Sometimes it's fun to blaze an object, especially if it's in your backyard, you invite your friends and it's a truly epic jump. If someone else wants to jump it-they have to get creative. "Sometimes you eat the bar, and well-sometimes the bar eats you..."

Kurupee ff suit: Questions before order one
angryelf replied to konioa3d's topic in Gear and Rigging
I bought a Kurupee suit from Ed about 3 years ago-got it to fit medium. The suit has been great-but the material he was using then got really banged up in the tunnel and looks rough but still works great. (It's just fuzzed up all over). I ordered a camera jacket from him a few months ago-it was built with better materials, and put together very nicely. Only problem is that it was built with Teal Green instead of Kelly Green for the lightning design on the sleeves. (I ordered it to match my FF suit, which it didn't). I opted to buy Kelly Green fabric and sew new designs over his lightning bolts, as I wanted to jump the suit and didn't want to deal with sending it back to South America and dealing with all of that. (And matching was important to me...) I really like Kurupee suits. The lack of good contact, fact that they are made in another country is an issue-but I've been happy with what I've gotten from them. As a camera flyer I've have great success with the FF suit for most videos, throw the jacket on for light tandems and RW vid. The combo gives me great range. -Harry "Sometimes you eat the bar, and well-sometimes the bar eats you..." -

and If they've deployed a chest reserve, without a Pilot chute, by throwing it, "down & in the direction of the spin".. They are the " Kings of the Castle ". Done that... And I'm pretty young ;) "Sometimes you eat the bar, and well-sometimes the bar eats you..." -
3 jumps on my new bag from UPT with a Katana 135. 2 @ terminal, 1 hop and pop. All three jumps line stretch was fast (but not horrible), openings were on heading and smooth. I like it. I don't think the system is going to revolutionize skydiving: (I personally went to it b/c it's similar to a tail pocket on a BASE rig, intrigued me as a gear/mechanical geek and shortens time of line stretch (which I wanted with my Katana). A big problem with it is packers not being familiar with the system, which has already led to one reserve ride (according to the previous post...) Will there be a Lost Prarie Boogie in Montana this year and if so, when? Never been, heard good things and also heard that it was maybe not going to happen in 2010? Anybody in the know? -Harry "Sometimes you eat the bar, and well-sometimes the bar eats you..."

Note: this is copy/pasted from my reply to the other PD Pulse thread... I jumped a 170 (the Pulse) last weekend. Was in a demo rig borrowed from one friend who had it to do night jumps. Another guy (new jumper) had repacked it last so I jumped it to avoid my friend jumping a messed up rig at night. Glad I did... The canopy opened with one toggle completely unstowed (was packed that way). It hurt a bit-but the canopy opened suprisingly well considering. I was amazed at how clean the inflation was, and once the other toggle was released-how well pressurized and stable the parachute felt. The canopy flew well on rear risers, had decent range on the toggles. Front riser pressure was extremely high. I think the parachute is a bit "piggish", but very safe. TONS of flare on the bottom end. I personally wouldn't want one- but the opening characterisitics are very forgiving and the parachute would be great for the crowd it is being marketed to. If you want a slow, safe parachute to get you to the ground after an exciting freefall-the Pulse would be a great choice. I normally jump a steeply trimmed Jedei 150 at 1.5. I like a canopy to do more than the Pulse was designed to. Hope this helps.... Packing was easy and it fit very nicely in a Vector Micron with a Optimum 143. -Harry "Sometimes you eat the bar, and well-sometimes the bar eats you..."

Call Brian Germain. His number is on the old BigAir Sportz.com website. He will fix the canopy up for you, do your reline for a great price. he does great work for a fair price and since he designed the canopy he can straighten the issue out. He just built a custom HMA lineset for my Jedei 150 and I am extremely happy with the results. Brian will take his time with it as he is way busy, but the results are great! -Harry "Sometimes you eat the bar, and well-sometimes the bar eats you..."

