for a minute there i thought we were going to open up that whole weathervaning controversy that began to take hold back in the 70's. seems national's 26 bias constructed lo po reserves, made by security (with a 4 line release) ,were SO assymetrical that lots of them had built in turns . national came out with a statement about the weathervaning effect to explain why there product was turning all by itself.

spanwise construction is more labor intensive as the whole top or bottom has to be sewn together BEFORE any ribs attach. only way it is less labor intensive (hence cheaper)is iff you space the ribs out to save on the number of seams .BUT performance suffers due do the rather large inlet opening at the fron of each cell. abot the only true advantage is that its harder to build a canopy witha built in turn using spanwise construction.

what type of pilotchute handle do you have?
highspeeddirt replied to highspeeddirt's topic in Gear and Rigging
i was only interested in what type of handles are in use. pull out , throw out or ripcord would be a different question. -

I had an 88 astro that did something similar. turns out the 2 inch piece of rubber hose connecting the electric fuel pumpto the outlet in the fuel tank had deteriorated into mush andlittle particles of it were clogging the fuel pump strainer.

Why do smoke jumpers still use rounds ?
highspeeddirt replied to rideclimbfall's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
besides, what altitude do they jump from?low i would guess.so if one had a malfunction on a square, you would have to cutaway, rite?the lower exit altitude probably plays a BIG factor . -

got any pictures of Ted Strong"s "Wing Ding" canopy?
-
Sir Timothy and The Royals(mansfield ohio) were great till some scumbag producers from NYC got their hooks into them.
-
actually what caused the problem with the tricon was its low profile. when a round canopy opens , it will "pancake'' or flatten out as the air crashing into the low pressure area above the canopy suddenly meets the open parachute. tri cons because of their low profile were more prone to inverting at this stage of opening than other canopies (regular conicals are more resistant because they have a higher profile).
-
NOT a KXX. it is a PIONEER TRI CONICAL,which preceeded the kxx by a good 10-15 years. By the way, the seller is Dick Paliello who used to own Continental Air sports in Xenia ohio.

its a Para Sled by Jalbert Aerology Labs.that pic was lifted from poynters manual.as to why it failed, Jalbert did not have a viable reefing system . Snyder had patented his pilot chute controlled reefing(PCR) and at the time he and Jalbert were feuding(lawsuits and what not)over Snyders direct line attach patents(no flares on the bottom surface on snyder canopies). Ray Kirst, who was one of snyd's test jumpers did a hop n pop on one , had a pilotchute hesitation and tried to cut it away because the opening was gonna be BRUTAL even with that short amount of freefall

Getting back your main after a cutaway?
highspeeddirt replied to Blassiter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
whats wrong with enlisting the help of the kids at the drop zone?offer a reward for finding your stuff and returning it.when i was growing up at the local dz thats what we did. i used to retreive sleeves and pilot chutes, wind drift indicators (used to get 25 cents each)as well as cutaway mains, kicker plates and ripcords.i even found a watch once while i was out looking for somebody's ripcords(it was still running). -
