  1. Abort! Abort! Don't do it man. I spent 4 years in the profession only to realize I hated it. I enjoyed the research, but hated the mind games that go on in litigation. Plus, I don't know what the job market is like now for attorneys, but it sucked back in '91. Now I write software. No bickering. Better job opportunites (even these days) and pretty darn good pay. ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie
  2. I know this comes up over and over again, but I'll bring it up again because I am a true believer. If you can swing it, try to get some time in a wind tunnel. It made my sudent material a snap. Ther are tunnels in Pigeon Forge, TN, Orlando, FL and Las Vegas. ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie
  3. Holy crow! Where's your DZ? When I was taught to pack, our DZ's packers showed me several ways to check including the toss and "look inside" methods. ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie

  7. I had a really cool dream just the other night. Basically I'm making a trip.... under canopy. I know the place is a long way off, but I just keep going and going over this road. The road would dip down & I'd just fly straight and meet up at the other side. At one point I say, OK let's see if I can swoop down one of these dips. So I just follow the road down and then go back up the other side holding it about 10 feet off the ground the whole time. Cars would go under me and I'd just fly along. Felt like I could go forever. ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie
  8. Man, this is me to a "T". I only need a couple of jumps and on the ride back home I start feeling The Crash coming on. This past Sunday I came back from the DZ, went out to eat with some friends and had to lay down on their couch at like 9:00 just to rest. Every time I jump I'm completely wiped out about an hour later. ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie
  9. I'm usually so jacked up all day that I don't get all that hungry. My DZ "meal" is usually a choclate chip cookie. Need that glucose kick to keep me going. ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie
  10. Well when I'm packing I check it several times several ways. I'll cock it and then toss it a couple of times during the pack job. For me the green in the window is for double-checking after everything's packed. If you don't have any green line, you have no way of checking after the pack job whether thing thing is cocked or not. Thus the marker idea. As far as the kill line twisting. Yeah, you'd probably have to mark all the way around the thing to make sure. ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie
  11. If you don't have the green line, couldn't you cock it and then use a green permanent marker to color in that section of line in the window? Just coo-rious. ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie
  12. Sorry do long in getting back to you on this. Yeah, Fall would be better all around. I'm thinking we'll generate more interest as the weather gets crappier up north. Late October would be a good time. It's fall-ish, not too close to any major holidays (i.e. Thanksgiving), so maybe the rates will be good and people's schedules will be free. ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie

  14. That could make for an interesting exchange... INTERVIEWER: "So what do you do in yourspare time?" ZELDA: "I like gardening, music, dancing and hurling myself out of airplanes at 14000 feet." INTERVIEWER: "Those are nice hobbies. Uh. Could you run that last one by me again?" ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie

    Quincy?

Do they do any skydiving demos at the EAA? It'd be cool to drop out of the bottom of a B-17. ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie

  18. Tend to agree on the anonymity point. But freaksis also doesn't know how to use a Shift key whereas this person does. Also note the copious use of smileys, capitalization and exclamation points. If one reviews the writings of freaksis, one finds that this style does not fit her posting pattern. It does, however, fit.... Carries! ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie
  19. It has to be someone who is seeing another skydiver since they were hanging out at the DZ after hours. It could be a guy posting this, but the writing style doesn't fit. Pammi's out. That leaves.... Carrie! ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie
  20. One thing I'd add tha made me opt out on the Sabre is that I'm pretty much tired of getting pounded by the thing. It seems to be really fussy about the pack job. Most of the time ouur packers do a good job on it, but every now & then I get stung. I've heard you don't even have to roll a Spectres nose. Still opens nice and soft (just get ready for 600-800 foot openings). ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie
  21. I'm looking at an Odyssey with a Spectre 150 as my main (I'm about 190 out the door). I did a lot of asking around and it pretty much came down to a Spectre or Safire. I talked to a few Spectre owners and it seemed to have most of the qualities I was looking for: consistent, soft (but slow) openings, lots of flare power, but slightly elliptical so you can have a little fun with it as well. One of our guys at the DZ has a Spectre and was on a load that was *really* long. He was one of the few who made it back. Said he just grabbed onto the rear risers and did almost a flat glide all the way back. Had 1000 feet to burn when he hit the DZ. Plus, when I've mentioned to everyone that I was planning on a Spectre, they seemed to all think that was a really good choice. Just my $0.02 ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie

That's right, I forgot you were still early AFF. Definitely do only what your instructors recommend. You'll have a lot of people giving you advice. While some of it may be OK for experienced skydivers, they may not be good ideas for beginners. As far as braked approaches go, I had to learn them in AFP. Talk it over with your instructors. They may want you to hold off on them until later, but they may also give you the go-ahead to try it to see if it helps. But definitely do whatever they recommend. My instructors were always really good about offering suggestions of things to try if I was having a problem with something. I'll just offer this as something to think about. One of the things I was told early on was to fly the canopy, don't let it fly you. That means many things to many people, but I think it definitely means knowing how the canopy responds through the entire control range and then finding what works best for you (and the given conditions). ------------ Blue Skies! One of the guys atthe DZ was giving me crap because he thought I flared too high. I stood up the landing, sheesh, what more can you ask for? Plus I wasn't flaring high. I was coming in in brakes since I've been jumping a hotter canopy lately. If you're having trouble landing you may want to give it a try. I found that I ususally biff it because I'm coing in too fast to time the final flare right. So for me the logical solution is to slow yourself down. Try coming in at about 1/4 brakes (rather than full up). That will slow you down enough to guage when to do the final flare easier. At least it does for me. ------------ Blue Skies! Zennie
