Wow! This is sad news! I saw Jim a handful of times back in the late 90's at Emerald Coast. He always seemed to be very soft spoken, kind, safety conscious, and humble. I'll never forget Jim as he sat right next to me flying the otter on my very first airplane ride. I was 13 then and always knew I loved the feeling of flight. After that first flight, I remember showing up for some time following-wanting to fly. They'd always have a headset available and Jim was almost always flying. I'm sure I drove him nuts more than once playing twenty questions. Such sad added proof that this sport can claim the lives of even the best. BSBD. Fly Free

ACL Surgery tomorrow... How bad is this gonna suck?
fpritchett64 replied to phreeloader's topic in The Bonfire
Nothing to do with the legs but I had my rotator cuff and a slap tear repaired with an A/C resection in April. The doc initially told me 6 months before I could put the uniform on and go back on the road. He released me back to regular duty about 2 weeks ago (3 months early) with a little persuasion. I have full range of movement back in my healing shoulder and have more range of movement in some areas than I do in my "good" shoulder. The first six weeks were definitely the worst. Trying to sleep was a bitch I managed to kick the pain meds at around week 5 and just take over the counter stuff now for any phantom pain. Although I haven't taken anything at all for pain in about a month now. It's still a long process but I'm sure the physical therapy sessions have really helped that process move along quicker. I plan to give things a few more months to be on the safe side and to finish up some financial hurdles and I'll be back in the air. It's been a few years and I miss it terribly. Your doctor may tell you like mine told me. For the first 3 months post op, you're gonna hate me. After that, you'll start realizing how all this works. Good luck with it all. -
Hahaha. Artificially persimmonated

I can't believe I have went so long without knowing about this stuff! This guy must have been the king of prank calls. Created several "Airtwardo" years ago by the Phil and Brent Show in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There are hours of his phone calls on YouTube. Below is one of my favorites. If you've never heard him before, be careful. You may just find yourself listening for hours with a sore stomach from all the laughs. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FAhh4S9R57Y The link is for the mobile version of YouTube.

Yea, his real jump numbers are somewhere under 50. The 1337 jumps listed make his small person complex feel better (1.1 WL on a 150) and gives him hope that an inexperienced jumper will listen to him.

GoPros right off of student status?
fpritchett64 replied to Tetrahedron's topic in Safety and Training
No no, not the most recent I could find. Just one I personally remember. Don't discount this incident just because its a few years old. Eta: don't forget a few posts up thread you said there had never been a fatality caused by camera. This just says a lot in what everyone else is saying about you not knowing what you don't know. -

I'm sure there have been others but this one is the first to come to mind to disprove your statement that there has never been a fatality due to a camera. I dare you to try to come up with any other reason than the camera causing this fatality. P.S. John Foster was a very experienced jumper http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=29989;search_string=John%20foster;#29989 -

Get a stripper pole. Have her perform. It'll take the edge off the pain. I like that idea. Maybe I should have her invite her friend over too. Ya' know, just for pain management purposes. It could be part of my meditation routine.

No kidding. I have my first follow up on Wednesday May 1st. I believe they'll schedule my first PT appointment then. Not looking forward to that cost though. My co-pay is $40.00/session. I have to take this stuff seriously though. Gotta get back to work as quickly as possible. I'm sure the PT will be key in a speedy and successful recovery.

Good read. Never tried the meditation. Never really put much weight into it. Surprisingly, the pain hasn't been that bad since the block wore off. I'm sure I'll feel it once I start physical therapy.

Hi 64, Quote: entertainment? Ideas? And: Quote: a wonderful fiancé Nuff said! Seems as though the answer was right in front of me. Thanks for the great advice!

Db Cooper thread and starting at page 1 and going all the way through Billy Vance's Sick and Twisted thread.

I hadn't thought about that. I'm usually not much of one for reading books but I guess I could give it another try. Thanks!!

...For the dreaded pain to begin. Had surgery today on my left shoulder due to an injury several months ago shooting my bow. Arthroscopic surgery to repair a slap tear. Ended up being a slap tear repair, rotator cuff repair, and shaved off some of my collar bone. 12 hours later and the block is starting to fade. Anticipating some hellacious pain shortly. Doc says 6 months to 1 year for full recovery. Good news... I have some good insurance, great employer, sweet pain meds, and a wonderful fiancé who is keeping my polar pack stocked with nice ice cold water. Bad news... No bowhunting this season and can't return to the streets for a long time. Anybody willing to assist with entertainment? Ideas?

