  1. Because the Boy Scouts receive tax dollars/public funding, the USPA is a private organization. Has nothing to do with the GM program. I like Derek's concept; inspect and post the results. However, I somewhat doubt that will have any impact on how Skyride or their dropzones will be viewed either privately or publically.
  2. Is this slightly dramatic? There are drug dealers, wife beaters, assault with a deadly weapon convicts, alleged murderers, and probably a few shoplifters that are/have been members of USPA. At least in the USPA (unlike NARAS or RIAA), there aren't self-professed murderers, drug dealers, 7-11 robbers, and wife abusers that make money writing and bragging about what they've done. I'm not ashamed to be a member of both organizations. It's disappointing that the USPA was pushed to settling, but it's better than being bankrupted, isn't it?
  3. There in Canada, aren't they called "CARS? A very brief glance at the CSPA website suggests that Canadian law requires TSO'd gear; perhaps I'm reading it incorrectly. "BSR's" in the States are recommendations. "FAR's" are the law. I might be incorrect, but it appears that it's much the same in Canada?
  4. Yes, I'm familiar with the L series; it's made in the same factory as their broadcast lenses. However, I wouldn't have thought new skydivers would be putting a $2500.00 lens on their camera, and the 15mm is very common. Perhaps I should have spoken more clearly.
  5. Do you mean the 15mm? No, it doesn't have IS, but doesn't need it as it's so wide.
  6. Clearly you've never been the target of a large-award lawsuit. So the insurance company refused to insure them in the event that they lost the lawsuit. Sucks, and only shows Skyride in more of a bad light. That's all it is. Are *you* willing to pony up the hundreds of thousands or couple million bucks to pay for the fight against Skyride? To what gain? Credibility? You'd rather USPA go away to be built in another incarnation, just to maintain credibility? Particularly right now with all the threats to small aircraft, Homeland Security, aviation taxes, etc? Yeah, you've been a member of USPA for about as long as I've been alive, but I've owned a business slammed with several lawsuits. Sometimes, you have to choose whether you want to uncertainly risk the battle or assuredly stay alive with a black eye. Between the State of Georgia, State of Utah, and Skydive Arizona, it may well be that this small victory for Skyride is very short-lived and the USPA concession may turn out to be meaningless.
  7. So long as you're not planning on viewing the footage anywhere but YouTube or smaller, it's fine. You can't make a DVD with it or anything, but if it's just for gross use and you've got a hundred bucks to throw away, and don't mind spending time getting it stable (the centermount is well known, and is laughable, like a fulcrum on a teetertotter)...why not? It's small, lightweight, and takes pictures of slightly lesser quality than most cell phones...so I'm sure it would be good to review a dive quickly, assuming you've got a computer handy.
  8. If the field orders are reversed, it will indeed appear more shakey than it is. DV is lower field first in NTSC, upper field first in PAL. HDV is always upper field first. Progressive has no fields. If you feel you're inducing more shake by slow motion, here are a couple tricks.... )Run a deinterlacer before slow motion on those clips )Double the clip, offset by half a frame (some NLE's don't allow for this) and slow both clips down equally. Then set the top frame to a transparency of 50% and reverse the field order. This creates field blending, which often smooths things out. )Use a good third party slow motion tool like Twixtor or similar. There are many of them.
  9. Well, at this address, http://1800skyride.com/Skydiving/Sandy/ they have a site for skydiving in Sandy, Utah (one of the most populated suburbs of Salt Lake City) where there not only is no DZ, there isn't even an airstrip. And never will be due to the corridor for the international airport. Or there's http://www.utahskydiving.com/ that looks an awful lot like another DZ's website in Utah. Skyride have no affilation with anyone in Utah. Worse, when I called to "book" a tandem, I couldn't find out where Skyride wanted to send me. A Skyride rep here on DZ.com said they'd send people to Las Vegas, 7 hours away. Ooops...Boise has an affiliate, and it's only 3 hours away. And people in SLC would pass within two miles of three DZ's on their way to Boise, or pass within fifty miles of five DZ's on their way to Las Vegas.
  10. As there are *many* threads on jump numbers, and two threads on the CX7, howzabout we continue the discussion in one of those threads?
  11. It's never gonna be up to my standard but the heavy, stretchy kind of bandaid (it's actually Curad, if I remember right) with a small bit of foam underneath has held OK, I'm mostly wanting to kill the back two diaphragms of the crappy surround mic they put on the camera. The next gen has the same mic, too. Just saw the new AVCHD card cams yesterday for the first time, they look promising as well, but this surround bullshit is very frustrating.
  12. 90k will be plenty fast to test it, can't help you if you don't have your own car. Maybe take the train? Head north to Boros and ride a snow mobile with the Saami?
  13. Drive down the road with your car window open, hang the cam outside I use the bandaid with a small bit of auralex under it, covering the back half of the microphone. Still not awesome, but much better, losing those two elements.
  14. To apply a transition between two clips in the timeline the clips should be on the same track,no space between. Drag transition from Tasks/Transition window to the cut between clips. You can add before, at, or after the cut.
  15. OOH!! I like THAT idea! And two people holding you stable, listed as "Grip", and a cute girl with a notepad flying behind you, taking polaroids and writing down things for continuity
  16. can you put a tandem stoe around it to hold the cover in place? I'd probably remove it were it mine. but I'm good with the bandaid.

have so far, rec'd several PM's offering help and advice. Very much appreciative guys!! Keep em' coming! ~d
  18. It's just a fun blast from the past, thought you'd get a kick out of it.
  19. You need Vegas 8a to fully support AVCHD camcorders.
  20. Anapod copygear works wonderfully as well.
  21. Wait'll you start jumping with one before figuring it's a no-brainer. Doesn't have the same impact in the air as on the ground, either. On the ground, I always use a mattebox and usually a follow focus, and often have a focus puller. Doesn't work so well in the air, although I'm considering doing a spoof jump with a mattebox and focus puller.
  22. CX7=6MP HC5=2.3MP (Still modes) The HC5 will provide a more saturated screengrab than the CX7, but the CX7 will be a more clean screengrab, simply by nature of the DSP. Somewhere in this thread/forum, I've posted screen grabs as well as my review of the camcorder.
  23. No argument from me, Scott. I hate having to color correct, etc in post. I far prefer getting it right in camera. In the production world, you don't get far with the attitude of "we can fix it in post." but there still is always Photoshop.

    Israel

I'd spoken with an Israeli Air Force officer that is a good friend, he tells me that Skykef isn't at all worth the drive. I've emailed Paradive, but the response about renting a rig came back with info about renting a tandem (Sigma) rig. I've only got one free day there, so not really into carrying my rig (I'm off to other parts of the world following Israel, can't skydive in those locations).

Anyone here have information about jumping in Israel, specifically Tel Aviv? I'll need to rent gear and trying to find either someone at the DZ that can reply to email, or a sport jumper there that might be willing to rent me their gear.
