That is what my 13 year old son said to me one morning looking at my bloodied body from the night before. Well I just got back from Tommy’s wake. As usual there are many feelings rolling around inside. Tom I will miss you, but I know that when my time comes, that your light will be one of those burning brightly to help guide my way. Try not to use up all your fuel before then, as I know the crew you are hanging with now and they are not such good examples, that’s why I loved all of you that are there waiting. I was able to spend a few moments with Tom’s family before things began to pick up and wanted to let those of you who asked, know that I shared your love of Tom with them and I know they appreciated the thoughts of yours even though you could not be there. I was also able to share a few moments with Tom’s friends from Byron. I wish my schedule would allow me to see you all again tomorrow but it doesn’t. Remember that if there is anything that I can do to help you all I am here for you. I look forward to the day when we can get together to share a few drinks and memories of Tom with laughter rather than tears. I promise that I will find the time to do that with you all. I am a bag and sometimes it takes me awhile to follow up on my promises, but I always do. Ilea, I know that at times like these words can seem so shallow, but one day the pain will lessen, the hollow spot will remain but the pain will not be so bad. That is when Tom will have given you the strength and courage to love life again. From everything described both jumpers were in a "proper" pattern. The issue truly seems to be that a dear old friend made a mistake and did not properly clear his air before initiating his turn. It has always been low "man" has the right of way. Not bigger/smaller, faster/slower, but lower. Like it or not it is one of the "rules of the road" that we live by. He did do something that Henry and I told him some time ago "if you do fuck up just don't take anyone with you." He did that and nothing more. I'll miss him. Well that last photo is the way I remember my young friend. Yeah I remember when he was a young pup jumper. He was hanging out under the arm of another dear friend who is no longer with us. He packed for me to earn some jumping cash and I used the basement at his apartment to crash more than once. We probably showed him some crazier times than we should have, but damn it was fun. Soft spoken but caring, when you could understand what he was saying. My heart goes out to all of you who came to know him after he left this part of the country, and those that knew him from here. Its kinda bringing a tear to my eye thinking about him even though we have not seen each other for about two years now. Times like these remind me how important it is to always stay in touch, you just never know when you won't be able to again. I'm personally against the roadblock theory that we are removing DD's from the road. I'll give you a real life example: I was driving to my place fron the ex's one evening with the kids for the weekend. We were following a car whose driver was obviously impaired (from what I haven't ny idea), but they could not stay in one lane on a two lane highway. They drove one oncoming car off the road at which time I called 911 from the car and reported the vehichle and license number. I continued to follow and watch waiting for an accident. Followed them for fifteen minutes until I had to turn towards home. Never saw a response from the authorities. Funny thing is that five minutes later I pulled into a curbside "safety checkpoint" where I was checked for everything and had the big light shined in my eyes several times and asked why I kept turning my eyes away from the light. Why were they spending time here when I just called to report a truly dangerous situation. I'm not cop bashing here, I come from a cop family and respect them. I do have a problem with the way they have to perform these checks to satisfy certain groups who feel they have a better answer (MADD) which is to treat everyone like a criminal instead of justly dealing with the real offenders (who by the way are statistically repeat offenders). Enforce the laws where they need to be, that's all I'm saying. BTW, I don't drive after drinking, I tend to drink where I am going to be staying. I would go so far as to say(shudder, I cant believe I'm saying this) SAFETY FIRST. Whenever dealing with explosve elements, especially if you have not been properly trained (ok so much for the responsible Rainbo). Lets start by not trying to create fuel/air bombs in an uncontrolled environment. You do not need to be trying to make hydrogen for what you want to do. Acetylene (readily available if you even try to look) will do the job quite nicely it is much more stable until you are ready to make it go boom. We used to launch these sometimes at the FB convention and they will wake folks up. Big rubber punching ball and some hemp twine (a goodly length, test burn it vertically first to get a feel for the burn time).
