  1. Given the disparity between rich and poor in north America, 2001 data: top 1% own 33.4% of the wealth next 19% own 51.0% bottom 80% own 15.5% your comment is just absurd. John, I lived in BC and I saw people on welfare living better than I was on minimum wage. I saw people in subsidized housing (who qualified for it by being on welfare) being provided with condos that I would not be able to afford to rent on the wage I earned. I saw unions supported by the NDP who acted as though they were untouchable and there was no way the average guy could get into these union jobs unless he was connected. Basically you were born into a union family or you were minimum wage. Is that really much better than the other end of the spectrum where if you are not born into a blue blood family you will be poor for life? You and I have discused this before and you should recall I support socialized health care, schooling and charities provided they are kept within a reasonable limit and they are aimed towards getting people up on thier feet rather than carrying them indefinitely. I have a few distant relatives who are career welfare and these cousins could get work if they tried, but they don't want to. That is what I resent supporting. When I refer to the extreme left I am not talking about your Democrat party or people who have compassion for the less fortunate. We in Canada have a left and right party much like you do in the US. Our "right wing" party the Conservatives are actually to the left of your Democrats. Taking that into consideration think of where our left wing party (Liberals) stands or for that matter the NDP which are to the left of our liberals and gaining strength. As has been pointed out on another thread a balance between socialism and capitalism works but the experience we have had up here is that when the extreme left gain momentum they take things to extremes and the average guy suffers. Anyway, I did not join this thread to get into a fight, I simply wanted to point out to KW that blanket acceptance of the states power to tax and redistribute is also dangerous. We can question the right of the state to search us or monitor us we should also be allowed to question how much money the state takes from our paycheck and where it goes. 2. Why is that bad? It's not entirely bad if kept in check. The problem is that while redistribution of wealth starts with ensuring that the truly unfortunate do not starve and that poor kids don't die on the steps of a hospital it ends up spiraling out of control. The extreme left feel the need to penalize the successfull so that they are only marginally better off than those who sit on their asses. Why should anyone really bust thier ass if they can be just as well off (or in some cases better off) sitting around and doing nothing. 3. I bet when you found out about his weak sentence you wished you did shoot him. That is the problem with the weak justice system. You should not have felt the need to leave the neighborhood. The system should have done enough with this guy that you would have felt confident that it would not happen again. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  4. Damn that is a frustrating feeling. I woke up once to find out that someone had burgled my place as I slept. That hurt! To think I was there and in theory could have had that one in a million opportunity to catch them in the act and there I was snoring like a bear, fucking clueless to what was happenning right downstairs. I still have not gotten over that one! My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  5. A shorter sentence was not available to the court; Life/10 is the minimum. I didn't know thst. Not sure. It does seem like the system is trying to make an example of the guy, which is acceptable to the extent that they convicted him and sentenced him. Putting him in a medium security prison exposes him to violence and possible sexual assault does it not? I am not sure why the courts feel that he belongs in that environment. 6. I'm not sure I agree. This was not a case of assisted suicide. Where do we draw the line on an individual deciding on behalf of another person to end that persons life? Given the specifics of the case I feel that the courts had to send a clear message, but he should have been given a shorter sentence and at an easier institution. Part of the problem is that I do not know enough about severe cerebral palsy to know whether his daughter was actually in terrible pain. Was it compassion? Or was it a convenient solution to a burdensome situation? If it was the latter then life would be appropriate. I think he was genuinely motivated by compassion. Do you think individuals should have the right to end another persons life if they feel that person is in pain? I do not feel comfortable with that. I fear where it could lead. 7. OK. I cannot possibly understand what it is like because I have never been there and I fully acknowledge that I am being a monday morning quarterback. I do support doctor asisted suicide. If a person wishes to die because they are in unbearable pain then we should have legal means for that person to do so in a painless manner. My reservation about euthanasia is where the line would be drawn. Would it become used as a tool to dispose of inconvenient patients? Patients who's treatments cost too much? What if the patient does not want to die? Either way, I do sympathise with any individual in his situation (and yours) who comes to the day where they feel the need to make that decision. I personally feel he should be paroled but I threw this out here because I often find on SC that some posters say things that drastially change the way I look at things I had strong opinions about. 