Thanks Likestojump. It’s amazing that a silk canopy that has been jumped recently. I’ve only ever seen one silk canopy. I was asked to pack it in a WWII chest reserve for display only. It was damaged and missing most of the lines. The canopy had a very spongy feeling to it. It was faded to a light caramel color. At least I think it was faded. I don’t know what the original color really looked like. Some of the white nylon reserves I’ve seen from the 40’s and 50’s were almost translucent and absolutely beautiful IMO.

Beatnik, what is a "Russell Lobe" canopy?
-
Where do I sign up for that? That would have been GREAT! I wonder how many people thought it was a pilot bailing out? I can see it now. The student lands and is in that semi delirious state after their first jump. Then someone runs up and shouts "Were there any other survivors?"

I was wondering what’s the oldest canopy out there that is being jumped occasionally. I know a lot of gear from the 60’s gets aired out pretty often. I have a friend who jumps a 1943 dated T-5 every so often. We put it in a military SL H/C with the dial o death and he static lines it out of a C-47. I was right behind him jumping a MC1-1C and when he landed I must have been at 3-4 hundred feet. He had all the drive of a WDI. Can you say PLF? It’s pretty cool to jump a WWII canopy out of a WWII aircraft but I said “no thanks”. The funny thing is that sometime in the past it had a 7 TU mod done to it and was dyed Pink! Somebody must have set it up for their girlfriend in the 60’s. I’ll find a pic of it and post it when I have time. We call it the pink titty. To put it in perspective this guy’s favorite canopy is a C-9 with a 4 line release. He’s gonna be 3’ shorter soon. ATW, Cael

WWII Airborne Demonstration Team C-47 Promotional Video
lucky508 replied to davidlayne's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
That is vintage footage of the towers at Benning. I jump and rig with the WWII ADT. This promo was done by a film company that we did some jumping for. We jump MC1-1B's and -1C's but have modified them from direct bag to pilot chute assist. We do have a few skinny guys that jump 28" T-7 and C-9's sometimes. I jump a PC whenever I can during training jumps. ATW, Cael -
Does anyone know who and how they filmed the low pull scene? It looks like there was no room for error on that one. Was a drop test dummy used? freaking low! ATW, Cael

Ditto from me. I just finished refurbishing a H/C for a jumbo PC. I could really use some kicker plates. I pack a lot of chest reserves and am always scrounging for them.

Cotton chest reserve pack tray/container?
lucky508 replied to lucky508's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
my question was about military chest reserves like the one Howard posted the pic of. It's intresting to see where this thread has gone. I never new any type of reserves had a sleeve. did the sleeve for reserves morph into the diaper? CK -
it looks similar to the handle on single point release system for lowering a ruck sack. The one's I used just had a white webbing strap and not a toggle type handle like this. This may be an improved and more robust version. it looks like the 550 cord keeper broke and it flew off after being pulled.

Cotton chest reserve pack tray/container?
lucky508 replied to lucky508's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I've gotten the same answer from two master riggers within the hour. Nylon parachute requirement for 180 day cycle address's ONLY the CANOPY, (Canopy, Lines & Harness it attaches to), NOT the Pack Tray. case closed. Thanks, CK -
Cotton chest reserve pack tray/container?
lucky508 replied to lucky508's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
My question is this: Does having a cotton chest reserve container change the repack cycle to 60 days if the rest of the parachute is composed of synthetic fiber? http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgFinalRule.nsf/0/659c44c7eed60e33862575440074ec0d!OpenDocument Sec. 91.307 Parachutes and parachuting. (a) No pilot of a civil aircraft may allow a parachute that is available for emergency use to be carried in that aircraft unless it is an approved type and has been packed by a certificated and appropriately rated parachute rigger-- (1) Within the preceding 180 days, if its canopy, shrouds, and harness are composed exclusively of nylon, rayon, or other similar synthetic fiber or materials that are substantially resistant to damage from mold, mildew, or other fungi and other rotting agents propagated in a moist environment; or (2) Within the preceding 60 days, if any part of the parachute is composed of silk, pongee, or other natural fiber or materials not specified in paragraph (a)(1) of this section. Thanks, Cael -
3rd Skydiving Festival, Panama, Rio Hato
lucky508 replied to ELOY3DCAMERA's topic in Events & Places to Jump
I wish I could make it. I'll be in Panama later this year. see you guys then! ATW, Cael -
Whoever it is I formally nominate them for douchebag of the year! Can I get a second? You gave $30 dollars to fund jumps for some young VETERANS returning from the sandbox and now you want it back? WTF? ATW, CK

