  1. what Phree said. Beware that the version you linked to doesn't have a MC codec license. This means no MPEG2 or MPEG4 output, and no AC3 support. There are some really curious upgrade bundles out there from Videoguys and B&H, where you buy old stock for pennies, and pay only the upgrade fee to Vegas 9.
  2. If I understand you correctly, you have both QT and WMP on the same computer and one is choppy and the other isn't? Other than look ahead, I couldn't offer any explanation.
  3. Please clarify who this was, as it's news to me? Merely passing along what three other wingsuiters that didn't participate said to me. That they were called by organizers on Sunday evening to fill in slots. *Maybe* they're bullshitting, but I'll take their word for it given the circumstances.
  4. I'm gonna downsize for more of what I do. After jumping with Brian and Charlie in their Phantom2 suits....No matter how much I closed it down, just couldn't maintain forward speed AND lift with them when they punched it out. Those P2's are GREAT suits. SO much better than my P1. Front loops are harder in a big suit too, of course. All that said, "dress for success." What is it you want to do and who do you want to do it with?
  5. Glad you took that suggestion to heart. While you're taking suggestions, I'd like to suggest that if you publish a document that says you're taking registrations until 6pm on Saturday, that you actually *do* take registrations until 6pm on Saturday. What's querious is that captains were running/calling around on Sunday night (the day after Saturday) looking for others to register because the formation needed bodies.
  6. if you're facing the sun for *most* of your shots, a fill flash would be my response.
  7. I'm really glad you were there, Michal. Had I had any clue about how the jump would go, I'd have invited others too. It wasn't at all what I'd planned as a first jump back. BTW, you broke my VISO. And you missed a really fun day with Brian and Charlie. I didn't include your landing, because mine was better.
  8. we landed at the high school over on Bundy Canyon, a couple miles south of the DZ. Michal landed in a field on Mission Trail, about a mile away from the DZ. Twas a lot of fun in spite of the double-fail.
  9. The Scary Roll that didn't happen. The jump was supposed to have been a four way dock, and was organized dirt-dived as such. This was my first post-incident jump in the wingsuit with experienced skydivers, and was my "qualifying jump" for the record event. Thanks to those that participated in my return to the sky, thanks to Michal for the video. Andreea and Scott, thanks for the fun laughs. It feels good to be back in the nylon.
  10. Eli, you did a kick ass job at the event. It was curious to see you on-camera one moment and running for water and sundries the next moment. Thanks for the jump you did with us. I didn't know you only had four! Howzabout no more trips to Ontario via LAX?
  11. You're most welcome. I wish I could fly as well as I know Vegas. As a side note to anyone reading this thread and using Vegas (and other NLE's that don't install the QT installer), for viewing .tif and QT-wrapped files in Vegas, you'll need to have the Quicktime authoring tools (free) or QT Pro (29.00) installed to use the GoProHD or the ContourHD camcorders. Vegas doesn't have a QT decoder license, and they shouldn't install one, IMO. Vegas essentially "picks up the phone" and calls the decoder only when needed. This way it's not running in the background all the time. Helps keep Vegas small and fast, which is why you'll notice NEVER having to render for preview. Set your preview to Preview/Auto for best results with the GoProHD. Depending on your processor speed, you SHOULD see full frame rate at this setting.
  12. Vegas 8.1 opens it fine here. Do you have Quicktime installed on your machine?
  13. Hmmm. I like the feet idea. Maybe I will see about a permanent ankle attachment for 2 little pegs and stick them inside the PVC tube. Releasing the whole affair would just consist of spreading my legs so the little pegs slide out from the ends of the larger PVC. Getting out of the A/C might be fun :) In the case you dealt with, how did the jumper exit? -Michael "What-if" this idea to death. What if the peg slides through so that the banner can't release? What if the stick falls off your body and javelin-plummets to earth? What if the peg releases from one foot but not the other and the relative wind jams the pole into the other peg so it can't release? IMO, having a hanging harness to test this stuff is critical. In our scenario, we spent a lot of time balancing the payload while hanging in harness. Our poor stunt guy had very sore thighs, sitting in a harness as weighted objects were balanced in the spreader. It's a super-duper fun idea, and super duper to visualize in your head. It's really easy to visualize all the good stuff. It's very difficult to visualize all the bad stuff, and that's probably the greatest benefit of this forum is that you have a bunch of people that can help spot the bad stuff.
  14. Did you charge above/beyond slots for this events? Did you donate to a charity at these events? Was there a personal financial gain at these events? What sort of outside sponsorship/donations helped fund your event?
