  1. In an hour, I can have a half-way trained DV operator operating an F23 very well. In two hours, I can have that same guy running a VIPER, Genesis, SI2K, and similar. The RED camera is faulty and flawed in many, many ways. Anyone who can't admit that has had a little too much Koolaid. It's not at all a secret, just spend a few minutes Googling to see all the complaints. REDCODE itself has a lot of issues, both in Premiere and FCS. The camera should NEVER be an impediment to the creative process. The camera should be a fluid extension of the DP, nothing more. A "quirky" camera serves as a distraction in anything but a big-dick swinging contest. Good thing Jim Jannard doesn't make MARDs or reserves. We can't afford "quirky." Yes, we own RED. But wouldn't dream of taking it to a paying project. Same with guys like Jody Eldred, John Faustino, Jon Fordham....no one will stick their neck out on the line for the sake of big dick. It's not about the camera. There are people that rent it...which is why we bought it. IMO, RED is a great concept. My company bought into it, just as we've bought into F900/HDCAM, SI2K, XDCAM, HDV, and even a few AVCHD cams. We'll make more money in one week on a 900 than we'll make on the RED all year. Aside from the fact that neither the common workflow NLE nor delivery world is ready for 4K. Yet it's been harmful to RED and the industry at-large, to have a reputable guy make a statement that he's gonna blow up the camera world, and then does it with a half-ass product that three years in, still can't function as advertised, and still can't function with a single operator without a DIT and factory support. As a moderator on the CreativeCOW, I'm constantly stunned by the number of guys that defend their $17,000.00 camera and its $20,000.00 support system. Cameras are like pencils and paper. The writer shouldn't have to think about whether his pencil will write or not when the creative thought strikes. Or whether the pencil will get too hot and burn the writer's fingers or the paper before he captures a complete thought... And back to topic, the RED isn't an HD camera anyway, so it's not really part of this discussion.
  2. Unless of course, the media outlets and magazines go beyond the norm of Skydiving and Parachutist. Bear in mind...Scotty Burns has recently had a photo published in USA Today and the new Boston Globe magazine, and ESPN, EXPN, and CSN all have taken media from this event. Norman has some incredibly unique content. We're trying hard to ramp things up on the media side, and it's always easier when the media is controlled before it hits mainstream. Like they say..."A high tide floats all boats."
  3. Interesting... Bill-engineer, super math/tech-head Me-creative, right brainer, can't add 2+2 I've never used the webbrowser except to buy books with, and hate the music player (besides, I *always* have an iPod in my pocket). The device is very cool, it was a nice gift. But I just like that analog feel of paper. The Kindle, I felt like I needed to be "nice" to it, because it's equipment. A book...I can curl up with. And books don't need batteries like almost everything else in my world. But...if you're gonna go digital, the Kindle is better than the Sony, IMO. MUCH sharper display, easier to hold, and I like the page flip options. [edit] failed to mention...when the cost of most Kindle-delivered books is less than the paperback version of most books...I'll likely use it more. Prices for most books on Amazon are for hardback, discounted to around 10.00. Paperbacks are still cheaper.
  4. I have one. It's on the bookshelf gathering dust. I bought it for an overseas trip and a very long flight. I also have a Sony, which is pretty much the same thing. Don't use it, either. There is something to be said for turning the pages of those dead trees vs flipping a cursor or pressing a button.
  5. Didnt President Obama admit to using coke? EXACTLY, he did. He admitted it. And STILL got elected. So he's fucked if he's honest, fucked if he lies. But Bush claimed to never have used coke or other substances. Mitt Romney claimed to have never said "Fuck" in his life. Sarah Palin thinks Africa is a country. But Obama sucks because he asked about traffic tickets, current tax owances, firearms, and illegal alien employees, along with asking about if you've ever done anything that *might* embarass his administration *if elected.* This questionnaire is nothing new. it's merely that the frootcakes and sore losers can't bear to go without something over which to gnash their teeth and pull out the sackcloth and ashes over. Ahhh....but there is the unknown. He doesn't say he'll discriminate against you if you HAVE done any of these things, he's merely saying he wants to know.
  6. Duhhh..... Ever been in Washington on a Sunday? The whole city comes to a stop because of the cowardice of Bush. Clinton did the city a favor by enjoying services in his home much of the time. Obama has been able to attend church for years without having a procession before and after him. Now he has zero choice. I'm sure it's a PITA to mount a bunch of Secret Service guys, and he probably would like to spare himself the agony for now. And if not? Who really cares? God will understand. Poor guy, he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, isn't he? Maybe, just maybe if he were white, Republican, and had a name like "Steve" he'd be less of a target for the red(neck) states. maybe he prays while he pumps iron. I know a little sweat makes me feel humbled.
  7. Wow. Great poll! Given that the last vice-president shot a constituent... it's probably a valid question. CYA... As one commentator put it, (paraphrased) "This'll probably freak out a quarter million NRA types, but it won't bother the other 65 million firearms owners in the USA." This owner of firearms couldn't agree more. BFD. You can read all the questions [url "http://graphics8.nytimes.com/packages/pdf/national/13apply_questionnaire.pdf"]here The fireamrs question doesn't seem out of line at all in context of the others. But there are always conspiracy theorists searching for Hoffa in the ether...
  8. There is plenty of footage online, plenty of online commentary. For Youtube, these are great, IMO. there are comments on the quality in the photo forum as well.
  9. it was. Same with photos, just not "the photos." Media have had full time access to photos, blog, micro-articles, participant bios, etc. before, during, and now after the event. It's not at all uncommon to have an embargo on proprietary content after an event. Some events we shoot require that tapes and other digital recording sources be turned over to the event producers. It's only because I was roped in as a media coordinator at the last moment, that I have any of this media in my possession. In my experience...that's pretty rare.
  10. I have disabled public access to the content. It was my mistake to have thought that the content released to broadcast media was also OK to release to the public. The event organizers have asked that the media remain limited until press, promotional, and other opportunities are in place. Until last night, the content had been password protected, and is now back to as it was before. Apologies for any inconvenience. mea culpa.
  11. We have a photo forum here.... The GoPro cameras are barely a step up from the Barbie doll Television Reporter camera kit you can buy for your kids. Excellent for screwing around, great for making low-resolution web video, useless for anything meaningful in skydiving. If students don't mind seeing soft/pixilated movement, I suppose one could use it as a super cheap debrief camera.
  12. Sony Vegas Movie Studio (99.00) Premiere Pro CS4 Canopus Edius iMovie8 All read the TG1 AVCHD just fine. There are also converters such as "AVCHD UpShift"
  13. First Ground Photo Gallery is up now. See the first batch here with more to come. The air to ground stuff...damn...slammin' off 8 images a second, there are a LOT of images to go through.
  14. Sorry, I thought I'd posted the link in that same post. Wednesday, final jump
  15. look up two posts. I just posted the link to the last jump on Wednesday. Dunno if I'll post the other jumps, gotta have a conversation with the powers that be... That last jump was Stoney and Rick's jump.
  16. Then its all in the hot tub and the filter will skim it ( we hope) and stop grossing me out Spot. I've seen your old wingsuits, Glenn.
  17. If you look at the Monday jumps, the cloud footage is there. The best of it is Norman's, but his footage isn't included in that reel.

