The database seems to be "older". I looked for several of my students that have had their ratings for some time (like 2 years). They are not listed for whatever reason. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Bill, First off the letter from Aviacon is is not a reply. It is a statement. There is a dfference, believe it or not, Also the phrase "spot on" means "factual" in this case. If you care to read it without malice, you might find that I am right in saying the statements in the letter are factual. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

I too agree that Aviacom should have handled things differently. The problem that I have in this whole AAD thing is the fact that "other" AAD manufacturers have had incidents that were either ignored or simply made light of. In fact, right on the PIA website you only have the Argus incident thread there. There is no other manufacturer listed as having problems that I am aware of. And without doubt, there have been issues with the other AAD manufcturers products. So, it points to be a one sided argument on the PIA website. Well, the AAD's intended design is as a life saving device and it did not do that. That's the intent anyway. I can assure you that when you (if you jump one..) turn the unit on, in your mind you giving yourself an relaxed, safe feeling of security. It would not be a feeling of " oh, I just turned my loop cutter on". Another question is when did it fire?...and did it work as intended. This is the part where it really gets interesting. The AAD manufacturer nor the H/C manufacturer want to talk about it....... I am positive answers will be flowing in the near future though. The reply is pretty rock solid and spot on: 1. The cutter was an "old" one. 2. There was a fatality @ Crosskeys that involved a Javelin and Cypress which failed to save the guy. 3. There was a fatality with an "undisclosed" AAD in Montana. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Well, you were close and headed in the right direction on this. The Crossfire I has 20 casscades, 10 "B" and 10 "D". The Crossfire II has 10 "B" and 6 "D". Just look at the Stab and you see only see two lines attached to the stab on a Crossfire II. The Crossfire I will have three lines attached to the Stab. The above references do not include the "A" lines. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Jerry, The riser tuck tabs "could" affect reserve deployment if designed or installed improperly. This is why I wanted to do an approval and the local FSDO advised me to do it in this manner. Also, I had some modded containers go back to the factory where they proclaimed it was illegal. Well, they are not and I have paperwork to prove it. Basically a CMA move. Lastly, you can ask for an approval on anything BTW through the FSDO in this same manner. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Walrus teeth are two tuck tabs sew onto the main top flap in such a fashion that they resemble two walrus teeth. I do not know. Photos would help in this case. BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
