" think i remember learning in physics that the polarized lenses block out only reflected light, like light off a lake. this is why fishermen like them " not true. Polarized lenses only let light though which is polarized in one direction. The other direction is blocked. In terms of x,y,z (3-d)..light travels in the direction of z and the lightwave vibrates in the x-y plane...then x or y is blocked in a polarized lens. Hold two polarized lenses behind each other and turn one 90 degrees and you wont see anything though it..... _______________________________________

skylark. You base your opinion on the fact that the chance of an event will be based on the outcome of prior events in the past. That is your flaw in your reasoning. You say...if you have 20000 good jumps, the 20001 wil probably be bad. Stochastic processes doesn't work like that. True that there may be 1 fatal jump out of 25000 (average) but you shouldn;t feel worried if you approch the 25000. You have as much chance of a double mal at jump 1 then at jump 25000. The idea is that you have a chance of a mal of 1/25000 per jump....Therefor your chance to have a good jump is 24999/25000. Which is a pretty good chance that you will survive your 25000'th jump... _______________________________________

Hee.it's your life..don't ask permission from others if you're willing to take the additional risk. Often in cartoons you see a string with a note that sais: "don't pull"..Then you see a silly duck looking at the sign...pulling it..and then a piano smashes on his head..result..big hole in the ground and a terribly headache...fortunatly the duck always survives You know of course driving a car is much more dangerous then skydiving ..so I say..just do it...The worst that could happen is that your ability to drive a car may be reduced.. As you won't be in a car just ignore the warnings silly duck :). Seriously..if you say that you are not sure yourself if it is a good idea, you should listen to yourself because you already gave the asnwer to your own question... _______________________________________

I think the reason that reserve jm not chased the student that it's dangerous for both JM to track to the student..Not that the task of the reserve(?)/second JM is over. SO whats your saying if main didn't deploy after being pulled and stays in rig...second jm pulls the reserve? I Don't think so...What about the cutaway pillow then..??? _______________________________________

[reply Maybe im misunderstanding but how would it be better to pull your reserve "head High" rather than belly to earth?? euh..do'nt take my word for it..I'm a newbie. It was my understanding that if you're in a belly to earth a pilot chute/spring could bounce back and stay in your burble. It seems to me when this happens with a reserve at a low altitude you will not be too happy... I was taught as aff-student to put your feet up to your ass before you cut-away and pull reserve. Therefor you go from horizontal to a little vertical right? PIlotchute gets cleaner stream of air thus better deployment? Correct me if I"m wrong please... _______________________________________

"and like some1 said surely any1 without any experience would try and steer out of the way of powerlines" appearantly not true...some students/people just react differently to fear by doing absolutely nothing and just freeze. He clearly panicked and wasn't thinking rational anymore. I have a question. Do AFF jm's ever pull the reserve for a student. For instance mr. Lutz. JM sees he pulls his cutaway. Should he pull his reserve too or is that always the responsibily of the student. I say its the responsibilty of the student and the JM should leave it alone. What should the Jm have done if he saw the Lutz-guy pulling his cutaway. I don't think JM saw him do that but what if he did...Opening his main chute wouldn;t make sense anymore.. pro...student can deploy reserve in a head high position which is better then belly to earth. con...student may not pull at all and can only be saved if his cypres works.. _______________________________________

What a total idiot is that lutz. What I cannot understand is that he's willing to show up on tv with that story. "I looked up and saw a round chute". I bet he never saw his chute. He's making himself look so stupid. Sueing his Instructor and then the power company for placing the towers up there? This guy has totally lost his sanity. I bet he would sue mother earth for just being there if he went in. Did he deploy his own reserve by the way? I thought so. Rsl would have his reserve out right away. Was it low enough for a cyprus-fire? Is this guy so stupid that he doen'st even know his mistakes?? _______________________________________

thanks..that second movie is going to give me a nightmare now... You can see him hold on to the pilot-chute instead of tossing it and seeing his cypres fire...I wonder if he finished his AFF after this? _______________________________________