    Only in Texas

*Anything* that Dvorak writes needs to be looked at with a jaded eye. He has honed the art of sensationalism to a fine point, particularly in technology. However...sure appears on the surface that the shooter was under the impression he was stopping a rapist, and for all the commentary, I don't know I could make a mental connection between stopping a rapist and allowing him to escape because the 'threat' is now past. Adrenaline and fight or flight tend to skew things in difficult situations, don't they? FWIW, i have a former bandmate serving life in prison for shooting his wife and her lover when he caught them in bed. Interesting point, he'd probably gotten off had he not gone into another room to reload and fired more rounds.
  19. Tuesday's jumps in high def/Vimeo can be found here Be patient, it's 1280 x 720, and unless you've got a really fast connection, get a cup of coffee while it buffers. Apologies for the delay, I thought it was uploaded last week.
  20. What if he cheats with another guy?
  21. you need the Cookie before you can jump the demo wingsuit?

    Sore losers

Before Tomorrow Comes is the song that they dedicated to Obama during the tour. "We can be so much more than we are."

I *am* with Virgin...and Richard Branson be damned, it makes no difference. Gotta disagree with you on other AlterBridge songs...I like his voice range. he's also done a few skydives. Moreover, they campaigned for the winning president. And Creed minus Republican pussy Stapp and his "religious convictions" makes for all the diff in the world.
  24. I'd think you'd get a lot more views/comments if you used a more common format, like JPG. It could be larger, too. Very pixilated in small .tif format. I like upper left.