  15. And I like it if the landscape in the background is an important component in the shot.
  16. "degrade" is a relative term. Since you've "degraded" the image before it hits the sensor or film, it's still a pristine image before it hits compression or digital processing. ANY time you can get the image correct in glass vs post, it's the way to go. But at the same time, you're committed. You can't undo glass. You'll find that the "fix it in post" concept works really well for screwing around, but snobby and meticulous people like to do things up front rather than in the back. Photoshop is capable of a LOT, but you're still pushing chroma/luma values around, and that usually induces noise. Bottom line, to each his own and what you're comfortable with. I've even been known to jump with a circular polarizer! (they don't work well for every day use, but they do some nice things if you're working with the polarizer for the sake of what it is)
  17. Maybe not to someone who doesn't truly appreciate music it's not. But if they're songs that can't be readily replaced, or even if they are, they've been paid for, and worth what they cost. That still doesn't make it "important". I lost a whole bunch of music tapes in a car wreck once, which weren't readily replaceable, and for songs that I truly appreciated. Yet I was able to buy new ones. It was simply an inconvenience, and not "important". Surviving the car crash is what was important. If someone thinks that losing a few songs on an iPod is "important", then they lead a very sheltered life, and have a rude awakening coming someday, about the true meaning of "important". please find for me Jeff Healey's performance at the Knotty Panties club in Park City, Utah, a few months before his death. You can't. Isn't it all about perception, John? What is important in one person's world isn't very important in someone else' and it's not for me nor you to judge what is or isn't, is it? I'm a fan of firearms, but I certainly don't want/need one with me at all times. Having music with me at all times is pretty damned important. To each his own. I'm just not that judgemental.
  18. Nice page (but filled with odd opinions.) "Never use a tobacco grad!" WTF?? Ok, tell that to a LOT of producers and photographers. "Do it in Photoshop?" Pushing colors and contrast makes for additional noise.
  19. I get your point. You're missing mine. CX500 is more expensive than the CX100. Similar glass, same encoder, no better quality, but twice the price and only major difference are some convenience features (that few would use) and quadruple the recording space. I'd rather deal with 16 or 32 gig mem sticks and have more cameras than have less camera option and no greater features. For the cost of one CX500, I can carry three CX100's. For the cost and size of one Panasonic HMC 150, I can carry 10 CX100's. It's not just about the cost of the gear, it's about what is available from the market and what the cost per feature benefit is or isn't. Adding an SSD vs HDD doesn't get you anywhere if there aren't features and durability to support the extra cost. An underwater housing for the CX100 costs twice as much as the camcorder. In that event, I'd have to consider the cost of the camcorder vs the depth required, for example. I'm willing to sacrifice three CX100 camcorders at 9 feet in an Ewa bag vs the cost of a hard house at 10 feet. Cost vs benefit, risk vs reward both come into play when determining crash/high risk cam kits.
  20. Ah cool, sorry. Didn't realise that bit
  21. Since solid state camcorders are available for less than these other HDD units, would you want to take a kludge into a hostile environment? For the additional cost of the more expensive camcorder plus SSD replacement drive, I'd prefer to have a couple of backup cams, a battery warmer, and deal with that instead. To the OP, I got considering what we did on the Iditerod, and we did use chemical warmers with booties on batteries. it was -20 and less at night plus windchill.
  22. Maybe not to someone who doesn't truly appreciate music it's not. But if they're songs that can't be readily replaced, or even if they are, they've been paid for, and worth what they cost. OP, I use a tool called "CopyTrans Suite." It'll break you free of iTunes for management, allow you to repair disks, manage libraries, create/edit/delete playlists, transfer songs, video, and photos. It's MUCH better than iTunes, and can sync with as many iPods as you'd like. You can even use it to copy directly from one iPod to another, unless it's DRM'd media, of course. I'm also with Dave, unless I HAVE to buy a piece of music from iTunes (due to exclusivity), I'll buy from Amazon or Walmart. Same price or cheaper, and nowhere near the hassle.
  23. I couldn't agree more. Some of them have a lot of years and thousands of jumps, too.
  24. The team that did Everest with XDCAM used pocket warmers in specially made sleeves (I think Hoodman or HoodPro made them) that heated the LCD panels from the backside. Heated bra's are available for large format camcorders, although solid state media doesn't need them; I'm not sure they're available for consumer cams. The guys that could give you a lot of info on cameras and Everest are the DIT guys at BandPro in Burbank, or Peter Gloeggler at BandPro in NYC. They've not only shot a fair amount there, but they've tuned high end cams with consumer taps on them, too. dunno if that helps. Were it me, I'd toss a few CX100's in my kit with a stack of chemical warmers, and use neoprene covers to keep the warmth in. Single element lens adapters if necessary for width, and of course a UV and probably a few polarizers in there too, and then just forget it. Carry a few cams in an insulated lunchbag and you're done. But I've never climbed Everest.
