Keeping current in Canada through the winter

Dress warm! -
There better be a WFFC next year!!! And the jet better be back too!! I didn't have enough jumps/required license to go this year but hells yeah, I'm going next year and I better be able to get my jet jump in! Is there Pre-Pre Registration available?

There it is!!! The wisdom that I wish I had three years ago. Of course if I knew three years ago that I would be driving 2 hours each way every weekend to my dz I would have never bought the freakin' house. But owning a house isn't all that bad. Just think, in two or three years, when your well has gone dry, you'll have equity to steal from!!! Home For Sale: Twin Cities, Great Location!

Drop in the number of Skydivers
wildfan75 replied to skrovi's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Because Europeans get like 8 weeks of vacation a year...USA? Not so much. Lucky if you get three or four weeks (and that includes sick time!). -
Naked 4 way! Might I suggest the doe-see-doe jump, minimal grips needed. We did it this weekend for someone's 400th jump. It would have gone really well if someone (Todd!!) who was suppose to be in the crotch didn't climb out on the strut first, and it was my first jump without a jump suit (never jumped in regular street clothes) so I lost it a little when we got to our first accordion. We got two accordions though!!! Definite fun, fun, fun!

Couch Freaks 2006! Labor Day weekend
wildfan75 replied to shellybellyfly's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Did someone say Jello shots?!? I think I need to start trying to find a doggie sitter for that weekend and someone to car pool with (anyone headed down through the Twin Cities?). -
Another update...I'm officially a B license skydiver! Woo Hoo! Now on to night jumps. Also hammered out my first naked jump and my first eight way this weekend (4 points too!). I know, I know...Beer, beer and more beer! How life has changed over the last three and a half months! I think one skydive (whether it be tandem or static line or AFF) should be mandatory for everyone! That way everyone would understand and at least non-skydiving individuals would get it. Yep, Death, Taxes and SKYDIVING!

Other than the fact that I ended up at Urgent Care on Sunday with strep throat and couldn't jump at all on Sunday, I had my BEST skydiving weekend so far! 1st Naked Jump (Happy 400th Jamie) 1st 8 Way (Hit 4 points!) Got B License I owe a shit load of beer but WOO HOO!!!!

I hear ya sister!! Since April 22nd (when I took my s/l class) I've spent 15 out of the last 16 weekends at the dz, which is 2 hours from home. Everyone keeps asking me when I'm going to move out there, and I would do it in a heart beat if I knew I could sell my house for a decent price, find a job and a new home (I was offered part of a hanger for $300/mo!!). I think part of my obsession is that I never really lived for the moment before I started skydiving. I was always thinking about tomorrow, next week or five years down the road, not by choice, but by survival. Now I'm 30 years old and enjoying life in the moment. I hope that never fades!

All the more reason to get the video! If you pass out, then you'll be able to see what you missed! I was terrified my first tandem. Then the door opened and I encountered a level of terror that I never thought I'd ever experienced. Eight months (including 5 "MN Winter" months) and 55 jumps later...

Static linere here...First hop 'n pop was from 3500', but it was really a hop 'n pop. I think leaving at 6k and pulling at 5k is more of a 10 sec delay than a hop 'n pop.
-
Ditto for me exactly. When I did my 10 sec, my count sequence went something like this... "Arch, 1000, 2000, 3000, altimter check, 4000, 5000, 6000, altimeter check, shit, what number is next, look, reach, pull".
-
QuoteQuote When I did my checkoff 3.5, I treated it exactly like an emergency. When they said get out, I hurled out the 182, did a forward flip and pulled at 3s. reply] If you treated this like an emergency, why in the hell did you do a forward flip??? Yeah, yeah, yeah, low jump numbers, blah, blah, blah, but I think I'll find quite a few up numberers and instructors to tell you that if you have an emergency, might want to forego the forward flip. As a static liner, no I'm not afraid of going a little low, however, I still want to be in the saddle by 2000'-2500' (pull around 3000') so if something does go wrong I've got plenty of time to take action.

How scared/nervous were you before your first jump...
wildfan75 replied to chris_uk's topic in Introductions and Greets
I'm surprised that you can't see the carpet wear marks at the dz where I paced non-stop before my first tandem. I was perma-grinning, white knuckling it all the way to 10k, but as soon as we let go and were falling, I was all smiles! I did my first tandem just to be able to say I skydived once. Never in a million years did I think that nine months later I'd be only a few jumps from my class B license! For about my first 15 student jumps, I had issues with the door opening but as soon as I got the "step out" command, it was all business. Now I can't wait for the door to open. It means I get to jump out now! -
popsjumper---IMO, I don't think it got too off topic. The discussion regarding hnp's and pull altitude are related to the differences in AFF and S/L. I'd be curious if there are any other discussions that could stem from an AFF vs S/L debate.

My s/l progression was this: Jumps 1-2: Static Line Jumps 3-5: Static Line w/PRCP Jumps 6-7: 5 second delays Jumps 8-9: 10 second delays Jump 10: 20 second delay Jump 11-25: All from 10,000'. Two were 3 ways, three were 4 ways (one which got 8 points!), eight were 2 ways, 1 was first jump on the transition rig (hand deploy and smaller canopy so I pulled high (4000')), and 1 was a tracking practice jump. $730 and a signed and stamped proficiency card later, I was a licensed skydiver. I think it should be each individual's decision as to what they deem appropriate for their pull altitude. When I first started jumping it was 3500'. When I started doing multiple ways, we tracked at 4500, that way if I went a little low before tracking, I was still within my comfort zone. On one of my last jumps I did on the manta I made the comment to one of my instructors that either things are slowing down in my mind or it's taking longer and longer for the manta to open. After that comment they put me on the transition rig, which after about 10 jumps, also seemed to get slower and slower openings. For me, when things start to slow down in my mind, that's when I know I can go a little lower to pull because I'll be able to recognize a malfunction earlier, evaluate, react and execute a plan. But any time I downsize or change canopies, I'll increase my pull altitude again until I notice things slowing down again. I personally think being able to do a hop 'n pop without any worries is very valuable. What if there is an a/c emergency at 2000' or 1500' feet? I know that I can leave stable and pull immediately without any problem. If I was nervous about getting out at 3500' or 4000', I couldn't imagine what would go through my mind if I had to leave at 2000' with an a/c emergency. I think it's more important to be able to do this than having more ff time. And as for the learning "curve" of AFF vs static line, from what I read on here, AFF is like 8 jumps, then you're signed off to jump by yourself as they try to cram "everything you need to know to jump in 8 jumps", but you still have to fullfill your class A requirements. With static line (aka my experience with static line), is that you're taking one step at a time, and tend to have more instruction. For me, it's easier to learn step by step where one or two things are added, than like in AFF were many things are added to a single jump. All just my opinion! No, you can't change it. I just just curious on how others, especially instructors, rate/compare/contrast the two.
-
Or you might not like AFF as generally it costs more, less focus on canopy control, and you end up having to meet the same requirements to get your class A. But whatever you do, have fun and be safe!

If the harness fits, check to see what you can fit into the container. On transitioning from the club's transition rig (silhoette 190) to my "new" rig, I was able to borrow and fit someone's pd-190 into my container before jumping my silhoette 170. That way you're not having to pay for full gear rental, but not downsizing too quickly. But listen to your instructors AND be 100% sure of your decision.

Holy Sh*t!! $1970 for 25 jumps! That's outrageous!!! My "package" was $730 total (in which I did several 2 ways, 2 or 3 three ways, and 2 or 3 four ways). Do students who jump there walk away holding their a$$e$?!
