Preface: i dont claim to be a specialist or expert on the subject, but i have done extensive research or others findings and results for various reasons Anyways, DU is most often rendered from the waste of enriching natural uranium, it is the porting of Uranium that isnt radioactive (or atleast has a much lower occurance of the radioactive isotope), contrary as to what was said earlier there is such thing as non radio active uranium, it is just that any sample of uranium is likely to contain both radio active and non radioactive isotopes, with the majority being non-radioactive. HEU (highly enriched uranium) is usuually cansidered to be a sample with higher than 5% of the total being the radioactive isotope, this is usually reserved as weapons grade uranium, it is a long expensive process to enrich uranium to this extent EU (enriched uranium) is uranium that has undergone the enrichment process but contains less that or equal to 5% of the radioactive isotope, most commonly used in nuclear reactors and in the so-called dirty bombs (aka briefcase bombs, which are far different than the nuclear weapons as we think of them, they simply spread a radioactive material over a large area, usually about 1-4 city blocks, rendering that and the surrounding areas hazardous.) DU (depleted uranium) commonly caries "trace" ammounts of the radioactive isotope. the government, as far as i know, has never released numbers, but many different studies have their own numbers that range a great deal. the short story is that if the DU tipped bullets are low enough in the radioactive isotope the alpha and beta particles that are emitted are far to few to cause real damage, especially when they are emmited in a small area and often end up lodged in a tank (which neither alpha or beta particles could escape, not even the scary gamma radiation would penetrate a tanks shell). If the numbers are high enough and the DU bullet lands in a fairly heavily populated area such as a house or city square, then some problems could be found, but would not be apparent for a couple years considering the low dosage per unit time that anyone would be picking up. even then the dispercement of the particles happens so rapidly the chances of it causeing a problem are slim to none. as for the increase in rates of cancer, there are many possible factors. Causes for cancer have been recorded in different studies ranging from increased stress to radioactive fallout. Personally if i were to guess the cause of increased rates of cancer i would go with the carcinogens that are release during the explosions of different ordinances, and the increased dust inhalation (causes irritation of the lung tissue, which is a proven cause of cancer) due to the explosions and warfare (farfetched but scientificly proven). In summation of most of my research, the "horror" of DU bullets is caused by the stigma associated with anything uranium (eventhough people didnt mind when they had uranium in different paints, natural urainum infact) and too many factors would hinder any real threat (esp when weighed against their neccesity and effectiveness). Just to sorta hit this home in air beta particles are dispersed in approx 100 ft. alpha particles are disperced in approx 3 feet. Beta particles can penetrate approx 5mm of human tissue, and alpha particles cant penetrate the top 2 layers of your skin. over 70% of DU bullets are recovered and reused from inside destroyed tank shells, and the other 30% are unlikely to be fired into an area that has any substantial population density, all of which minimized the danger to virtually Nil. If you wanna ask me anything else or discuss it anymore, give me a PM and i can direct you to some great legal studies and scientific studies regarding DU use.

