In general terms yes. Its very difficult to bring a lawsuit in New Zealand due to personal injury or death. To involve an equipment manufacturer you would need to gross negligence. To the best of knowledge, there has not been any such lawsuit involving any equipment manufacturer in the last 30 years, i.e. since universal ACC scheme was enacted. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlAWodtw3ps Skip to 7:40 Not to rain on anyone's parade, but this does not appear to be video of the original jump under discussion - For all we know these two could both be experienced wingsuit pilots? For me the AAD is strictly a backup device, and I'd rather it failed to open the reserve, than opened it at the wrong time (e.g. door opening) or stopped me from using my reserve handle. If it does nothing and I die, than thats probably my fault, this is a risk I'm much more comfortable with than it faulting and killing me. my bad , I wouldn't use an AAD/Rig combination where a cutter failure would stop me from opening the reserve manually. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Personally I wouldn't use any brand of AAD where a cutter failure could stop me manually opening the reserve, i.e. on my rig the cutter must be below the reserve. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

?It shows percentage, so yes both graphs average the same? Its the difference between the graphs that is significant. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

If its not OK to turn the electricity off, then one thing to think about is what happens if it turns itself off - fuses blow, circuit breakers open. This could be because of a fault inside the building or external events such as lightning. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

There seem to be two completely different versions of what happened here. Regardless of which one is correct, posting this on DZ.com was the wrong approach. Next time I would suggest that you HTFU and have it out with the person concerned there and then. Posting your problems with Hans in a public internet forum makes you seem like a whinger. This thread is likely to affect your chances of getting work both at this dropzone and at others. If I was a DZO, I wouldn't use anyone whose approach to solving problems was to post them on DZ.com or facebook..... Cocky/arrogant skydivers.

Problem is that once you have decided someone is an asshole, then that's the ways you treat them and...they treat you..Have you ever changed your point of view from that 1st 2 second one? The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein -
I'm also aware of an incident where after the last jumper exited a mat flew out the door and jammed the elevator. Luckily the pilot had enough control to land the plane without elevator control. Yeah, but until you have that first cutaway, you do wonder whether you will be able to do it or will you freeze/panic/whatever? I sure was happy when I found that all the practise touches/pulls meant that when the shit actually hit the fan a few jumps ago, everthing went by the book without conscious thought :-) I was beginning to think I might never need to actually cutaway. personally, given the number of canopy collisions, I'd go with something that's easy to see in most circumstances over something that looks good, but hey WTF do I know? The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

I didn't read anything into what you wrote, I simply quoted you. In any event, understanding the written word requires reading, so not sure what you are trying to say? The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Actually you replied to someone who said "Turning 180 degrees at the end of a tracking dive should NEVER be done" by saying "So on a 12-20 way track group you want all them to track forward". It looks like you might need to reread what was written. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Many thanks for the work that went into the material you have at this link. I used it recently when staff at my DZ told me that in low winds free fliers should exit before RW. Thanks to the information you provided, this policy has now been changed to RW should go before free fliers.

Yes, but I'm not going to share it. That has nothing to do with this thread. Why not? It seems to me that it has everything to do with this thread? On the one hand you say:"Sub 500-jump jumper under small higher performance canopy since approx 100 jumps. " and on the other hand you say "That has nothing to do with this thread" It would be useful to know what you regard as "smaller/higher performance" Some would say a safire II at WL 1.2 meets your criteria, for others its a crossfire at WL 1.6?? More information would be useful. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Congratulations to all involved - great effort. Given the discussion here and seeing the Sydney Morning Heralds headline 'Australasia 1, Slovakia 0' its time to rename this the "Australasian Record". That increases the percentage to 92%. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Am I wrong? What should I do or have done?
strop45 replied to AdamUSN's topic in Safety and Training
If you assume that you need 300 feet separation between jumpers in a group, then the 10 way group needs to track for 485 feet, the 8 way group needs to track for 390 feet while the 2 way group only need 150 feet. I guess the question is: "is extra throw generated by the 10 way group being slower than the 2 way group sufficient to make up for the extra 240 feet of additional tracking distance"? Can a wind powered vehicle travel down wind, faster than the wind?
strop45 replied to shropshire's topic in The Bonfire
Thanks for that, it makes sense to me now. In practice, I wonder what limits a vehicles capability to sail close hauled downwind and therefore what is the best angle to choose to give best VMG if sailing from point A to point B where B is directly downwind of A. I guess it is related to highest angle the boat can point upwind, albeit that boat speeds, sail efficiency etc etc are different upwind to downwind. I also wonder if this means that boats which use spinnakers are not capable of this level of performance since when sailing this close to the wind downwind, the relative wind is opposed to the direction of travel. Can a wind powered vehicle travel down wind, faster than the wind?
strop45 replied to shropshire's topic in The Bonfire
Understood and agreed, but I thought you and Kallend were saying that by travelling at an angle to the wind e.g. 45 degrees, a convectional yacht could exceed the wind speed in the downwind direction. To put some numbers on it, ignoring fricition - if the wind is 10 ft/sec and you travel downwind at 45 degrees to the wind, I believe that the maximum boat speed is (10*2^0.5) = 14.1 ft/sec, i.e. 10 ft/sec in the downwind vector. Once you go faster than 14.1ft/sec, the wind hits the front of the sail and slows you down. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein
