Old Photo--Southwest Airlines near miss
itllclear replied to ltdiver's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
http://ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=31230&key=0 I've met the pilot of the the Lockheed. He was being vectored for a visual @ NAS North Island . Jumper first impacted the wing between the fuselage and the #3 nacelle, then the horizontal stab. Also see: http://ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20001211X12786&key=1 http://ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20001211X13693&key=1 http://ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20010601X01046&key=1 "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Must have been on the east coast. DPE's out in LA wear sweatshirts and jeans. Puts the candidates a lot more at ease. Even the FAA Ops Inspectors out here wore polo shirts and leather jackets when giving me Part 135 check rides! "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." On one load at the '76 Elsinore Scrambles, 2 jumpers didn't get in and took that advice. And Bubba said "No one ever listend to me before!" "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."

Think of how much time you spend dirt diving for each minute of freefall, and how much better the skydive goes if you dirt dive. Same goes for flying. If you really prepare for each lesson, it will go much better. Have fun! Harry Leicher 2004 CFI of the Year FAA Western Pacific Region "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? The actual report itself shouldn't be usable in court, as it was not prepared under oath. The testimony of the NTSB investigators is limited http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/13nov20061500/edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2006/octqtr/49cfr835.3.htm Sometimes the reports miss something. For instance, most Piper Senecas I have flown have some type of autopilot installed, and in the case of a loss of control incident, it would be reasonable to mention some inspection/investigation of the autopilot. However, in the following report, there is no mention of the autopilot in an occasion where its use might have affected the outcome of the flight. http://ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20001212X18632&key=1 For these reasons, it seems appropriate for a plaintiff to want to get involved in the investigation as early as possible, perhaps to get his/her own investigators involved, if only to be sure evidence is preserved. Filing a lawsuit seems the only way to assure that involvement. Lawyers out there, any comments? "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." It's actually up to the BOD to set direction. The Exec. Director is charged with carrying out the BOD's decisions. The big problem with the BOD is that there aren't enough non-DZO's with knowledge of BOD procedures who have the motivation and time to get well enough known to get elected and represent the interests of the "regular" members. Remember, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. So go out there, get signatures of 10% of the members in your region, and get on the Regional Director ballot. Then go out there and get known at all the DZ's to get your votes. If it can be done in the Western Region (I did it, and Scott Smith did it the term after I did) it should be doable in all the regions. Blue Skies! Actually hasn't Skyride already sued USPA, and Skydive AZ sued Skyride? Aren't both lawsuits still in progress? "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."

Move someplace warmer. December, 1972, Rainbow Airport @ Franklin, WI was a sheet of ice. January, 1973, everything that fit in or on top of my Pinto station wagon was on its way to CA and Elsinore! Seriously, be careful if there is any uneven ice under a seemingly flat expanse of snow. Sort of like sticking your foot in a gopher hole hidden by grass on landing. I got a spiral tib - fib from that in February 1972. Blue Skies! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."

Usually the stuff behind the INOP sticker includes the ADF. A good operation will just remove all that stuff to save weight. I remember flying some jumpers for a demo in a 206. After I let them out, ATC was giving me some headings to fly to avoid traffic. Of course, all the gyro instruments had been removed (and there was even a 337 for the removal) and I had to rely on the mag compass. Glad I teach that stuff on a regular basis to keep current! Unless like most of the planes in which I've recently been, it doesn't have an ADF! "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."

Maybe because your IFR skills were so poor when you went for your interview that the airlines figured you didn't take the time or effort to prepare. Maybe you don't like the idea of having to preflight the plane in the snow and rain. We don't jump in those conditions. Maybe because the idea of having a really "interesting" schedule doesn't appeal to you. Maybe because the idea of having to shave, remove the facial piercings, and wear clean clothes doesn't appeal to you. Maybe because the airlines won't hire you because of the "age 60" rule. Etc. Still have the "Narconon All Stars" tee shirt we got for doing a demo with him into a celebrity event. We were also doing a demo at the OC Raceway in 1979 using the same helicopter he used to jump from a few hundred feet into an airbag without a parachute. I've seen base jumpers exit lower than that!
