    HyPeye

Still happy with mine...in fact, riser slap whacked out my CamEye II a month ago, so I replaced with a HypEye as well. You can look straight into sun if that's where your subject is, and still see the LED, if that's important at that point.
  2. Vegas and FCP allow for timeline export to any number of formats. My method is to capture the footage while it's being displayed on a 32" set that everyone can see, capturing to my external HDD connected to the laptop. That way, people can see the jump immediately following, but it's not edited til later. Sometimes I'll do the edit right there as well, depending on the load frequency and what I'm supposed to be doing at the moment.
  3. If they're just VOB files, you can download the trial version of Sony Vegas Movie Studio and it will read the VOB files straight from the disc.
  4. And maybe it doesn't mean that. Maybe it means a lot of things. Not for us to judge, because we're not the ones jumping out of the airplane with the student. Maybe it will click on the next jump and all the training will come together to turn this person into the next world class skydiver. Maybe your brag of 7 jumps means you're a hot-shot, and so you'll be in the incidents forum. Or not. Lots of very dedicated skydivers have taken more than their required 7. I passed everything in less than 7, but the DZO wouldn't sign me off regardless of what my instructors told him. Now I'm a 200 jump wonder and I suck at what I should be good at by now. Does that mean I should start bowling?
  5. No, you didn't. 25 jumps is a hard requirement. And the point of the original posting is not for bragging. I wondered about that m'self. Even if you had an unethical DZO that would sign off an A at 18 jumps, this would require a dishonest entry of information on the A license application. Unless of course, the A license in question isn't a USPA license but rather another organization outside the US?
  6. Any word on what sort of funds have been raised to help Tim out?
  7. I'll be visiting both in the early 3 weeks of November, coming in for Tropfest. Looking forward to meeting some of you, still trying to decide where to jump in NSW and Melbourne as well. Appreciate any input.
  8. You've got it almost exactly how I've got it set up. Folder of altimeter shots (20 of those, various lighting/types) Folder of takeoff (same, roughly 20 shots) Folder of air to ground Folder of landings (TI/Student POV) Then I've got a customized script called "Ultimate S" that stores various templates. All I need to complete the sequence (from the camera) are: Ground interview Climbing into plane Aircraft interview Freefall/deployment Ground interview/exit interview. Those are essentially always the same length, so the template works with the in/out points that the tape provides. No in-camera editing required. All that has to be changed is the name/date in the title track. Each time the cam record is triggered/stopped, it creates T/C break of course, and this is what determines the clips/scenes. Works great for what little I do, but lately it seems like a bunch are getting farmed off my way. it's not a workflow for everyone, but with a laptop, cam, and some stored shots, it works great. [edit] failed to mention that our DZ only has a King, so different aircraft don't apply in our particular case.
  9. I keep hearing this, but if you build templates, this simply isn't so. DVD burn time is identical, so the only slowness is in a render. There are means around that, too. With a template, you can ingest the entire skydive in 3 mins, have a finished edit ready to burn 4 mins later. Can you start to finish a linear edit in 7 minutes?
  10. The amount PayPal takes is minimal, especially if you do a lot of volume with them. I haven't had a personal checkbook for a few years now, for some folks, it's much easier to do things online. Sending money to family and friends is free. https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees
  11. Paypal from me... If every skydiver offered 10, 20, 40, 50 bucks, or those that can be more generous, Tim should have a decent rig pretty quick. Hopefully someone is providing one in the meantime...If I wasn't so fat, I'd offer one of mine. thanks, Tim, for providing a good story in the news. Always nice to read positive stories about skydiving instead of the alternative.
  12. there is a HUGE list at http://www.vasst.com/resource.aspx?id=ea50de73-e3c2-4421-b4b0-d871584737ef
  13. skymama, do you have a PayPal account we can send funds to?
