God/1st Law of Thermo, Part I, Language
StreetScooby replied to StreetScooby's topic in Speakers Corner
Introduction ============ This thread is a continuation of the following thread: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2396715;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread Summary ======= I'm looking for people to comment on their understanding of language, and in general, effective communication via written word. Discussion ========== This discussion will take place in the English language. How does language develop? Through common experience amongst people, who then "quantify" that experience via language. Effectively introducing new words into a language is very difficult, because common experience is required in order for the words to have any meaning. Conclusion ========== This theme will always be present in this discussion. It will prove to be a hurdle that we need to overcome to reach the conclusions already discussed. I'd like everyone involved in the discussion to keep this in mind. We will be introducing new words into the language. We are all engines of karma -

Interesting new phrase. I like it. I think the overall assessment, while consistent, is a bit depressing. Why don't you join my "God and the 1st Law Of Thermo" discussion, as it evolves? Could be fun We are all engines of karma

Yes, that's what I meant. Thanks for catching my finger-burp. We are all engines of karma

Get a water squirter now. Any time the cat is doing something it shouldn't, squirt it with water. Also, be sure and give it lots of places to scratch (scratching board, rope tied around a post, etc.). They'll learn quickly not to scratch the furniture. The dog and cat will eventually work something out. No one likes to fight all the time. We are all engines of karma

Having seen many of your posts, I fully expect some serious contribution from you I'm looking forward to it. We are all engines of karma -
The 2nd law of thermo states that the entropy of the UNIVERSE is always constant or increasing. It's ok to have localized decreases in entropy. We are all engines of karma

Ok, so it sounds like there reasonable interest in pursuing this as a topic for disucssion. I'll spend some time and put together the next piece on this. Thanks, guys. We are all engines of karma -
God and the First Law Of Thermodynamics

You've quoted me out of context. The full statement was: If it's happening, it's natural. Unnatural things do not happen. We are all engines of karma -

Agreed. In general, applied mathematicians use a control volume, rather than a pipe. A control volume is an arbitrary sphere in space. We are all engines of karma -
God and the First Law Of Thermodynamics

Creationists tend to present arguments that reflect their understanding of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Creationists' understanding of the 2nd law tends to be limited, in my observations. In technical terms, the 2nd law says - The entropy of the universe stays constant, or increases, for every change that happens. Basically, the 2nd law can be viewed as follows: If it's happening, it's natural. Unnatural things do not happen. This discussion will focus on the 1st law, not the 2nd. We are all engines of karma -
God and the First Law Of Thermodynamics

I'm a chemical engineer by training. The thermo I was taught deals with "open" systems. It's basically pretty simple, and can be referred to as the "guzinta" law. What goes into a pipe does one of two things: 1) It stays in the pipe 2) It comes out the other end Goes into to... (guzinta) So, we'll definitely be discussing "thermodynamically open" systems. God and the First Law Of Thermodynamics

I've been debating this for a long time with myself, whether to put this to public discussion in this forum. Many years ago, I spent a couple years of my life developing a "life-understanding" that I call God and the First Law Of Thermodynamics The conclusions that I reached turned out to be pretty simple: 1) God is a verb. It's a great flow that we are all part of, whether you want to be or not. 2) Stay in your inner tube. Be happy, don't worry. Your thoughts are real. 3) Watch out for the big rocks. 4) Keep the cooler close at all times. Is there any interest in developing this topic in a civilized manner? It'll end up consisting of several distinct parts before the above conclusions are reached. We are all engines of karma -
Agreed. I have met alot of people in my life who are worthy of God's favor. We are all engines of karma

Very true, and well put. We are all engines of karma

I believe John is addressing a general attitude in the UK, even at high police levels as evidenced by this article, in that guns are perceived as being bad. John, myself, and all NRA members are are just the opposite with regards to that perception. Guns are a fundamental right to all Americans. Use it or lose it. We are all engines of karma

Never underestimate how mean spirited Christians can be. I've seen it too many times. They can be the least forgiving people. We are all engines of karma

Just my .02 Having been raised in a fundamentalist Christian church in the deep south, and having some understanding of statistics and bell curves, here's my observation: Growing up, my goal was to be a preacher. I knew alot of people that weren't the sharpest tacks in the box with regards to formal IQ. In college, and subsequently, I knew alot of people who were the sharpest tacks in the box with regards to formal IQ. I graduated summa cum laude in chemical engineering from LSU, a school that takes its chemical engineering very seriously, and from which alot of Exxon senior managers are alumni. My take on this thread is, there are multiple curves in practice here. 1) General IQ curve 2) "Religousity" curve, for the lack of a better phrase. Applying the "Religousity" curve to the lower part of the General IQ curve would show that alot of people believe in one of the formal religions. Applying the "Religousity" curve to the higher part of the General IQ curve would show that alot of people don't believe in of the formal religions. I include myself in the latter group. I consider myself to be a very spiritual person, and that God is beyond belief. God is. It's the interpretation of God that's the primary difference between the two groups. After many years of searching and study, it finally dawned on me personally that God is best viewed as a verb (as in flow), not a noun. Things started making much more sense to me after that realization. We are all engines of karma

Check out their completed programs summary: http://www.darpa.mil/dso/trans/transit.htm Specifically, Soldier Self Care http://www.darpa.mil/dso/trans/ssc.htm Very interesting new pain development: Novel Pain Therapeutics—A monoclonal antibody that inhibits Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) was found to treat pain at the site of injury while maintaining alertness and protective pain sensations. Researchers confirmed that subcutaneous administration of the compound was as effective as morphine, and more effective than conventional therapies in experimental models. A single dose of the compound reduced nociceptive response for more than three weeks, without adverse effects on cognition, motor coordination, or respiratory drive. Wow. We are all engines of karma

Yes, it does seem there has been a significant erosion between the separation of church and state lately. That bothers me. Looking forward to seeing what happens when W is gone. We are all engines of karma -

We are in a culture clash on this planet that's not going to stop until there is a clear winner. Even though it's a small minority of Muslims who can't live with us, it's still a culture clash since the rest of the Muslims won't turn the bad guys out, for whatever reason. We really need to start taking out the money. We're not doing that. Thus, my conclusion is, my country does not accept we're in a culture clash. This is not going to stop anytime soon, unless we make the decision to be the clear winner, whatever that takes. We are all engines of karma