Now, I'm not exactly a genius and I AM a sometimes professional smart ass, but when a cop stops me and asks me a direct question, I know enough to not start fucking with him and THAT is where it all goes south. It is pretty clear this guy, maybe while completely within his rights, was starting to fuck with the cop. He admits it. He says it right in that quote. The correct answer would have been something like, "As you can see from the pack on my back, we're on a hike. I'm carrying the rifle to protect myself from wild hogs and cougars. I ALSO HAVE A .45 ON MY LEFT HIP AND MY PERMIT TO CARRY IS IN MY POCKET." It's not until WELL into the video after handcuffs and the sergeant shows up the man ever mentions the other concealed weapon. Now, I don't know about Texas, but I believe in most states it's considered good practice to inform the cop you're carrying a concealed weapon when they first start talking to you. It's not only good practice here, but a requirement to notify LEO immediately upon being approached that you are carrying concealed.

Maybe I said something that can be misconstrued as me siding with the officer in this case. If so, that was not my intention. I posted the elements to a NC law where someone can be guilty of going armed to the terror of the public, but only if all 4 elements of the crime are met. In this guys case, as with most others' case, he doesn't seem to have met element number 2 (with the INTENT of terrifying others) and therefore shouldn't be charged with the crime. This is only hypothetically speaking as this is a NC law and this incident occurred in TX. However, if this incident occurred in the town that I work, where someone was walking down the street with an AR slung across their shoulder, our dispatchers would be slammed with 911 calls. I would be required to investigate the call for service. I would have made voluntary contact with the guy to find out what his intentions are. I would have also politely asked him to put the weapon away as he is scaring the shit out of every passer by going down the road. Ultimately, that decision would have been his and if he declined to do so, our contact would have ended there so long as no crimes were being committed. I'll admit though, we don't have any danger of large predatory animals around here. Don't forget though, the AR was not the only weapon he was carrying. He also had a .45 on his left side. Btw, a quick google search revealed an incident where a cougar attacked some horses. The game warden stated in his 11 years of experience he has never seen a cougar in the wild and that there's usually about 3 or 4 reported sightings per year. Not attacks, but sightings. Did the citizen really need an AR and a .45 for his hike down a public road with his son? I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. I hate what the citizen is having to deal with and none of the above makes it ok for him to receive the kind of attention/inconvenience and possible rights violations that he did. However, he could've also avoided the whole incident if he had just decided to leave the AR at home. Especially in this day and age where a large portion of people automatically assume the worst when they see a person with a mean black rifle.
-
Exactly! As someone else above also stated, we're not sure what may have taken place prior to the camera starting, but I can't see where the citizen was committing any crimes. With that being said, I can't see where he made the wisest decision by carrying an AR while taking a long walk down a public highway. He was bound to attract some unwanted attention. what is wrong with walking down a public with an AR? One of the most common rifles in America, it's not an unusual or an illegal weapon? Why can't he carry it? Especially if, as he said, their are cougars etc. around? I don't see anything wrong with it. However, it's not something that you commonly see and would therefore attract unwanted attention. Obviously it did in this case and a person (or multiple people) called the police about it.

I think this officer got desperate after realizing he got his hands on someone that appeared to know a little about what he was talking about. It sounded like the officer said he was arresting the guy for resisting. From all the video footage I saw, I didn't see anything that would cause me to even charge someone with that. At most, the guy was argumentative, but rightfully so.

I don't know about Texas but in NC, there is "Going armed to the terror of the public" which is a class 1 misdemeanor. Below are the 4 elements that must be met to charge someone with the crime. Elements A person guilty of this offense (1) arms himself or herself with an unusual and dangerous weapon (2) for the purpose of terrifying others and (3) goes about on public highways (4) in a manner to cause terror to the people. Element 2 would seem to be the most difficult to meet. Without being required to meet that element it would seem as though any law abiding citizen could be charged for open carrying if another citizen called in and complained of someone open carrying a firearm in public.

I wish they would spare some to the agency that I work for. Every year during annual firearms qualification, we shoot the duty ammo that we've carried all year. We're then issued new duty ammo. This past fall (September to be exact) we were not able to do that due to the shortage of the duty ammo that we carry, which is the Winchester Ranger T-series. We kept our current issue of that round and qualified with like ammo. I called Winchester just last week because I'm trying to get my hands on some of the same ammo for my off duty gun that I use for concealed carry. Winchester said 6 months and that all law enforcement dealers are currently out of stock. Luckily another dealer had plenty of stock on Speer Gold Dot ammo, which I prefer anyway.