anyone got a good way to curb carb cravings?
sixtysevengt5oo replied to waltappel's topic in The Bonfire
the reason you are craving carbs, is mainly because there are a vital necesity for your body to function, i.e. if you work out 5 times a week and try to cut cabs to a minimum you are doing more harm than good. The best way to become really lean and tone is to eat lean protein, and a good ammount of it, and lots or carbs, while working out alot, if you truely work out 5 times a day, you wont eat enough cabs to cause you to gain weight (atleast bad weight, i.e. fat) it will allow you to have a more efficient workout and you will burn fat faster and build muscle faster than trying to cut carbs, where your body begins to digest itself, not to mention what will happen when you slow your workouts or start eating cabs again (btw you will gain the weight back very fast) Moral of the story the best way to cut the craving is to give into it, its more healthy that way anyways -
G.W. Bush Top Ten accomplishments
sixtysevengt5oo replied to funjumper101's topic in Speakers Corner
I think the most impressive thing he has done has been keeping himself from getting shot. There are enough people in this country that have been screwed over tremendiously by him, more than enough to find one that is on the edge enough to go man hunting. Other than that he has started a downward spiral that will take drastic measures to counter-act. Not only did the economy spill to lows, but now more of the world than ever hates us. We have more enemies than before, and an ever increasing anti-american sentiment even from our few allies. Threats of massive destruction are more apparent, and we have become the most hipocrytical nation on earth (as if we werent before, but still). He has managed to fool most people in this great nation that he is commited to small government, and yet has taken on a bigger goernment budget than any other president in history. He has made the populus believe that there is a direct competent link between 9/11, iraq, iran, and Islam in general, of which none are true. He has distroyed a country that housed a demonic leader, while overlooking and not acting on other countries that have far worse demonic leaders and governments. He has made the populus believe that it is ok for us to be able to kill everyone else, but not ok for anyone else to be able to do the same. So as i see it his truely greatest accomplishment is finding a way to blind everyone, and be able to lead us along like mindless little sheep, and have virtually no one react. As i see it we are doomed untill we stop following him off a cliff. -
does anyone know where one might be able to download this video, considering it isnt on skydivingmovies.com

can a herc takeoff and land on that runway?

leeland pass, often thought of as one of the most dangerous driveable mountain passes in the US has a max downhill pitch of 11% and i doubt if that even last for a mile, if you get to a 79 mph descent in a car you have bigger things to worry about than a cypress firing

its easy to describe, its called resistance, its the same idea as a crack addict, at the begining 1 line does the trick, and then it take more and more and more, till he reaches the point that he cant do any more without o/ding, and he does that much without getting the same high he used to, so he tries something different, maybe even a little more dangerous, or maybe less dangerous, just different. Its hard to believe that jumping out of a plane would become boring in any way, just as its tough to believe that someone wouldnt get high of of 5 lines. *dont take this as a post telling you to do drugs or n e thing drug doing related, its just a metaphore*

Im sorry i have to come out and say it, YOU ARE A F**KING moron. for one it isnt a society wide issue, the majority of the people aren't comiting crimes, rioting, killing, or even yelling JIHAD, unlike many ignorant a**holes such as yourself seem to think. Do you know any one islamic, do you even know an islamic sympathist. Untill you do and realize that it isnt all of them, it isnt half of them, it isnt even a significant portion of them, stop talking, stop being a bigot, and stop making yourself look like a hard headed, wont listen to anyone who doesnt agree with me or what i believe in, redneck, sob. Dont comment on things that you have no knowlege about. And as far as the US screwing up the situation, lets mark all the things that we have done to piss off our middle eastern buddies. first we created the UN which arbitrarily agreed that palestine OUGHT to belong to the Jews, why we dont know, so we displaced millions in order to give the holocaust victims what they wanted (agreed a good cause, but about the worst way possible to attain the end) second we arm the newly formed state of israel so that they can fend off all attemps at invasion, which they do for the most part third we completely ignore every international violation that israel commits via the mossad, or invasion of another country, torture, etc. more recently we side with the israelis in every confrontation between the palestinians and jews, even though more mass murder is commited on the part of the jews (last civilian death count i could find came from and international health organization at 2200 + innocent palestinians dead, 842 innocent israelies dead, this was a long while ago but i don know that the gap has further widend) and lastly every major conflict from the palestinians is blamed on the islamic faith even though 25% of the palestinians, and an equal number of those commiting the crimes in the region are christian. we accuse a religion and a way of life instead of militant organizations that dont represent the majority. more muslims live in indonesia than the entire middle eastern region, yet we dont see car bombs, and insurgents there, or atleast we dont hear about them, so it cant be a religious thing. The only reason that it is even able to been seen that way is because the region is primarily muslim, and we portray muslims as barbaric militant hordes. Maybe world war 1 and 2 where those damn militant christians, most of the people fighting the war were christian after all right. or maybe the crusades where the damn militant christians, that seems resonable to say maybe tienemen (sp?) square was all those damn bhudists, those crazy peace seeking, murderous fools Maybe the India Pakistan conflict is simply hindus and muslims fighting, instead of a territorial fight between two nations, no it couldnt be that could it. So a note to all of those that jump to hasty generalization, stop being morons, every time there has been genocide commited it started the same way, is that what YOU want, to just kill all the muslims, sounds like a good idea.

