California will also have canopy piloting competitions that PD watches very closely. So, i don't think you have to move to Florida. But...I do think you have to compete Regionally and/or Nationally. The intent of this canopy is that its a dedicated competition canopy...so if you aren't competing, there is really no reason to have one. Missing you Tommy. Another year, and to this day, New Years is never the same. BSBD. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.

I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I know two things: 1. I swore this could never happen until it happened at my home DZ. 2. The FAA has already started to get more involved with the recent landing area proposal and increased aircraft ramp checks (locally in CA anyway). There is more coming if we don't wake up. And lets be clear....this type of example is not specific to swooping. All parachutist could benefit from understanding the specifics of this case and understand what went wrong. In most cases, its best not to cross an active runway while low under canopy. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.

DZO's: Lower limit on canopy size?
jacketsdb23 replied to -Joey-'s topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Joey - You may think this is fun and games. You could probably even get away with jumping a high performance canopy (maybe). My concern at this point, is your attitude. The way you are approaching this whole thing is reckless. I'd much rather see someone with less skill approach something with the right attitude, then a highly skilled athlete approach something with a poor attitude. Its not about jump numbers. Its about attitude, experience, approach and goals. It sounds like you only have an end game without considering the path to get there. Please consider this as constructive criticism. You may be entirely different in person, but all we can go by is your reckless approach on the internet. If you approached me at the DZ with this attitude, I wouldn't let you jump a Navigator 260. Cross wind landing on reserve
jacketsdb23 replied to alexafox's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Just another tip...when the winds are high, you usually don't need as much toggle stroke to get the same "power" when you flare. Its not uncommon in high cross wind landings to have asymmetrical toggle strokes to keep the wing level. This takes time an experience to get a good feel for. Keep practicing...and if you're jumping with TJ, there is a wealth of canopy piloting knowledge right there! Canopy control courses?!?!?!
jacketsdb23 replied to baRRRpirate's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Talk to Scott Harper at your DZ. He should be able to help you. I believe he is a flight-1 instructor and puts on courses periodically. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -
Donny gave me so much support and encouragement at my first CP Nationals in 2010. He would show up for the occasional meet in NorCal and I always looked forward to seeing him when I went over to Davis. Always laughing, smiling, and having a great time. This leaves a big hole in the NorCal community. We'll miss you buddy. Say hi to Tommy for me. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.

In light of the Velo Guy thread...

For the record, my response to Lisa was not how I personally feel. Anyone who knows me knows I would never sell a velo to an unqualified pilot. In fact, here is my ad in classifieds for my velo 96 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=127172;d=1 Several inquiries abruptly stopped when I asked for references before discussing the sale further. For the record, there was also an Expert Cypres fired labor day weekend in California at the bottom end of a 900+ degree turn. Jumper landed the two out biplane. Mind you, this was not a misfire, the unit acted within the parameters it was designed for. Pertinent Info: JFX loaded at 2.4. Turn started at 1100' and did a ~990 degree turn. Estimated firing altitude 150-100'. Jumper plans to move to a Speed Cypres. I'm actually quite amazed that these incidents are happening at the rate and frequency we are hearing. If you swoop, get the right tool - or don't use an AAD. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.

Assuming you're not joking, you are part of the problem. You have a right to do anything you want, but IMHO this attitude sucks. Oh well, that person would probably get it from someone else if you didn't sell it. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -
California CP - Local News Coverage

Thought I'd share a good segment from Good Day Sacramento about our season ending competition. They came out and did a live segment that aired yesterday afternoon. Great competition, 19 total competitors, and everyone had a great time! http://gooddaysacramento.cbslocal.com/video/7703620-canopy-piloting/ Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -

California Regional CP League
jacketsdb23 replied to jacketsdb23's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
We are holding our fourth and final meet of the 2012 season at Skydive Sacramento in Lincoln, CA. After a tough start and several pond closings, we've found our permanent home at Skydive Sacramento http://www.skydivesac.com/. While not ideal for a "regional" league, it's what we have to work with right now. If anyone on the West Coast feels that their DZ and pond could host an event in 2013, please let us know. Otherwise, we'll continue to hold all of our meets at Skydive Sacramento. You can view all of the league meet results and follow our progress and league standings on swoopleague.comhttp://swoopleague.com/2012/08/09/ca-league-standings-final-meet-982012/ Special thanks to all of our volunteers, www.adrenalineobsession.com and http://www.performancedesigns.com/ Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -
Don't Bounce a Newbie, I almost did...
jacketsdb23 replied to Vertifly's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have a velo ad in classifieds now. I ask them to provide references in any reply and make it known that I will be checking them prior to any sale. Hopefully that keeps some of the inexperienced away. I'd rather sit on the canopy forever, than sell it to someone who is unqualified. AFF Level 2 - Advice Needed
jacketsdb23 replied to shotwell15's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I know the tunnel people are gonna hate this....but.... Skydiving has thrived well before the tunnel was around. Most of your instructors learned how to skydive without the tunnel. The goal is learning to skydive, while having fun, and being safe. F*ck the tunnel. The tunnel is being used as a crutch. Listen to your instructors skydiving advice. My opinion is that instructors are leaning to much on the tunnel. Go to the DZ, jump out of a plane, have fun, be safe, and learn. Its not a sprint to see how quickly you can graduate or earn your license. Its a journey that should be enjoyed. Now...if you love the tunnel....and have money for both....go do it. But the tunnel is not the same as skydiving. Maybe if there was a tunnel for canopy .....eh, nevermind, different subject :) Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -
Unnecessary cutaway. Very Dangerous and stupid

There are a few discussions on canopy transfers when I did a search: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=603887;search_string=canopy%20transfer;#603887 Agreed, 1000 ft is probably not the right place for that, but at some point, it may be the only option. Not a good option, but the only one. I've been convinced cutting away at 1000 feet is probably fine...but I hope I'm never in that position, or I've messed up elsewhere along the way...and violated some of my own rules. Its good to be ready for the unexpected though. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -

jacketsdb23 replied to pj_jumper's topic in Safety and Training
Fair points. I've always set 1800 ft as my hard deck...and I've stuck to it. I also tend to unstow brakes immediately after opening in case of an issue. I don't think i would intentionally fight anything to 1,000 ft and then get rid of it. It would likely be gone long before that. If I'm at 1,000 ft i've likely made the decision to land it already. Obelixtim, Going through 1,000 Ft, I might think about a canopy transfer....thoughts? 1000 ft is getting fairly low.... Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -
I'm not Ian, but let me give it a shot. You never hit the person you see. Thats the problem. You can't be sure at a turbine DZ that you've accounted for everyone. its easier at a single cessna DZ. People who habitually land downwind need to sit, or get out low on their own pass. DZO needs to correct this. If a mistake is made, or winds shift mid load, then you have the responsibility to everyone that got on the plane to follow the pattern that was set. If you don't want to, or can't land your canopy downwind...stay grounded, or find a canopy you are comfortable landing downwind in. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.
-
And this is why, IMO, we as skydivers will not figure this out on our own. Everyone is selfish. The guy forcing everyone downwind and you deciding which way you want to land regardless of the direction set. The guy who wants to land in front The guy who has 10,000 jumps and doesn't need rules The guy who sees every canopy and knew nobody was there The list goes on.... Nobody hits the canopy they see....but hey, it worked this time right? Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy.

I don't think I'd ever cut the line in that situation. If I had to take too many wraps to get it flying straight, it becomes a control problem and I'd chop it. Losers make excuses, Winners make it happen God is Good Beer is Great Swoopers are crazy. -

I had basically the same thing happen (knotted steering line around my RDS grommet - my fault) and I took a wrap on the good toggle to straighten her out and landed on rears. Velo 96 loaded at 2.2. I fly on rears all the time though, and land on them a lot even when I have two good toggles. Never thought about cutting the bad brake line, until someone asked me after why I didn't.
