The staff and I are going to pitch to Sr. Management that i/o having a fancy holiday party like in the past (The Biltmore, etc.) we would like to donate to a worthy cause. Some ideas we are tossing around: - working a kitchen in a homeless shelter - donating time / gifts to a neglected/abused child shelter - donating time / gifts to a transitional living facility - donating time / gifts to an autism facility Anyone have any other good ideas??? g "Let's do something romantic this Saturday... how bout we bust out the restraints?" For the past week whenever I open DZ.com and come to the Bonfire there have been 13 new threads each time. The first few times I thought... hmmm that's odd. I'm low.... average about 1 degree low all the time. Although the wierdest thing happens, right before I get really sick it drops low. I would swear I'm running a fever (body aches, etc.), but when I take my temp it's typically around 94 - 95. The next day, I'm down for the count running a high fever. coming out from the dust of the storm... All the notices have been given out, our office was saved - no one will leave. However our HQ office was hit pretty hard. Everyone is being pretty tight lipped, but from what I've heard they had to close the office early b/c everyone left after their notice. We will receive the official word on the damage, er um, new organization tomorrow via a pre-recorded DVD that was sent to us. Also from what I hear everyone was offered a decent severance, some will not be let go until March of 09, most by December of 08. Are any of your co-workers or friends really into guns? Funny.... my boss mentioned something towards the fact that most companies notify employees they will be let go on Fridays - it supposedly is to keep employees from going postal. So, the company that I work for made an announcement back in early February that an organizational efficiency program was to be put into place to "prepare" our company for that ever impending "dark cloud" in the future. The team assembled to this task named the project CORE. The office I work in for the most part has taken a positive, light approach to the whole program and we joke quite often.... comments like: "I don't want to be CORE`d," or creating buttons that state "I've been CORE`d." We talked of bringing in apples for monthly meetings. We've even discussed buying Care Bears for the team tasked with firing everyone. Anyway, the final day is here tomorrow, and although I've been assured my job is safe, I am very nervous and a bit sad. Many of those who will be laid off I've worked closely with for the past 6 years, shared family photo's, supported, and a few I would call friend. I've got a lot of noise in my head right now; mixture of feelings, wishing I could do something, what to say to those being laid off.... ACK I know there are so many companies out there going through the same process - this isn't anything new, but I'm just really beside myself today. Think of obedience training with a dog - would a trainer recommend spanking / or using a paddle on a dog to get a desired reaction.... most likely not. I would like to think humans are much more intelligent than dogs and just as easy to train minus physical punishment.... I grew up in Utah, and most of the homes have full basements of which have food storage. I know both my Mom and my Grandma would can food and we would have enough food to last the family for at least 6 mo to a year in the basement pantries. Hunting provided at least a years worth of meat. I don't know if canning is still as huge there, but it certainly was when I was growing up. Yeah, we discovered after talking about it last night - that all our camping gear will suit us great. We have 2 - 2man, 1 - 3man, and 1 - 7man tent. 4 sleeping bags, 2 propane stoves, 1 water filtration system, great back packs. We have the option to head for the hills with the SUV / motorcycle, or the option to head out to sea with the sail boat. Plenty of gas cans to fill for extra fuel. It's amazing when you actually sit down to think about how prepared one can be if they really were aware of their surroundings. g "Let's do something romantic this Saturday... how bout we bust out the restraints?" It's funny, cuz if you start thinking about the things you may / or may not have in the house you'd be surprised how much you have available. ex. * Camping propane stove (in case of loss of power). This will provide you with cooking / and boiling water. * You own horses, right???? They would be a great use for an evac in certain circumstances. Pluse they can haul additional weight for you. * Food - how much canned food / or powdered food do you have - these can last and are easily prepared in case of emergencies. * Flashlights - good lord, we have about 10 of them around the house. Just do periodic checks to make sure the batteries are good. * Tape - think McGyver, very useful stuff * Whistle - kids always have them. * If you have a basic first aid kit - GREAT - if not there are plenty of items in the house that you can use for gauze / splints etc. g "Let's do something romantic this Saturday... how bout we bust out the restraints?" In light of the recent natural disasters around the world it got me to thinking "just how prepared am I?" After sitting down last night and discussing this with the S.O. we have a pretty good game plan in place for a natural disaster, or other type of emergency. How prepared are you????