  14. Regardless of what you or I might do, the point is, that part of the island is nearly as bad as the Waipahu and Waianae are seriously infested drug areas, and Mokuleia isn't a whole lot better. Hawaii is the Ice capital of the USA, and is one of the top meth states. Crime is rampant in certain areas. You can't leave ANYTHING laying around. I work there quite regularly, and have seen or heard about all sorts of theft of even silly little things like blankets, towels, shoes, sunglasses, whatever...while the owner was only a few feet away. Someone attempted to steal my rental Harley; only the disc lock prevented it. And that was in a heavily trafficked parking lot, in front of a major mall. I'm sure the person that stole the rig isn't a skydiver. I'm equally sure it's a user that saw opportunity regardless of what it was, and took it. Back to point, I'd like to help Tim out. I started skydiving at Mokuleia, they're a great bunch of people there.
  15. Any word on donations? Any one taking up the charge? I don't know Tim, but I know the DZ and the area...scary area up there. Lots of homeless, lots of hard core users... I'm positive someone will get a few bucks for it. I'd like to help out if there is someone leading the cause...
  16. If you bought at B&H, ask for Barry. Use my name. If that doesn't help, PM me.
  17. Trevor, I'd recommend trying another one. The preproduction model I jumped wasn't anything like this. It has nasty fringing, but nothing like what you're showing in that clip. That is horrible.
  18. There are other reasons too... Basic economics... High supply, low demand...easily replaceable. The sport will only suffer, and get a worse name. It will bury itself in apathy and anger if the quality of AFF or TI's go down, injuries will likely rise, yadayadayada. If you want to unionize, when skydiving was at its peak was the right time. Or when the next wave/peak comes, just before the crest. Extract the word "Skydive" from the conversation and subsitute most any service industry title in the conversation, and you'll find much of the same sort of discussion. The only difference is that typical employees/contractors don't take a leap of faith from 13K every day wanting that a small bit of nylong and string will assure a save arrival back on the earth.
  19. LouDiamond, do you know if the stabilizer was enabled? On this sort of camcorder it's imperative to disable it for HDV, because the way the fringing and deblocking work, it looks very bad. Also, you need to be sure you're not shooting in auto modes. This camcorder cannot shoot well in auto, period. AP mode is pretty weak as well, IMO. That said, I've shot it vs the HC3, and really prefer the HC3, even though some reviewers have picked the Canon over the Sony.
  20. I'm certain you aren't the only one in Xtreme sports that feels this way. In Yosemite several years ago, I met a climber that claimed that if anything ever happened to him on El Cap, he'd sing his way down. Surely enough, later that same year he did exactly that.
  21. After talking to your instructors about gear, you'll maybe want to consider the "personal" stuff first, and rig last. Buying a new rig straight out of AFF is a little silly, IMO. Get some jumps in and figure out what you'll be sticking with after a while. Helmet, goggles, gloves, altimeter, audible (maybe), jumpsuit (if you're looking to spend some $$) are all personal, and things you'll want to have for yourself sooner than later. Instructors are great for this sort of advice and sometimes know where great deals may be found.
  22. One possible, as it happens a lot with Premiere and Sony Vegas, is that you have garbled timecode on the header of the tape file. This can cause the capture app to see NTSC as PAL and vice versa. Just a shot in the dark, but I've seen it a lot both personally and in various fora. You might try the demo of Scenelyzer, as it can be instructed to ignore garbled T/C, but won't correctly report file length. Additionally, it's a very good idea to allow approximately 10-30 seconds go past on a new tape prior to recording at the head of the tape. On cheap DV tapes, this is often an issue.
  23. Awesome cam....sensor made by Dalsa. Dalsa Origin is one of the best cams in our industry. Check out the video component of this sweet sensor if you have some free time and wanna Google Dalsa Origin.
  24. No one is using the DSR 60, because no one can get access to them. I've tested it on 12 jumps with a pre-production HVR V1U, and it worked great. However...that was also at Skydive Greensburg, and altitude wasn't much above 10kMSL. I'll have a pre-production, RTM version later this week that we'll jump; I'll let you know. However, I'm expecting it to fail; so is Sony.
