I work for a large company tied to the oil companies who are tied to those large SUVs that consume so much energy and fuel. The high fuel prices are a double edge sword the way I see it. Yes your company is making money and you and I are still employeed and not hurting for a job. The American car makers on the other hand or going to start to hurt. Which will put people in unemployment lines. Prices of vehicles will rise. Inflation will creep back into the economy more and more as these prices stay where they are or god forbid go much higher. This is a good thing for the import car makers because they've not tied their markets to the SUV and the large vehicles. I'm a very american person and I like to buy american when I can. It's getting to the point it's harder and harder to do since NAFTA, oil prices etc.. The american company has priced itself out of my market for most everyday things. Now I'm leaning and actually looking to purchase an inexspensive import with a small gas mileage vehicle. I won't go as far as Bill and look into a Hybrid ONLY because the cost of the purchase is prohibitive to my wallet. I would if I could look at a hybrid. But I can get a gas guzzling 35mpg Toyota or Mazda for about $5k less then a hybrid. To me it's all the monthly payments stack up. I live paycheck to paychech and sometimes don't make it that far. No your not the only one. I was actually very very close to buying one awhile back. The only thing I was a bit skeptical about was it's base HP at 110 or less. It's the 1.6 litre 4 cylinder engine. Would be awesome gas mileage. I was more worried about driving in Houston traffic where to merge into traffic you close your eyes and punch the gas pedal. When I test drove it the automatic was a bit sluggish, the 5spd had a bit more gettup and go because you decided when to shift. I would have burned up the clutch and probably blown the itty bitty engine in about 2 months. I am now seriously thinking about a new "smaller" vehicle. My Chevy p/u is kickin my ass with fuel costs. I'm leaning towards the Toyota Matrix or a Mazda m3 wagon. Both get really good mileage and have some utility to them, being as their both hatchbacks. No they don't. And their being marketed to the "highschool - college" crowd not the "homeys" color of skin has nothing to do with their marketing strategy. I've looked into them alot and I'm a 38yo white man. You can however totaly option them out with the speakers, stereo, rims, and all kinds of packages. Just adds to the price. The one I was leaning towards and didn't buy was almost $25k .. but it was pretty much tricked out. For a base model you can normally find them $16k or less.
