  1. NICE JOB GABO! too cool. I want in! I'll be heading your direction sometime in the next few months, drop me a pm about your upcoming event dates, and we'll go from there. Sounds just wonderful! Cheers! Wayne "If you are not a part of the Solution, you are a part of the Precipitate"
  2. " . . . more important will he recover from those injuries then?" THAT Faber, is the question everyone wants to know the answer to, but NO ONE will be able to answer. Because its just not known. As much as "we" know about neurobiology, and we know a lot, when you try to expand these small bits of solid, reductionist biology into an attempted understanding of higher level brain function, we just incorporate too many unknown variables to really "know" anything. We are left with only describing what we observe, and what we observe is HUGE VARIATION IN RESULTS. Maybe something like attempting to extrapolate from 2 dimensions of understanding to "real world infinitesimal dimensions". The bottom line is that we can look at two people, as similar as possible, with, to the best of our ability to understand and describe, the exact same brain injury, and their symptoms and recovery from said symptoms may be totally different ("results may vary"). so we just don't know. All of this is ESPECIALLY true in the frontal lobes. What I do know though, is that the doctors will do anything they can to avoid giving patients and family a potentially "false sense of hope", so they are by definition VERY CONSERVATIVE in their prognosis of recovery. Although I am a scientist, and certainly a reductionist, higher level brain function, damage, and recovery is clearly a case where the whole is much greater than the simple sum of the parts. A wonderful mystery we cannot yet come close to understanding let alone "solving". My point is, DO NOT EVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE INDIVIDUAL, THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING TO HEAL THYSELF. Attitude and effort are EVERYTHING for recovering from this type of injury, you can definitely do MUCH BETTER than the best doctor's prognosis, and NEVER give up. Although I don't know Matt well, I know enough to know that he is the type of individual to pull through this as best as can be expected, to exceed expectations, and that is exactly what I am hoping for and expect from him. Matt's recovery, his hard work, and effort will far surpass all of the doctors hopes and expectations. I do know that his doctors, psychiatrists, and therapists, DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DEALING WITH. Not to discount their expertise, or be disrespectful, but Matt is not normal, and he will blow everyone away with his recovery. Hang in there Matt, our thoughts are you, even though you don't know it yet! all my best, Wayne "If you are not a part of the Solution, you are a part of the Precipitate"
  3. Yes Tom, I will completely agree with you! My BEST thoughts and wishes towards healing are with Matt and his family, and have been for the last couple weeks. FWIW, I spent some time at craig hospital a few years back, for what appears to be a similar frontal lobe traumatic brain injury (and a couple little orthopedic issues too). I am sending something to Matt and his family, regarding my experiences and how they relate and may be of some possible moderate help/benefit/inspiration to them. Anyhow, for now I just want to let them know that there is much more support, silent and loud, for all of them, than appears here in this forum. Hang in there Matt, from what I've heard and seen, You'll be back very soon. It IS a marathon now, and far from trivial, but you will be back, and this will seem like a short sprint to you eventually. Heal fast, heal well, and you'll hear more from me soon. Antarctica BASE

FWIW, I know that at least one jump has been done in antartica, it was near the main research station there (the name of which I forget) by a base jumper who later died on a skydive into that continent. "If you are not a part of the Solution, you are a part of the Precipitate"
  8. Hey y'all! check out this part of the new patriot act (fascist over control act, + pork) that passed the house, but some senatiors are threatening to fillibuster. among many other disturbing things the pork in the act includes to specifically: • Create a new federal crime of photographing or videotaping bridges, garages, tracks, warehouses, or other facilities used by railroads, boats, or airplanes--if such recordings were made with the intent of doing harm. Anyone attacking anyone else near such facilities with a weapon--the list includes "a pocket knife with a blade of less than 2 1⁄2 inches in length and a box cutter"--can be punished with stiff prison terms and even the death penalty. If somehow a parachute, boots, or a hook knife were to be classified as a weapon, and if authorities wanted for some strange reason to pursue their potential authoritive options . . . this could be a real concern? thoughts??? here is the web address of the article and in it you can download a pdf of the entire act if you have heaps of time on your hands. http://news.com.com/Must+we+renew+the+Patriot+Act/2010-1028_3-5989887.html I apologize, but I rarely post, maybe someone could make a clicky and repet the very simple path to do this yourself?? thanks, wdc "If you are not a part of the Solution, you are a part of the Precipitate"
  9. Well Chris, Helpless . . . . what is helpless? I've been on both sides of that break bro, I happened to break my fibula (non-weight bearing) on base jump #1 (I probably should have had more than 10 skydives kiddies). Just like Tom describes, adrenaline and denial kept me walking and partying for 4 days before I "realized" what I had done. however, later in my illustrious carreer (and it continues to shine brightly in mine eyes) I had an accident from which I cannot pass a day withourt remembering for the constant pain. A number of days I will never forget, but which I don't entireley remember either . . . yet I can't attempt to forget . . . . sure I've made mistakes, who hasn't?, but I have no regrets, inspite of daily pain . . . y tu ? wdc "If you are not a part of the Solution, you are a part of the Precipitate"
  10. Very Nice, In Fact! Most of these kids have never heard of Mr. Ryde, don't know all the close calls and fiasco's he's been "entangled" in, nor his classic place in our history. Keep up the subtle (poke, wink, nod) education Nick! DT "If you are not a part of the Solution, you are a part of the Precipitate"

  13. I do not know the author, but the way I heard the above misquoted quote was as the following: " Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intentions of arriving in a well preserved and attractive body, but RATHER to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other . . . body thoroughly used up, totally worn-out and screaming . . . 'Wooohoooo! What a ride!!!' " tryin' to live up to it . . . wdc "If you are not a part of the Solution, you are a part of the Precipitate"