8. http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/latimer/ http://torontosun.com/Comment/Commentary/2007/12/07/4712544-sun.html I'm really conflicted on this one. On one hand I feel we cannot allow people to commit euthanasia so it was right that he went to prison. On the other hand, however misguided his actions were he did so out of compassion for his daughter and he has done time for it so why can he not be considered for day parole? I doubt he is a threat to society compared to the creatures we routinely parole out. The parole board did not find he was sufficiently remorsefull because he stuck to his position that he acted to end her pain. At least he was honest in front of the board and spoke his mind rather than what they want to hear. How many career gang bangers or repeat pedophiles get paroled yet again because they end up in front of a parole board again and convincingly say something to the effect of "I regret the pain my actions have caused and am ready to become a productive member of society" and apparently really mean it this time. I am curious to hear other opinions on this. Again I am not saying that he shouldn't have gone to jail. I am just unsure as to whether denying him parole was the right decision. 9. But...but...but...they're disadvantaged minorities. Clearly it is societies fault for the oppression they have suffered that forced them into this act. Of course it can't be a hate crime; only whites commit those. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  10. I'm really not much of a mechanic so I obviously missed that point. I guess if I knew more about cars I could understand why everyone seems to feel he gave bad advice. Oh well. 11. I don't see the problem? He sounds knowledgable in automechanics and gave sound advice. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  12. Uhmmm....no. Never been the chauvinistic type. I feel that either males or females on average can equally do the job but for some reason when a female is put in charge of me I piss her off. This is not the case outside of an authority based scenario, only when they are my boss. Some people actually find it amusing that I have this "talent". No biggie, if I work for a female I just tend to try to not get noticed. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  13. Nothing against female bosses but I have rarely worked well with a female boss because usually I piss them off. Something about me tends to piss female bosses off and I can't figure it out (and thus can't change it) so I generally prefer to work with guys. 17. As much as I would love to see Hatton knock that cocky arrogant smirk off of mayweathers face it is simply not going to happen. Hatton is excellent but mayweather is too damn fast. He made De La Hoya (granted an old De La Hoya) look like George Foreman. 18. If you have roommates would it not be better to use the bedroom instead of the couch? And nothing they did in the past forewarned you of this possibility? Uh yeah...I guess so. So all of you have anger management issues? Get a motel room or get better roommates or get your own place. 19. Sounds right. When I read in the paper about some criminal who has done something terrible to an innocent person I think about how I would love to have the guy alone so I could torture him to death slowly. The truth is I would probably be scared shitless and even if I wasn't I could probably never have the stomach to actually do that to someone. So yes so long as it is harmless fantasy I see nothing wrong with it. I don't think it makes me evil to think such things. 20. No, the firearm should be used in the same situation that you should use your firearm. Granted using tazers as a compliance tool when frustrated with a situation is unreasonable. It is not a cattle prod. Perhaps in a situation that has escalated to a point where you are in danger but not yet at the point where you need to use lethal force; like the one described by skycop. 21. When I hear things like this what kills me is the "why" part of it. What is the motive behind not acknowledging something like that? Why is that not front page news? What exactly is going on here? My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

  24. Nobody is squeaky clean. Europeans do very much the same thing every Good Friday. I am not sure what you refer to when you say that people in europe look at past wrongs by others as a justification for current wrongs while celebrating good friday but I am curious to hear what this is about. Also what does this have to do with my argument? Not being confrontational, you honestly have me perplexed here. 25. But irony can be carried from one generation to the next? It almost implies that americans who comlain about immigration are hypocrytes for complaining about someone doing to them what thier ancestors did to someone else. I do not have the dictionary with me but I do not see irony there as I understand the definition of it. If I mayself had been party to displacing the natives I suspect that irony might be an appropriate term in this case. I realize you mean no harm, but I wish to quote DZJ's comment in an unrelated thread about comments like that which are thrown around untill they become accepted as normal comments. Now he was referring to violence in general, but I draw parallels between what he has said about casual comments about violence and the willingness of many people to casually refer to the current generation of americans of european descent as being the wrongdoers who are getting their just desserts. It scares me how casually many non-european immigrants refer to "us" as the ones who hurt their people in the past and casually justify wrongs against "us" but then say they didn't mean it literally. Almost every day I hear some wrong against Americans or white people being justified casually because "of what they did to group X" way back in histroy. It is becoming all too common.
