I'm not a fan of analogs, but at least the color section on the ft-50 is in a usable region.

Lol, like that happens alot.

Another ear pressure problem again
LordRatner replied to chrismgtis's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have similar problems all the time. A guess about one in every five trips to the DZ, I'll have equalization problems. I just got good at opening my face shield right after the canopy is deployed and valsalving. I have to do a pretty gnarly valsalva too, it feels like I'm pumping air into my head. On the other hand, if I don't equalized within about 30 seconds, I get some vicious migraines. -
When did you stop being nervous?
LordRatner replied to Thomsen91's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
About jump 75 I stopped being afraid of jumping out of a plane. My first time out of a balloon, at jump 120, was a different story. LOL -
Ya, I said the same thing about downsizing, until I got good at landing. Now the story is a bit different. Canopy work and landing are as fun for me as freefall.

This claim needs to die. Talk to tdog about an analog failure. Besides, batteries are less of an equipment issue, and more of a user issue. That's like saying an AAD is dangerous because you have to remember to turn it on.

Atta boy, Travis. I agree completely. Unlike you, I'm not an instructor. If someone asks me a question, I give my opinion, and if I feel its something someone else is better suited to answer, which is often the case, I'll normally go with that person and ask, since I would like the answer too. This is a message board. The whole point is to get opinions from other people. If it was only for instructors to comment, there would be a requirement to register enforcing that. I think it's fine to throw a disclaimer in there telling someone to consult an instructor who is familiar with them, but then answer the damn question, otherwise, don't waste time with an empty post.

Question: What's The Lowest You've Ever Pulled?

If you really want to impress him, try making a lampshade or jacket out of human skin. It shows not only creative vision, but the skill required to work with odd "fabrics"

The time has come; which one should I do?
LordRatner replied to b_dog's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Doug, this ain't PBB. Thicker skin isn't a big deal here. -
Hey! Blow yourself. The guy in the green helmet is the coolest cat ever.

Heart rate readings while skydiving
LordRatner replied to bradp's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Technically this is wrong too. Weight is determined by the pull of one body on another. In a dive, there is no normal force on your body, but gravity still pulls on you, giving a weight. Now, when we start skydiving from 100 miles AGL, then we will lose weight noticeably... and get all that weight back quickly... Gives a new meaning to "straight to my hips" -
Titusville Manifest and Sky Gods new deployment altitudes
LordRatner replied to jraf's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Eh, I'm on your side. I had a jump where I was in the saddle at 2500 ft. thats high for me. But lo and behold, someone on the ground was convinced I pulled right before my AAD would have fired. It took my Neptune, and others to convince this man of thousands of jumps that he was being an idiot. I've always marveled at how a community of people who jump out of airplanes are so thin skinned. Weird. -
Titusville Manifest and Sky Gods new deployment altitudes
LordRatner replied to jraf's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The only thing this thread has done successfully is show the huge gap between those who skydive, and those who run DZs. Look, I'm all for having a good relationship with the manifest people. I like every single manifester at Mile-Hi, even Lisa when she looks like she wants to tear your head off and suck your spinal fluid out. Why? Because I've never seen them pull an attitude on anyone, regardless of how stubborn or hostile the person may be. That's their job. They are the service employee, and I am the customer. My personal beliefs dictate that I treat them with respect, because thats how I want people to treat me. Plus, being nice has helped sneak me on to a couple loads I wouldn't have been able to make otherwise. But if I didn't want to be nice, I don't have to. And as the employee, she does. Sure, the DZO can choose to ban assholes from their operation, and I would be fine with that, but every time I open a Parachutist, all I see is article after article about the declining numbers and how DZs are losing business and facing shutting down. Seems to me like these DZs should be taking every step they can to keep people coming, and yes, that means putting up with and pleasing even the most obnoxious customer. Is that my endorsement of jerks at DZs? No, I dislike them as much as the next guy, but I didn't make it my business to serve them. And to the manifester who had the balls to demand respect, you should be thanking whatever god you pray to that you have that job, because if you pulled that shit as a waiter at a restaurant, a salesperson at a department store, or anywhere else, you'd be out the door and on your ass so fast your head would spin. And to the OP: You dealt with an employee with an attitude, and you did the right thing; you took your business elsewhere. They will suffer for it, and if she treats others that way, she will continue to hurt the DZ -
Aircraft emergency exit - do you pay your ticket?
LordRatner replied to jerry81's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Go back and reread my post. I stated that the DZ either breaks even of makes up to $5 per fun jumper. So if the DZ was run like a traditional business the lift ticket prices would be about $60. So, please go back and reread my post fully if you'd like to discuss it. Wrong. Traditional business looks at supply and demand. $60 tickets would yield less profit, because you wouldn't pay that much. Going a bit deeper, you take less profit than you could on a fun jumper because they bring in alot of the tandems and AFF, which pay alot more than $5. But it still leads to maximizing profit. -
After reading this thread, you should do a jump without a rig. At least then you won't have to worry about how to log it.

Does it every get old or routine?
LordRatner replied to Kynan1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm not a freeflyer, so solo jumps are plain boring to me. However, any RW jump, be it 2way, 4way, or big way is a blast. If it goes wrong, it's still fun, but if it goes right, it's rewarding too. Find your style, and go with it. -
Yup, sinuses. You can get similar pain after scuba if you're not equalizing properly. My pain didn't last ten hours, but it felt like a monster migraine. Try a val salve before jumping out.

Probability Risk of Skydiving vs. Driving a Car
LordRatner replied to Hazarrd's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It is amazing that people try to argue that driving is more dangerous than skydiving. -
I'd like to start swooping by the end of 07. And I'd like to continue to improve my RW skills, but thats not so much an 07 goal, as a perpetual goal.
-
Congrats dude. Travis is a killer instructor. He didn't do any of my AFF jumps (taught us the ground school), but I've jumped with him after getting my A. He's a very pro-active jumper. Oh, and Justin's a good guy too. Glad you're having a good time.
-
Eh, it depends on what type of skydiver you are. I'm on a Sabre2 170, and buying a 150 to jump for a while while my rig is built for a 135. I know people who love Spectres for their soft openings and steeper slopes. In my admittedly limited experience, I was able to pull more performance out of a Sabre 2 landing than a Spectre. If I wait too long to flare on a sabre2, I can just rip the toggles to my knees and keep from eating dirt. The Spectre was a bit less adaptive. I don't like the generic answers you get here (ask your instructors, stick with analog, don't downsize so fast), but this time the generic answer is right, demoing the canopy is a good idea. My local DZ has renters with each type of canopy, and it took one jump on each to see that I wanted a Sabre2 Best of luck to you.

Do some solos. Have a little pointless fun before you go back into structured learning. Flip... flip flip... flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip flip . flip flip .. flip
