Ah yes, Fred Phelps and his Westboro "Baptist Church." Media whores, cloking hatred under the 1st Amendment-Friendly guise of Religion. If the media would not cover them, they'd lose their fuel for further perversion of the Bible. Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.

Are you concerned about your buddy suing you ? No, more concerned about pissing off a friend. But it is an entry-level job, so... I dunno. Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.

Ozzy went on record saying he was so shitfaced he had no clue it was the Alamo. Hell, I once puked in a potted plant at Planet Hollywood in South Beach, Miami, (in front of a Cop), and don't even remember getting back to the hotel, so I can say I know how Ozzy felt. Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.

A question on employment ethics: I just got offered a job thru a staffing agency doing credit analysis and data entry at a Mortgage company inDowners Grove, about 25 minutes from home. it's hourly, ~$15/hr, no bennies. Starts on Tuesday. The guy who was my POC at the staffing agency is the brother of a buddy from elementary & high school, and a friend of mine also. Now the Chicago Mercantile Exchange called me twice on a resume I sent them--once to flesh out details of my work experience, and a second time to schedule an interview for a Margin Analyst. The interview appt is Monday. Here's my conundrum(sp?): If the Merc offers me a job, it'll be better pay, full benefits. I'm going to start at the mortgage company on Tuesday, but if I am offered the job at the "Merc," it would mean quitting the job my buddy at the staffing agency hooked me up with. Would it be ethical to quit after a week to go to the better position? I've wanted to get into Securities/Commodities, as I am law school-bound, and this'd be a great place to intern in after my 1L year, and to work as a Lawyer at afterwards. Also, I haven't mentioned my intended departure to law school (August 2006) to any potential employer, as there's no guarantee I'm going to get accepted, and I don't want potential employers to refuse me based on something that may not materialize (law school acceptance). Is it ethical to abruptly quit the low paying no bennie job for the better one, one I wouldn't mind staying in if LS doesn't admit me? Thanx. Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.

The Bird of the Day is...The Cassowary. Cassowaries (genus Casuarius) are very large flightless birds native to the tropical forests of New Guinea and northeastern Australia. Some nearby islands also have small cassowary populations, but it is not known if these are natural or the result of the New Guinea trade in young birds. They are frugivorous; fallen fruit and fruit on low branches is the mainstay of their diet. They also eat fungi, snails, insects, frogs, snakes and other small animals. Lifespan is thought to be about 40-50 years. Cassowaries (from the Malay name kesuari) are part of the ratite group, which also includes the emu, rhea, ostrich, moa, and kiwi. There are three species: Southern Cassowary C. casuarius of Australia and New Guinea. Dwarf Cassowary C. bennetti of New Guinea and New Britain. Northern Cassowary C. unappendiculatus of New Guinea. The Northern and Dwarf Cassowaries are not well known. All cassowaries are usually shy, secretive birds of the deep forest, adept at disappearing long before a human knows they are there. Even the more accessible Southern Cassowary of the far north Queensland rain forests is not well understood. The Southern Cassowary is the second-largest bird in Australia and the third-largest remaining bird in the world (after the ostrich and emu). Adult Southern Cassowaries are 1.5 to 1.8 m (5½ feet) tall and weigh about 60 kilograms (130 pounds). They have a bony casque on the head that is used to batter through underbrush, making them the only armoured bird in the world. Females are bigger and more brightly coloured. A cassowary's three-toed feet have sharp claws; the dagger-like middle claw is 120 mm (5 inches) long. They can run up to 50 km/h (32 mph) and jump up to 1.5 m (5 feet). They are good swimmers. Normally cassowaries are very shy but when disturbed can lash out dangerously with their powerful legs. During World War II American and Australian troops stationed in New Guinea were warned to steer clear of the birds. They are capable of inflicting serious injuries on an adult human, even causing death, but these instances usually result from provocation by the human, or are due to the involvement of dogs; wounded or cornered birds are particularly dangerous. An unprovoked attack on a Papua New Guinea village has also been documented, but was the result of a bird previously raised in captivity being released into the wild. At least two people, a man and his mother, were confirmed to have died as a result of this attack. Females lay three to eight large, pale green-blue eggs in each clutch. These eggs measure about 90 by 140 mm (3½ by 5½ inches) — only ostrich and emu eggs are larger. The female does not care for the eggs or the chicks; the male incubates the eggs for two months, then cares for the brown-striped chicks for nine months. Southern and Northern Cassowaries are threatened species because of habitat loss; estimates of their current population range from 1500 to 10,000 individuals. About 40 are kept in captivity in Australia. Habitat loss has caused some cassowarries to venture out of the rainforest into human communities. This has caused conflict particularly with fruit growers. However, in some locations such as Mission Beach, Queensland, tourism involving the birds has been launched. DISCUSS. That question is indicative of an overly-anglophile test writer, and should have been taken out in the validaton process of the test, before it was fielded. Note: "Anglophile" does not equal "racist/biased." Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.

I'm willing to bet there are many inner city kids right here in Chicago who have never seen a star in the night sky, or an ox-bow lake or a mountain. So astronomy and geology questions could easily harbor bias. I'd wager that is because of crappy education. If parents wanted their kids to know these things, there are opportunities. I grew up in Chicago, and knew these things, because my parents encouraged education. Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.

Trying to understand Cricket always made my head hurt. Then the solution to this is to eliminate the word problems in favor of pure math probs. Science is also culturally neutral. A newton is a newton is a newton, black or white. Vocabulary is a tenuous issue, but which will increase the possibility of success--Modern Standard English or some ghetto dialect that is about as intelligible as a Xhosa "click" Language? You do the math. Agreed? Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.