[replyWow, very constructive... so you 're just criticizing relying on what a friend's friend read on an anonymous post on a forum, and a good part of prejudices... Hell very open minded :) (That's OK Fab, I know it s just a joke, but don t give the poor liquidfire that french and belgian skydivers are just stupid and dangerous... I am french and I know I am stupid, but not dangerous :)) it is a bit cheaper, around 150 € Just to be clear...I don't think french or belgians are stupid or dangerous hehehe..let me see..I specifically said that it was just rumors and that the source wasn't very reliable right :)..The only prejucis (?) I have that if you're french..you can't drive...thats all . I like the prices for jumps by the way in belgium....There low..Now I'm jealous.. You;re right though..I shouldn't have said it..didn't realize belgians had internet also... _______________________________________

in that case any country will do just fine...then you will make a tandem jump..costs around 200 euros I think ground school was pretty fun :) _______________________________________

saw those rumors somewhere on a forum (not this one) a long time ago. http://www.parachute.nl/discus/messages/23/769.html its not a very reliable source...i give you that :) Where do you jump? And how much is single AFF jump with one or both instructors? _______________________________________
-
the netherlands, around 1300 euros. Thats 12 jumps (7 aff+ 5 jumps where you jump alone). I heard some rumors that belgian dropzone are sometimes not as safe as others. Don;t know if its true. About french DZ well..if the french skydive the same way as they are driving cars...Hell..thats a scary thought :)...Besides they hardly speak any english over there. I would go for the netherlands, Germany or Spain. Spain would be a really nice place I think. _______________________________________

Didnt thought of that.... _______________________________________

Couldn't you have put your reserve as a main in your other rig by the way? That way you could cut it away and wouldn't have to use a round reserve... Ik hou niet van bolletjes _______________________________________

maybe....just maybe hookitt wasn't too serious when he posted his reply? That smiley thing in his post suggests he was just making fun... although he did edit his post...makes me wonder what I have missed there
-
Glad you landed in one piece..May I ask why you didn't pull the reserve handle?....and what was the problem with the main chute? Arent you glad you had rsl???!!! :)) _______________________________________

hmm..something tells me you're not entirely serious now.... _______________________________________

Very interesting to read...I must say that I'm not so opposted to the whole idea as I first was at the beginning of this thread. Hearing about the precautions Danrossi takes, I'm withdrawing my first post here. I have changed my opinion on the matter. Don't think it's irresponsible anymore as long you are aware of the additional risks. Fab has been educated _______________________________________

***Nooooooooo!!! Im gonna be doing cutaways in my sleep! Lets cutaway from talking about cutaways before I cutaway from my sanity and end up being some deranged sort of cutaway freak in some cutaway asylum who cant stop talking about cutaways! *** Sorry dude, too late for that _______________________________________
-
***This is a pretty massive subject, and with all the info going back and forth, I think we''ve only touched the tip of the iceberg on cutaways. *** Oh my god ....really? Fab is shouting :"We want more, we want more, we want more". Tomorrow part 2/255 of this exciting documentary/discussion about cutaways....that's 255 days left people I"m rolling on the floor laughing...sorry about that _______________________________________

hehe Of course you are right. But it is more like an expression..You break rules for a purpose, not just for the pleasure of breaking them. Maybe my english just isn't good enough and I should have said this in dutch ... ***not skydiving to break the rules. *** That would be plain stupid indeed. _______________________________________
-
*One rule does *not* fit all.* This is true. My own personal motto is:" Rules are meant to be broken". ***A few years back Texel, NL sent up not one but several blind people for a S/L jump. Double radios, probably one at a time, and they evidently did not pass the full medical, but with proper planning, they went up and came down in one piece. *** Didn't know that _______________________________________
-
***Can it be accepted?(e.g. flare when you hear the crickets)*** what if a few birds ate all the crickets??? ***But there have been blind people skydiving in the USA since at least the 1960's. Not a lot, and that's probably why it's still happening -- there hasn't been an accident with publicity that made it impossible for other careful people to do it. *** So you're saying that if a larger number of blind people would take up skydiving it would probably be considerated dangerous and prohibited? I rest my case :) _______________________________________
