  1. Or maybe the bible is based on a system of ethics that transcends religion? You'll find The Golden Rule (treat others as you would want to be treated) articulated in one form or another in almost every religion. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  2. And Man created God in his own image.... - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  3. Touche! I was wondering when someone was going to throw it back at me. Nope. Wouldn't change because I am driven by a code of personal ethics & common decency. My ethics wouldn't change if I knew there was a deity, so accordingly, I would not change how I lead my life. As I like to say, I (try to) do the right thing for the right thing's sake, no other reason. Of course that begs the question of what would the nature of the deity be? Here's an interesting twist. What if the deity required you to behave in a manner which contradicted with your personal ethics, but would result in eternal punishment if you disobeyed the deity? Would you stay faithful to your ethics, or violate your ethics in order to appease the deity (and avoid damnation)? - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  4. No. An agnostic is undecided on the existence of a deity (or deities). That is, we neither affirm nor deny it because we don't know. "Agnostic" comes from the Latin "A", which means "no" or "not" and "Gnosis", which means "to know". So literally, we don't know. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  5. I think that would still be acceptable. Better than OOOOoooohhhhhhhhhhhh shitidontknowwhatcomesnextbecausethereisnogod!!!!!!!!!! - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  6. Actually, Bill really got to the crux of the question which is if one were certain that there would be no (eternal or temporary) punishment for one's actions, would that change the way one leads his or her life? My answer is still "no". - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  7. Curse you polytheists! Ain't no deity. None. Zero. Zilch. Zip. Nada. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  8. It's a hypothetical. So part of the hypothetical is that you must accept the proven fact that God does not exist. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  9. I guess I should add the follow-up. If you answer "yes", how would you change it and why? I'd also be interesting in hearing from those who have faith and answered "no". Why would you not change? - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  10. This is a question I frequently pose to people. The responses I get back are interesting. Since I'm agnostic, my answer is obviously "no". - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  11. That would be what some call "Strong Agnosticism". I'm what people would call a Weak Agnostic. I personally don't know one way or another whether God (or Gods) exists. However, I do not rule out the possibility that the existence of God has been revealed or otherwise proven to others. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  12. Exactly. Which is why I consider atheism every bit as much of a "faith" as theism. In fact. it much more difficult to prove a negative than a positive. Therefore, those who say "God does not exist" actually are saying "I have faith that God does not exist". - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

  14. Well, actually the world is spheroid-shaped (not round, which is 2-dimensional). Sorry, that's the geek in me speaking. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
  15. If that's the case, then the Catholic Church wouldn't have seen the need to pesecute those who theorized that the world was round. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

  21. I always found this explanation of Jesus' "lost years" to be intriguing. Supposedly there are references to "Issa" in Indian writings. The only thing I'm not sure of is how efficient travel would have been between Israel and India/Tibet, etc during that time. I'd love to research this. Christian mystics (as well as the Sufis & Kabbalists) are very "Eastern" in their thinking and practice. The Gnostic/Eastern connection makes for very good reading (like Thomas Merton & Thich Nhat Hanh's writings). - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