Majority of Muslims = Complete Idiots...thoughts?
sixtysevengt5oo replied to ViperPilot's topic in Speakers Corner
Ok ok....but what about the fact that in the last half century, practically the only group bringing violence, hate, rage, etc. by way of words AND action in this large of scale has been Muslims? When's the last time you saw thousands of Christian's rioting? When's the last time Jews, Budhists, even Atheists, massed to spew violence and hate against others for no good reason? I'll go even further after reading this one. The last time i saw christians, riots against vietnam, riots agaisnt the WTO in seattle, and in Cancun. The last time i saw jews, every day the same as muslims in the same place, just not publicised, the last time i saw budhists, the protest in chine from the college age against thier government, also not publicised. By no means are the muslims the only ones being violent and protesting, not in the last century, not in the last deccade, not in the last year. Before making a very broad statement make sure you know what the f you are talking about first. -
Majority of Muslims = Complete Idiots...thoughts?
sixtysevengt5oo replied to ViperPilot's topic in Speakers Corner
What exatly qualifies as a large number, 1%, 2%, 50+% Just because there are SOME does not incite most, or even a large portion. I suppose that because there are the back panthers (SOME being known for violence) then a large potion of Blacks are Idiots. Or maybe because there is such thing as the KKK, a large number of protestants are idiots. Or maybe because there is there are militant russians and french, and english, and spanish, and jewish and muslime, and catholic, and hindu, and janeist, and budist, and anarchist, and every other sect that has ever had a "large" violent faction, that we must all be idiots. The fact is the only people who are idiots are those that single out groups differnt from themselves, and blame them for doing things differently, and calling them idiots. STOP BEING SUCH A BIGGOT! -
what are cool (or uncool) skydiving dreams you've had?
sixtysevengt5oo replied to unformed's topic in The Bonfire
i Keep on having the recurring dream of a malfunctioning main (differnt mals each time) and then when i go to cut away and deploy the reserve, i end up pulling the reserve handle, not far enough to deploy but just out of the keeper, realising the fatal error i was about to make, and then reach to cut away first, and then deploy just fine, i always wake up right after -
When i jumped my first pack job i didnt even remember that it was me that had packed it, and just to brag a lil, i thought to myself under canopy, "Man that was a really nice opening" i guess thats kinda good cause i wasnt worried about jumpiung my own pack job cause i didnt know it was, and now i dont mind jumping my own.

OK so if there are three different places trying to meet at an equitible place centerville is it, unfortunately the only reason anyone knows where or what Centerville is, is because it is basically the center of the trip between dallas and houston, if you are tring to find a half way point between dallas and college station Waco is the best, approx. 1.5 to 2 hours from both places, and there really isnt even a mexican food restaurant there, there is a place that is like a hotdog stand that has really good tea, and a fast food joint in a gas station, a DQ and a Jack in the Box, its basically a pit stop on the Dallas --> Houston or Houston --> Dallas Marathon

