  1. August 1969, 2 S/L, 3 DRCP's, 2 3 sec delays, 3 5 sec delays, 3 10 sec delays, 3 15's, 3 20's then up to "seven five" for the first 30 sec delays. BTW my first demo was my second 15 sec delay into a friend's back yard. Thank God it was a farm and a BIG back yard jumping a 28' 1.1 TU.
  2. Happy Birthday Boss! I started jumping there in 1969 and Dale and Lucinda were my instructors. Bob was a teenager and had already been jumping for a year. I wound up teaching for them for about 6 years. Dale always made the place a comfortable, Safe, laid back place to jump. Bob continues the tradition to this day. I've got lots of good memories of Dale (D-91 if I remember correctly) and always try to stop by when I'm back in NE Ohio.
  3. Naw... Didn't quit, just went back to rounds for awhile. Truth be told, I still like rounds better.
  4. This looks a LOT like the "Steve Snyder Parafoil". Back in 1970, we (Cleveland Sport Parachuting/Skydive Parkman) bought one. We flew to Steve's Ripcord Paracenter in NJ and took an all day class on how to pack. fly and land it. I was the third or fourth one there to jump it (Bill Cole was the one before me). It had the PCR system (Pilot Chute Controlled Reefing). Damned thing opened like hitting a wall and turned like a truck without power steering. I had the misfortune of flaring at 25 feet, swinging backward into the ground and earning a steel plate in my left arm. After I healed, I went back to my 7 TU and PC.
  5. Sure you could do it without the tunnel, just like we did 8, 10, and 20 ways in the 1970's. It just took a lot more time. Only 60 seconds at a time, making sure you had separation before you pulled, etc, etc. In the tunnel you get 2-5 jumps at a time without the distractions. Then you can translate that to the real world when you jump because you honed the "Muscle Memory" in the tunnel. Had we had the tunnel "In The Day" we would have built a lot more big ways faster and without the trouble. Would I have changed things? Not on a bet. I enjoy being part of the history of his sport!
  6. Hey Bill, Remember when the Grafton guys would tell a new guy that they had a demo at the prison? They'd all get out on the step and the strut, and then all get back in the plane when you exited. Lots of fun for the prison guards when an unexpected jumper landed in the "Yard" and had to try to explain why he just "Broke IN" to prison.
  7. Because of various problems (none related to landing under rounds) I don't jump anymore. I do do the tunnels and I love it. BUT... When I get to the DZ, there is an indescribable feeling that comes over me that only a Skydiver and understand. I can close my eyes and see the jump ship fly away as I settle into terminal, look for the rest of the formation and set up to dock. I still feel the rush as I track away and set up to open. The last turn onto final and the standup in the packing area (yeah, I'm still jumping rounds, but they're my memories). Anybody who asks the questions you ask, never needs to worry... You'll always be a Skydiver... Just like me. Blue Skies, Brother
  8. August 13, 1969. Cleveland Sport Parachuting in Parkman OH. Dale Gates was flying and Roy Johnnson, World Champion Style jumper was on the load. I had been hanging out there for six (long) months waiting to turn 18. Dale took us to 6600 first so Roy could leave first. He called for the "Cut", stepped out on the step, stuck his head back in and yelled back at me... "You'd better jump you SOB, I've got Twenty Bucks on you". Then he "vanished". You Better Believe I jumped! Best day of my life!
  9. I ran into Bob at Skydive Parkman (Ohio) this past weekend. Had a great time talking over the old days. He said he was heading to Mi when he left there.Just taking his time and enjoying the scenery.
  10. Hi Bill... Jim Artle here. After I mentioned that I hadn't seen you since the 70's in Parkman I got to thinking. I remembered that Dale loaned me the DZ's copy of he movie so I could dupe it to VHS to use for training. (god knows why he and Lucinda let ME teach, but...) Anyhow, I dug around in the attic and found it. It's almost pristine, but it's missing the tribute to the Lake Erie jumpers at the end. As we speak, It's being copied to DVD. Send me your address, and I'll send it to you. It's not right .that you shouldn't have a good copy of your own dammed movie. Besides, I still have a lot of respect for the man how showed me how to swoop on a Parafoil back in 1970, Too bad I broke my arm when I tried it. Be Happy Old friend jimartle@comcast.net
  11. Bill Cole, I haven't seen you since the days of "The Silent Sky" in Parkman, Ohio with Dale Gates, Roy Johnson, Row (Weedie) Irwin, and a lot of crash & burns under my old cheepo. Glad to see your name again. Keep Happy!! Jim Artle
  12. I was at SVOrlando from 31 Dec To 4 Jan and flew through the cold too. Maybe It's from jumping in NE Ohio in the winter (when I was a LOT younger), but all I needed was gloves, a fleece with a turtleneck, and a zero-P jumpsuit. the "thick" air made flying a lot easier. Then again, it just might be that anytime I can fly, is better than anytime I can't!