Thanks for all the info. I can't make the month but hopefully I will next time. I can remember standing on the ramp of a C-130 with two rounds on and a static line in my hand thinking "what a waste this is" It was fun but not the same kind of fun that skydiving is! thanks, Cael

Does anyone know if this is planned to be a periodic event that will happen a few times a year or just a one or two time event? I know we can never be sure of anything but I just thought I’d ask. I think it’s a great thing for our soldiers and a great way for us to be a part of it. Thanks, Cael

Rubber Chicken vs. Real Chicken freefall pass
lucky508 replied to DrEco's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Yeah, but did the chicken make the peas? -
Thanks to Riggerbob and Jerry for the info. I think I'll sew some mesh into those drive slots. Cael

I have a 26’ Crossbow reserve from Security. I’m guessing this is the reserve that came with the complete system correct? It has no mesh in the drive slots or diaper. I have a pic of the data panel from the last time I packed it. The pic is on my other computer and I’ll post it later. I have it packed in a chest reserve. The volume is much lower than even a 24’ T-10R. Cael

anybody got an outlaw Christmas or new years jump story? Tis the season.

I’m posting this here because it is old gear and I really only frequent this form. I recently acquired an MT-1S harness container. It is light blue and has both main and reserve ripcords and cut away handle. It does not have reserve free bag and pilot chute or the main D bag and pilot chute. Does anyone have or know where I can find the manual for this system? I also acquired a MT1-S main that looks to have very few jumps on it. It is red, yellow and black. It has the data stamped on one of the ribs of the canopy. I understand it’s the same as an XL cloud. It does not have a slider on it. Does anyone know what size slider it should have? Here is some info I found about the MT-1S main. MT-1S – The main parachute is available in a 5-cell or 7-cell configuration. The chutes are ram air pressurized gliding canopies equipped with slider reefing systems. The canopy size is 270 sq ft (25 m) and has a 300 lbs (136 Kg) carrying capacity. The airfoil section is the high lift, low drag proprietary Lissamann 7808, which results in reasonably high forward speed, easy handling and docile stall characteristics. The main canopy can be safely deployed from 2,000 ft AGL up to 30,000 ft MSL and at indicated air speeds up to 150 KIAS. The guy I got it from thought it had been and Air Force rig. I don’t know why this gear that is marked with military nomenclature would be colored like this. Anybody have any ideas? I would like to put this rig into service with a 26’ lopo reserve and be able to jump it for fun with the MT-1S main or I think I may be able to fit a MK1 PC into it. The harness looks like it would be super comfortable for cross county HAHO type jumps. I’ve attached a few pics of the main and can attach some of the H/C if anyone is interested. Thanks, Cael

agree. best thread of all time. this post reminds me of a funny story. In the mid 90's I was jumping in Panama with the club there. We were getting ready to do a demo into Coronado beach. We were gearing up when at the last min Lotty, who ran club drove up and said "Coca Cola is sponsoring us put these shirts on!" They were red shirts so I just sliped mine over my read jumpsuit. One of the other jumpers took of his rig and unsipped his jumpsuit to put the t shirt on. I noiticed that he had a Baretta 9mm stuck into his shorts! I said something like "Dude, do you know someting I don't know?" He said. "Hey man, this is Panama. you never know WHERE you are going to land" Well OK then if we land out I'm landing with you! We proceeded to put 8 jumpers in a ratty old 206 and make an off shore jump run. I was 8th out and very motovated to get out as quickly as possible. All went well and we all landed on the beach and proceeded to get drunk on free booze. ATW, Cael

Rhodesia Parachuting history (Military)
lucky508 replied to nigel99's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I looked around my archives a bit and found this record of Rhodesian combat or Operational jumps as they called them. I cant remember where I found it but it's the best record I've seen. The RLI history book "The Saints" has some excellent first hand acounts of operational jumps. ATW, CK