Man, it must be hard being a Democrat...
sixtysevengt5oo replied to peacefuljeffrey's topic in Speakers Corner
What the "left" is saying, in fact has always said, and beleieved, is that most americans want what the democratic party offers, unfortunately most of them arent politically active enough to know what it is that the democratic party offers. If you were to ask an of the homeless families living in the ghetto, chances are you would find that they would like lower taxes a stronger welfare system and more equal distribution of wealth and freedom (different subject all together), but most of them probably couldnt tell you which party would try to make those things happen. Secondly what is the one thing that is most feared by citizens. The unknown, change, making things different then they are now. If it aint broke dont fix it is how most americans think, they just dont realize how broke it really is, and opt for the regressive non-responsive republican party, over trying something new that might work or might fail. Thirdly The republican party is very smart in that they know how to garner support through fear, fear of the outside world, fear of people of a different religion or language, fear of a state in the middle east having the ability to use nuclear weapons, when we are the biggest hippocrits, believing that we are the god chosen police of the world. When you see all these facts, lack of political knowledge, fear of change and dominearing with fear, coupled with the fact that only about 20% of the population actually votes in any given election, it is a very logical assumption that the people actually want what the "left suggests" but opt to vote otherwise. -
Dropzones with Medivac based on airport

Im not positive but i believe there is a medical chopper at Skydive aggieland, i work out there but im not sure if it is a medvac or not, you'd have to ask aggiedave or someone else from there -
just on the whole statistics thing, if you consider that there are (hypothetically) 1 million jumps recorded in a given year, and there are 10 deaths, then the ratio is 1/100,000, if we assume this the be the risk of dying on a skydive then there is no compoundment when more than one skydive is made. each and every skydive is statistically independant of another, there is no reason that if you made 100,000 skydives, that you would die once. In short EVERY skydive that you make, you have a one in 100,000 chance of dying. What you are alluding to is that everytime you jump you are more or less tempting fate, eventually you will find that 1 out of 100,000. but by making 100 skydives your chances of dying are not somehow 1/1000, cause then someone that made 1000 jumps has a 1/1000 chance of dying, so why arent they dead. unless you meant to say that everytime you take 100 jumps you have a 1/1000 chance of dying. and if you take the avg. drive time of any trip taken by a citizen (i believe it was 12 min) and the reported statistic of dying if you take a 12 min drive, skydiving is less dangerous than driving...ever.

Democracy vs "Islamic Fundamentalism"
sixtysevengt5oo replied to sixtysevengt5oo's topic in Speakers Corner
Attempts by a segment of society, ie the ACLU and Hollywood among others, to censure Christians. The more they attempt to remove Christianity from the public eye the more the Christian Fundamentalist Movement will grow. exactly, speaking freely and acting freely is a fundamental aspect of democracy, any atempt to silence or quell someone, is an act agiants true democracy (so long as the that person isnt infringing on other peoples rights to do so). So yes by not promoting democracy fendamentalism of all sorts will rise. Also i think that by sending a message here, that we want real democracy not just what is best for the US will send a stong signal to the rest of the world, that we are in it for everyone, not just ourselves. -
Democracy vs "Islamic Fundamentalism"
sixtysevengt5oo replied to sixtysevengt5oo's topic in Speakers Corner
So if you've been watching the news recently you might have heard about the rising support for a fundamentalist group in Egypt during the current elections. The US had pressured Egypt to be more democratic and once they did the people began to support the new Party which is said to be fundamentalist, which the white house basically blames for all the terrorism, and the current egyptian president refused to allow the islamic undamentalists to vote. So what are we to do, pressure for democracy or back egypt and stop a new islamic fundamentalist state? -
How much do winds really push you in freefall
sixtysevengt5oo replied to tdog's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
the idea of avg. the direction and wind speed to find your spot is for a simple estimate, so that you have an idea of where to get out, its not meant to be exact. All this high tech math is slightly pintless unless you plan on eventless dive, and opening a round main that you cant direct. In both freefall and canopy you can control where you are going to a certain extent, find a general spot, say 1/2 mile in diameter (or radius if you have enough wind), and jump control yourself the rest of the way. -
breathing troubles...?
sixtysevengt5oo replied to speedylisa's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
no they are tilting your head back because you ought to be looking out towards the horrizon, most people look strait down the first couple of jumps, it also tends to help your arch a little if you look up, and the view is a hell of a lot cooler than the ground that seems to be still.
