    Don't know how it works over there but in the UK hardly anyone pays full price up front for a phone. If you sign up to a 12 or 18 month service contract with a network the phone comes either completely free or (for a really expensive handset) very heavily subsidised. Over here is the UK too! Yes you could sign up to a contract, and instead of paying $599 up front you pay it over a year, vodafone/3/O2 etc still have to make a profit from the phone!