Number of times you had to retake AFF jumps
angryelf replied to mik's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
never did AFF. Did some SL rounds and then some tunnel time and went off the ramp with an instructor who didn't take docks. Our radios weren't even on or in a position to be used to talk us down. Landings were kind of "self critiquing"... "Sometimes you eat the bar, and well-sometimes the bar eats you..." -

I'm pretty sure your rig is a retired PJ rig. I'm curious where you "picked it up"? The leg strap mod you refer to as a "freefly mod" is for doing water jumps. The strap allows you sit back with some security, disconnect the chest strap, belly band-which leaves only to pop the quick ejectors on the leg straps once your feet hit the water. The ring attached to it is for a one man life raft. The Paraflite info posted on why not to sport jump it seems pretty sound, cool piece of gear-would make a neat display... Those big canopies are not that fun to sport jump, imo... All your buddies will bitch about how much room you're taking up in the plane anyway "Sometimes you eat the bar, and well-sometimes the bar eats you..."

rsl/skyhook disconnect for camera jumps?
angryelf replied to angryelf's topic in Photography and Video
Where I work we are fortunate enough to have matching Vector III's w/ Skyhooks. When the rigs are used on camera jumps-the snap shackle is disconnected, disabling the Skyhook. The protocol for this was established earlier when Vector II's w/ standard RSL's were used. My question is this: Is there as high a probability of camera helmet entanglement (which is the reason for the disconnection) with the Skyhook system as there is with a standard RSL? Thoughts on this? Please provide logical reasoning for or against RSL use with cameras, I would like to avoid opinions based on preference... how to travel overseas with my gear????
angryelf replied to leski's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have flown with my rig to Europe and all over the states and have never had an issue with it. (I fly 40 to 50 times per year, for what that is worth). I have carried it on a few times, but have usually checked it inside a large duffel with jumpsuits and clothes wrapped around the outside to protect the pins and handles. Just let TSA or whoever is looking at your bags know that there is an "electronical AAD that opens your reserve parachute" and give a very brief explanation what it does. Leave out words like "charged cutter", etc. I've never used the card-but it is also an option. My experience has been that they have heard of the device and have never seen one-usually the security people are very excited and call their coworkers over to look at it. Cameras I carry on in a Lowe Alpine camera back pack, helmets I pad inside and out and stow in duffels as well. Hope this helps. "Sometimes you eat the bar, and well-sometimes the bar eats you..." -

Am trying to find a Sony PC style camera, a 1000 would be great-so far all I can locate is a PC-109. I am currently jumping a HCR28 which is pretty junky-it was a temp replacement for my old camera which I was just told is unrepairable. Does the 109 have a LANC port and is it suitable for tandem, outside student and fun jump video applications? Please let me know if anyone has any experience with it, Thanks! this isn't a Gath mod-but it should work on Yours just fine. I bought a skysystems chin cup, bonehead cutaway system and used them on an old Paramount. the Paramount had a slide lock release mechanism that was a complete death trap. I cut that off with a hacksaw and drilled two holes to mount the QR pin on one side and a simple bolt/washer/helmet/washer/nut plus thread lock. The only difference I can forsee is that You will prolly need to reinforce the plastic with something at the pivot points. My guess is that if You really ratchet the chincup down it will pull the tie ins thru the helmet material. Another thing to consider: I jumped a Gath with a Sony PC-109 mounted in a really clever bag that zipped shut. it was very secure, no snag hazards and was padded. Also very light. If I were to set up a Gath for a sidemount-this would be my choice. Not sure who made the pouch-might have been a rigger. Hope this helps! The other guys on here are giving good tips. If you are serious about getting the military to pay for you jumps-go to SOF. Army SF guys don't always get Mil Freefall (sometimes takes 8-10 yrs). If you go Navy-EOD and SEALS get MFF fairly soon after their selection. If I were you-I'd cross into the Blue, go Air Force PJ or CCT. You'll go to Airborne, then right to Army FF school. That all happens after You go through the selections, however. You'd get Dive quals too-if you're into that. Otherwise-budget and do your best to get through civilian AFF. Good luck!
